Had a great five night stat there, rooms were immaculate, staff very friendly, the book in the room on the hotel and the area was brilliant. The breakfast selection and food service was great. Good location 2 minutes from the front or the shops in the other direction.

Check in was friendly and efficient. We stayed on a friday night in the top room, with walls painted with the view of the pub, as seen out of the window. Double glazed so you could not really hear pub noise. You can walk to bars, resturants, shops, etc. The bed was really comfortable with feather pillows & duvet. Breakfast was tasty. Full of modern art - quite different to the normal guest houses!

So when we decided to go to Cornwall we wanted to spend all four nights here but because they were full for two of the nights we stayed in Newquay which is just about 45-50 mins away. I fell in love first with this little town and then when we got into our rooms, aww, so unique. In fact when we got to our rooms we all looked at each other with the same thought really..that we had gotten to spend the entire four days here.

This little hotel with its big red door, had a rustic but warming feel to it. I felt so at home there. The staff is just wonderful, everyone we came in contact with was just a joy to speak with. Genuine and warm smiles met you all the time. You could tell that they were so sincere in their eagerness to assist you in whatever you wanted and they could help with. The rooms are a bit small but we still fit in, so cozy. It was just beautiful. My boys went haywire when they realized that they had chalk board doors they could write on..(had to warn them that they were limited to only closet doors and bedroom door), but they still had a great time with it.

Breakfast is included in the rate. There are about 5-7 breakfast choices the days we were there. Needless to say we were not disappointed with breakfast. We enjoyed it, they had homemade yogurts and granola cereal to sprinkle on top if you wish. Fresh fruits, various cereals and delicious hot mad to order meals. We all chose different meals each day were were there and we were not disappointed once.

The two rooms in which we stay were completely different, I am guessing each and every room is. We had a small fridge and microwave in one of the rooms. Our bed was set atop some metal looking base while the other was just a regular one. The "night tables" were on wheels, had an old fashion radio. The previous guests and or probably the owners had messages, drawings written all over the doors (the one's on which you can write, and or scribble things..you are given chalk to scribble, draw whatever you like to your hearts content), this added to the unique setting of the room/hotel and made you feel much more at home. BTW they have painting hanging all over the wall, at least in the dining area, and you can purchase whichever you like...we bought one, lovely for my mom in law, she was happy with it and put it up in her living space immediately.

I wished they served lunch and dinner too. Now we went on the weekend on a Sunday to be exact and most of the places were closed for dinner. However there are many little restaurants, pubs and shops for shopping in the area. There is one a minute down from the hotel itself almost. More so pubs were open. I am not into pubs mainly because I do not drink plus, we have kids and don't think it is the right enviro for them. Other family members went to a couple and said they enjoyed being there.

We planned on doing a fishing trip but were not able to due weather conditions, but I hear it is great thing to do while there. Anyways we did visit St. Michael's Mount. This is an interesting place to visit. You are able to walk over to this site when the tide goes out or the "sea parts" my own version and or ride in boats to get across. Now I saw people wading through the water even before the tide went out properly. We paid 2 pounds per person to go across, because tide had not gone out but walked "across the sea" on our way back. Pretty interesting. Now the trek up after going across/walking is something to reckon with. You should wear comfortable and flat shoes when going unless of course you don't mind going up very steep steps with heels on.

A bit off topic there...anyways if you are ever in Cornwall visit this little Boutique Hotel you will not be sorry I promise you, unless of course something change drastically since I left, this is one of the places we plan to visit again on our trip next year..we might also check out the one they have in Brighton, yes there is another there, hence how we came to know about the on in Penzance .

Thank you one and all at Artist hotel we had the best stay..you should be proud of your hotel and brand. Def return.

One little prob, did not like that people could stare right into your room from next building..but we fixed that by drawing our curtains when needed to.

Room Tip: Each room appears to be different so enjoy. Sleep quality had nothing to do with room, but had to op...

We have stayed here on several occasions on our way to, and coming back from, the Isles of Scilly. Although you know the rooms are all different it does add to the pleasure of the stay when instead of a standard hotel type room you are escorted into a room which is unique. We have stayed in four different rooms so far, particularly like the one with the blackboard, but they are all good. Despite all rooms being differently they are consistent in high standards of cleanliness, with comfortable beds, good showers, etc. The mulit-tasking staff have been consistently welcoming and helpful, and the breakfasts are worth a special mention, especially the scrambled eggs.

We spent the weekend of May 1-4 in Penzance and booked this guesthouse on the back of Tripadvisors reviews. All is true: the guesthouse is perfectly located very close to the town centre and yet in a cosier and quieter road, Chapel st. with nice shops and lovely pub/restaurants. It is strategically positioned close to bus stops and a few yards away from the coastal path. We had asked for a quiet room and were given a very beautifully furnished and spatious double room overlooking the internal yard, with en suit bathroom. The breakfast, included, is just delicious, with made to order tasty choices, both sweet and savoury, excellently cooked and with very fine and fresh ingredients. Staff is extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful. A place we strongly recommend and to return if back in west Cornwall.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front might be nosier as overlooking a pub entrance

Dear Rossella66,

Thank you for taking the time to write such a splendid review.

We are very happy to hear we live up to our previous reviews! We are very lucky to be situated so close to the town centre on Chapel Street which itself is quite beautiful with the tall buildings and quirky little shops and so close to the seafront.

We are especially delighted to hear you enjoyed your breakfast, we take great pride in using locally sourced produce and creating the dishes.

We hope to see you again one day here or at our sister hotel in Brighton :-)

Kind regards,

Tina, Hannah and the AR Team

Very comfortable room, although the tele could have been a little bigger! Stand alone shower is now a must for us and this was perfect for us. Thick fluffy towels make such a difference. Mustn't forget the breakfast:-excellent quality, lovely fresh local produce and wonderful butter and jams.
A very enjoyable guest house for a couple of nights.

I've stayed in Penzance on numerous occasions, in accommodation ranging from the extremely basic to the very over-frilly and old fashioned. No one has ever quite seemed to get it right in this corner of Cornwall, away from the holiday camps of the north coast and the quaint B&Bs inland. When we were considering where to stay for our weekend away, and as ever booking far too late, we happened to stumble across The Artist Residence by chance. I'm really pleased we did too!

The guesthouse is based in a large old Georgian house on historic Chapel Street. Formerly one of the main streets of the town, leading from the harbour to the market, this is now an interesting mix of pubs and restaurants, small boutique style independent shops and guesthouses. Right in the middle of this eclectic and increasingly cool mix of businesses is The Artist Residence. Behind the huge red door is a small reception area leading onto a lounge doubling as a gallery. It's a big, bright space filled with reclaimed and repurposed furnishings and original artwork. The rooms themselves continue this theme, each being decorated along a theme, or by a particular artist. Our room (No.12) was a "house double" - not nearly as individual as the "arty" rooms, but it was still very tastefully decorated with large framed book covers and some interesting vintage furnishings. This included an old Singer sewing table, with the ironwork treadle still attached! The bed was big, comforable and set on a gorgeously soft rug which covered exposed floorboards. All in all a very tastefully decorated, superbly comfortable room.

Breakfast is served in the gallery, and is just as good as the other reviews will testify. Freshly made fruit compote and greek yoghurt is provided in repurposed jam jars and glasses for you to add home made granola. The juices are freshly squeezed and the coffee is amazingly good for a guesthouse. Fluffy pancakes are available, alongside more traditional breakfast offerings, all expertly prepared using great qualitiy ingredients. I'm often tempted to skip tired old breakfasts in guesthouses, but this is quite an event and not to be missed.

The Artist Residence is all about the little touches - coffee served on arrival in your room or in the lounge, the weather forecast and tide times on the blackboard in the lounge, the little milk jugs with udders! But it's not all surface dressing - the service is great too. The staff team is polite, helpful and genuinely interested. Nothing is too much trouble, and they know the area and the local attractions well too. If you're looking for the quality and service of a country guesthouse in a more accessible urban setting, this is just the place.

One word of warning - the booking and invoicing system used by the Artist Residence group is extremely complex and difficult to interpret. I'm still not convinced I haven't overpaid for our stay and will be firing off an email shortly to check - the staff seem to find it just as tricky at times, though they do try really hard to help!
