“Good value for money”
Reviewed 24 September 2011

We have just return from a long week-end from the Beresford Hotel. The hotel is in a great location overlooking Tolcarne beach.
The staff were friendly and the food was excellent. The hotel itself is rather dated and could do with a good maintenance man to see to the squeaking doors, leaking taps, loose toilet seats etc. etc. and a bit of T.L.C. But saying that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
To make your trip more enjoyable its always worth paying a little extra for a sea view room.

Room Tip: Always ask for a sea view room

We were booked for 7 nights on a self-drfive, all inclusive holiday. On arrival our initial thoughts were not good, the room we were allocated had a hole in a wall, wallpaper hanging off the wall and ceiling and the toilet cistern looked terrible although closer inspection showed that this was due to the original colour having been partly scrubbed off. We requested another room but could not get one until the next day. The second room was better but still was very tired.

The hotel was in a good location, only a short walk from all the amenities of Newquay and just across the road from a nice beach (at bottom of cliff accessed by stairs or road).

There is no doubt that the best thing about the Beresford is the quality of its staff. Dining room seating was allocated and our waitress was Rima, a lovely friendly girl who efficiently looked after our every need. She was a star. Also worth special mention was the chef who, due to my wife being coeliac met with her every morning to discuss and sort out her evening meal. Nothing was too much bother and she was very well catered for with gluten free meals. Moving on the bar staff, who were always kept busy served everyone with a smile and friendly chatter.

The hotel offered evening entertainment and considering this was all part of the holiday package, I must say was very good with different entertainment each night.

Whilst my overall rating is only a 3 this is down purely to the tiredness of the hotel which clearly needs investment to upgrade the rooms. I fully take the point of other contributors that I received value for money but that should not mean that the Bay Hotel Group let the local management and staff down by failing to invest in the fabric of the building.

my husband and i recently stayed at the beresford hotel.we were on an all inclusive 8 day break with shearings.the hotel has a great position just over the road from tolcarne beach and within easy walking distance of the town centre.the hotel was clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. the food was excellant and as we were on an all inclusive package the alcohol was all free between 730 and 1030.the only downside was the entertainment which was mediocre at best but there were some fairly nice pubs within easy walking distance if you wanted a change of scenery. we would have no hesitation in staying at this hotel again in the future!!!

We have just returned from a 7 night self drive all inclusive holiday at the Beresford and enjoyed a lovely week with good weather.
Positives: Large room with 2 large windows, comfortable beds, co-ordinated decor, friendly staff, good quick service, good food for the price, fantastic drinks inclusive deal.
Negatives: Our bathroom needed a little TLC and the power in the shower was very poor. No hot water one morning but it was restored by evening. The lifts are unbelievably tiny (this didn't bother me as I am claustrophobic and wouldn't have used the lifts anyway) and one broke down for a while, but was repaired quickly.
General: Most guests are elderly as the hotel specialises in coach holidays so don't go expecting a lively, young atmosphere. Several guests were moaning about the food although we had no complaints. I think some people just like to have something to moan about. If you want 5 star food, go somewhere else and pay 5 star prices. The meals are well cooked, varied and served hot. The price we paid worked out at £38 per person per day for bed, breakfast, evening meal, entertainment, and all drinks between 7.30 and 10.30 each evening, including beer, lager and spirits as shown on a list in Reception. This included well known beers and lagers and, while the spirits were brands I had never heard of, they were fine and, if you want famous brands, they are only 50p per drink extra.
Our only slight niggle was that we had requested a room on a low floor (see above comment about lifts!) and we were given one on the 3rd floor. We did ask at reception and were told there were no lower ones available but they would try to get us one later in the week. We never heard any more about it so the stairs did become a bit of a bind.
All in all, this was a great value holiday and we would definitely visit a Shearings hotel again in the future.

loved it, clean room every day, great food well done chefs never heard a complaint. and there were 3 coaches full of people plus others staying. one thing you could warn of is the steep slopes and steps back up from the beaches.
Thank you once again may see you next year.
