Owner description: Inspiring sea safari sailing trips aboard a ten metre catamaran, with the winners of the 2013 Responsible World Whale Watch Awards . A voyage on "Shearwater II" gives you the best opportunity to find the marine wildlife of south west Cornwall, including seals, porpoises, seabirds, dolphins, basking sharks and whales. All trips are fully guided with experienced and entertaining guides, who are trained educators. Shearwater II takes just 12 passengers and 2 crew, so you get a great view of the wildlife and the views without having to peer over other people. Please call or email to enquire. Fully licenced and insured NB please remember that sightings of specific species cannot be guaranteed and that we advertise this fact widely. Therefore the most useful and accurate reviews of our company rate us on the factors we can directly control e.g. customer service, politeness, ease of booking, quality of welcome and so on, rather than whether the reviewer saw the exact species they wanted. Marine Discovery is shut between November and March due to weather constraints and winter maintenance. If in doubt, call to check.

Fabulous 3 hour trip, we got to see harbour porpoises which was fantastic. We also saw lots of different sea birds as well.

The skipper was brilliant and had lots of knowledge of the area which really made the experiance.

We were very impressed at how well they were able to find the porpoises as they apparently don't often come close to the boat.

As with all true wildlife experiences you are at mercy of the animals in their natural habitat. Only the stunning Cornish coastline and natural beauty of the sea are guaranteed. On the trip we took we were fortunate enough to see seals, basking sharks, porpoises, sunfish and a variety of seabirds and having been on a number of similiar experiences in many parts of the world I feel this is really is one of the best. One of the variables you can control is who you go with. Hannah and Duncan are excellent hosts, the passion and euthuaism they bring is infectious and I cannot rate them highly enough. Their catamaran is ideal for purpose and it is an experience myself and my marine loving six year old will never forget.

I have been on many many boat trips in different countries including the Caribbean but this was the best one ever! On our trip today we saw lots of ocean sunfish, basking shark, seals, gannets,Manx shearwaters, jellyfish and a big pod of dolphins that decided to follow and play alongside us for quite sometime, all of which we didn't expect to see, being that they are wild animals and nothing is guaranteed.
But all that aside,I would still give this trip a 5 out of 5 due to the sheer enjoyment of being on such a fantastic comfortable boat with Hannah and Duncan who made us feel welcomed and relaxed from the minute we met them. This couple are clealy educated and knowledgable in marine life and go that extra mile to make this trip about your enjoyment.
Even though they have seen all these things thousands of times, they still showed an enthusiasm and excitement that was like it was their first time truly wonderful.

what an excellent way to spend 3 hours! this was our 3rd trip in the last few years, our reason for returning to penzance was to go on their trips! on this trip we watched seals hurling themselves out on to st clements island, gannets diving, harbour porpoise swimming past the boat, watched a basking shark feeding, saw blue jelly fish, many ocean sunfish and a very playful pod of common dolphins who swam along with the boat for a good half hour!

we loved the boat, very eco friendly and a very relaxing way to travel and to spot the wildlife, much better than the old RIB!

hannah and duncan are excellent guides, so knowledgable about all the wildlife and the area, the trip wouldnt be half as good if they didnt know what they were talking about!

we enjoyed this trip so much, we have booked to go back on tuesday!!

thanks for a wonderful afternoon

We took a trip but the marine life didn't come up to play. The sailing experience was OK but we're a family of petrol heads so in absence of the marine animals or an exciting swell, the sailing isn't our thing. My 12yr old fell asleep for an hour.
Very knowledgeable crew.

Thanks for writing your review, John, and I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy your trip as much as the previous reviewers. To address your points:

Regarding the wildlife - yes it's true that this is described as a sea safari, however as with all wildlife experiences the world over we can't guarantee that every trip will see the same animals, much as we'd like to! It's a pity you had a quiet trip, as actually we have been enjoying a very good run of sightings recently, with lots of common dolphins, sunfish, seals and regular basking sharks seen. When someone books in advance, part of the information I send does stress the impossibility of guaranteeing sightings, as does the website and the leaflets .We also update our website every day that we go out on the water, the aim being to give a 100% accurate and honest portrayal of the sightings we have in this part of the world. I take your comments on board however and will try to find a way of making this even clearer to prospective customers, who perhaps don't have access to the website or have a leaflet.

As for the sailing catamaran, I'm sorry it wasn't as much to your taste as a motor boat. The reason we switched from using the RIB to the sailing cat was mainly for the sake of the wildlife, which is what we're out there to find. Sailing is a quieter and less obtrusive way of viewing marine animals, and we have found in the two years since we have been using the sailing cat rather than the RIB that our sightings rate has shot up, added to which we are using far less fuel. We always felt like frauds taking people out to look for these precious animals by using a craft which burns so much fuel, as all RIBs do. It was a massive decision to make, and we have asked repeat customers ever since which they preferred. With the exception of yourselves they have said that they actually preferred the sailing experience, but as is completely understandable, there will be those with different tastes who prefer the speed above anything else.

Thanks for the positive comment on the crew's knowledge - we have spent many thousands of hours out there refining this so as to give passengers the most informative and educational experience we can.

We would be glad to welcome you back to Marine Discovery if you ever wanted to give it another try.
