“Another great visit to Penlee House.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 April 2014

Another visit to one of our favourite places. Penlee House Gallery is blessed with some of the best paintings of the Newlyn School Artists. Have enjoyed them on many a visit over the years, and always find some we haven't seen before. The highlights this time were the originals of Penzance Station and the Market Place both by Stanhope Forbes, and on loan to the Gallery until June. Enjoyed so much that we are going again today. Will also have lunch in the lovely Orangery Cafe, where they serve a delightful range of light meals and delicious cakes. A small shop stocks books, greeting cards and also prints of the paintings. No visit to Penzance would be complete for us without a visit here. Do be aware that like all galleries there are times when exhibitions are being re- hung. That said, the cafe is always available, as are the Newlyn School paintings owned by Penlee House. Do treat yourself to a visit here when in Penzance, reasonable price for admission, free on Saturdays and donations are always welcomed.

“Edward Bouverie Hoyton 1900 - 1988: Master Etcher”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 March 2014

This artists work is observation and representation at it's zenith. As Hoyton wrote he did some abstract works but it was too easy.
The Penlee has much else to see including the original " Cornish Pirate" on loan from Penzance and Newlyn RUFC.
There is also a large oil painting depicting the action of 4th January 1867 in which Private Samuel Hodge, 4th West India Regiment was awarded the VC for his gallant conduct at the siege and capture of Tubabecolong, Gambia River. My opinion is that Desanges work does not show Hodge in the best way.
