Owner description: Inspiring sea safari sailing trips aboard a ten metre catamaran, with the winners of the 2013 Responsible World Whale Watch Awards . A voyage on "Shearwater II" gives you the best opportunity to find the marine wildlife of south west Cornwall, including seals, porpoises, seabirds, dolphins, basking sharks and whales. All trips are fully guided with experienced and entertaining guides, who are trained educators. Shearwater II takes just 12 passengers and 2 crew, so you get a great view of the wildlife and the views without having to peer over other people. Please call or email to enquire. Fully licenced and insured NB please remember that sightings of specific species cannot be guaranteed and that we advertise this fact widely. Therefore the most useful and accurate reviews of our company rate us on the factors we can directly control e.g. customer service, politeness, ease of booking, quality of welcome and so on, rather than whether the reviewer saw the exact species they wanted. Marine Discovery is shut between November and March due to weather constraints and winter maintenance. If in doubt, call to check.

A very knowledgeable couple run these catamaran trips. We were less lucky with the number of species spotted this time, but a wonderful relaxing boat trip!

We are regular summer visitors to Cornwall, and this time we decided book a 90 minute ride on a catamaran in advance. This 90 minutes was probably the best part of our week long camping trip. If we hadn't seen any wildlife from the boat (and there are no guarantees that you will), it would still have been great. We were free to go pretty much anywhere we liked so we sat on the big net at the front with the water rushing underneath. My six year old daughter, and the other kids on the boat, loved the splashing as we bounded along at what seemed like high speed (I was told it was only about 10 mph). The skipper was an Oceanographer, so it was nice to have someone who knew what he was talking about, and what to look out for. We saw a lot of very large barrel jellyfish, various sea birds and a seal - not to mention a new perspective on the coastline. The skipper then spotted some gannets dive bombing the water, a spectacular sigh in itself. He said this was a possible sign of dolphins feeding - and then the fun really started. Within seconds we were surrounded by common dolphins (there is nothing common about them). There seemed to be dozens of them. They were riding the bow wave and darting all around us with number of baby dolphins too. It was hard to know who was watching who. Brilliant - I think this will become a regular part of visits to Cornwall in future.

Me, my missus and son took the 3 hour afternoon trip last week and we all had an amazing experience.
Even if you do not see any of the larger "star" marine species (dolphins, etc), the trip is still brilliant - travelling around the coast in the catamaran was just wonderful, The boat has 2 small, engines and sails. We returned to port via open sea purely under sail - this was just ace.
As per the other reviews, Hannah and Duncan are brill - their knowledge is huge and you can sense their real enjoyment and enthusiasm in their work.
Unfortunately, on our trip, we saw no dolphins, porpoises, minke whales or seals but we did see a..........drum roll...........4M LONG BASKING SHARK (literally in front of the Minack Theatre)!!!
It will be a real life memory for us all - as the engines where turned off, the shark swam right up the the boat and you could see it really clearly - the open mouth, gills, fin, etc (see photos). It truly was an amazing experience. To see such a large animal in the wild was a real privilege.
So, I cannot recommend this trip enough - if you have half a day to spare in Cornwall, then you will not go wrong here. Thanks so much Hannah and Duncan.

Not a huge fan of boat trips to say the least but thought that I would be able to recline in the sun while others scanned the horizon for fins. What do I know? Had to eat my words when skipper Duncan found a pod of juvenile dolphins and encouraged them to come over and join us. We spent half an hour in a convoy with these amazing creatures cavorting around the boat. Unforgettable.

Duncan is not just a boatman, he is also a fully-fledged marine biologist which is handy for all those questions. He is an outstanding enthusiast - as evidenced by the fact that he basically just doubled the length of the trip, at no extra cost, for our benefit. Also very good with small kids.

Everyone very efficient and customer service outstanding. Even got me my phone back.,..(sorry, Duncan and Hannah).

Can't speak too highly of the whole shebang.

Received this trip s a Christmas present. Unfortunately the weather was against us with intermittent heavy drizzle & sea mist. Although we only saw 2 seals, a single jellyfish & sea birds we still had a lovely trip on the catamaran, Hannah & Duncan were very knowledgable & made us feel welcome. We spent nearly 3 hours in search of dolphins etc but is was not meant to be, that's wildlife for you, no guarantees. Overall we really enjoyed our trip, would definitely recommend & would love to do it all over again.
