We were just in time to see the Stanhope Forbes exhibition. The Cornish light and the sea were beautifully reproduced. The little museum is worth a visit too. A good shop attached to the gallery and museum is full of unusual items and well-worth a browse.

My husband and I visited the lovely Penlee House while the Stanhope Forbes exhibition was on. What a fantastic place, what a fantastic exhibition. Well worth a visit and the entrance fee. We had been to see the Toulouse Lautrec exhibition in Albi earlier in the year and as far as we were concerned the Stanhope Forbes paintings could knock his into a cocked hat! Purely a personal view of course.....

The recent Stanhope Forbes exhibition is this gallery at its best. There is a real buzz about the rooms. The permanent display is equally interesting with the amazing history of West Cornwall. The gallery cafe is great with a really pleasant outdoor seating area as well.

Amazing paintings by Stanhope Forbes sorry the exhibition finishing soon would like to go back again and again.
The permanent paintings in the Museum are incredible but it was great you see so many magnificent Stanhope Forbes altogether.

We visited on a wet morning in August and particularly wanted to see the Stanhope Forbes exhibition. We were not disappointed. Galleries in bigger places with more resources should see is exhibition and book it. This is the way to do it. With around 70 paintings showing different aspects of his style and including some stunning paintings, it was the best exhibition of a single artist's work I have seen. The gallery is a manageable size, so not exhausting like the National Gallery etc. It has a cafe and is set in pretty gardens. We had a coffee which was OK. The food looked nice though we didn't eat there. There is also a small museum focusing on local history which was well curated. I particularly liked the Crysede fabrics and designs which I had never heard of ( there are a few more in the St Ives museum). The exhibition ends at the end of September so catch it if you can.
