“Staff cant handle being questioned....”

First arrived very welcomed was not explained of a wait but actully waited 1 hour !!! Orderd a chorizo salad and looked like a fry up when i questioned the fact it was greasy girl quoted " chorizo does that "... Few minutes on heard the 2 staff talking and about me !! The male staff then askd if all ok... The girl came back later and said the chef apoliges for it being greasy i explained i understood chorizo lets out fat i cook with it myself but i didnt expect fried pototoes and fried bread (croutons)... The staff seemed they couldnt handle the comments customers said and would find an away to escape to gossip to each other in front of us !! I understand there was only one chef and would not mind have waited but would be nice to be told that at the beginning....

I can only apologise about your experience with us on Wednesday. It was an unexpectedly busy lunchtime and I'm surprised you were not informed of the delay in service as the waiting staff were told to keep everyone up to date with the back up. There is no excuse for the unprofessional behaviour of the waiting staff, rest assured I shall make this perfectly clear.

I'm disappointed you did not enjoy your warm salad, it is proving to be a popular dish, I think we served 6 that lunchtime. I recall you changed the dressing from the sweet chilli to the balsamic and this may account for the greasiness as there is no oil in the chilli dressing which works really well with the oil released by the chorizo. I should have realised the salad would not work with an oil based dressing, sorry. My croutons are homemade all butter oven baked, refreshed in the oven before serve, and I'm disappointed you felt they were like fried bread.

We are trying to build the food knowledge of our staff and their communication skills, we shall use your experience to draw their attention to how they can improve their service.

I'm surprised you rated us as 2 for value as a salad of warm chorizo and potato, feta, black olives, croutons, rocket in a sweet chilli dressing at £6.95 is, we feel, extremely good value. Good value homemade food being integral to our ethos. I also thought we had reduced your bill because of your comments.

I apologise again for your experience and can only hope you give us another chance to show what we are capable of.

Regards,

Bill Johnston

Relaxed atmosphere and perfect food. A great find. We will certainly be back. The menu is inventive, its inexpensive and the cafe is well situated. Impressive!

“Great food, not so great service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2014

The food was excellent, but unfortunately the staff are incredibly unwelcoming and rude!

There's no 'hello - how are you?' instead a blank stare - not even 'what can I get you?'. Working in a restaurant myself I try my hardest to make the customer comfortable and spark up light conversation, but here, they just seem like they don't want to be there.

Also, I know there is NEVER nothing to do, but the young girl would just stand there, head in hand, staring into space. Surely the skirting boards could have been dusted, stock could be rotated, the paper towels could have been picked up from the floor in the toilet or any type of cleaning could have been done!

We arrived, and (who I assume to be) owner welcomed us, which was great - but why didn't the waitress?

At one point, a customer came in, both the waiter and waitress had their back to him before the waiter turned around, looked at him, and carried on; not even a hello! Why is it so difficult to greet someone? Manners cost nothing, and I'm sure if a customer was that impolite, they wouldn't be happy!

We paid, and again, the waitress looked at us, said nothing and carried on her way.

It's such a shame, with such a lovely establishment the staff just seem to not care. Maybe if they take the time to chat and even have a laugh with the customers they might even enjoy their job!

I hate to be so cynical but if I would like to know how my customers felt after dining.

Just a simple 'hello - how are you' and a SMILE would make such a difference!

Hi Jessica

Firstly, thanks for taking the time to do a review, it's always good to get feedback.

We're really disappointed to hear how badly our staff handled you and themselves during your visit, we clearly have the need for some staff training sessions.

We absolutely agree that there is nothing worse than disinterested and impolite service, and will prioritise instilling in all our staff these core service sector values.

We're glad that you liked our cafe and the food you ate, but you highlight the fact that this is just part of the visit experience and we need to up our game.

Thanks again for your constructive comments.

Kind regards

Bill & Nicole

“A little gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 March 2014

Bill the guy serving is so helpful. We asked him what his name was so we could name him on Trip Advisor, so here he is! Great selection of teas and he was very helpful and patient, as choosing cakes/ tea etc can be a serious and lengthy business for us mature ladies. We had a fantastic cream tea and great coffee/ tea served in kitsch tea cups/ teapots etc. We loved this place!

“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2014 via mobile

We visited for a cream tea and it was lovely. Superb value for money, fantastic fresh scones with plenty of butter, jam and cream. The atmosphere was pleasant and relaxed and the gentleman serving was friendly and attentive. An all round positive experience and we will certainly visit again when we are next in Penzance.
