“Very Good Hotel”
Reviewed 23 March 2013

We stayed at this hotel from Monday until Friday on 18th to 22nd March, travelling by coach with Shearings on an all inclusive holiday. We were greeted warmly by the reception staff. We were in a seaview twin room which had been refurbished and un like most other Shearings hotels that we have stayed at in the winter months the room was kept very warm with the heating on and hot water available at all times throughout our stay. The bathroom was a good size and had a shower over the bath. The seaview was awesome. The food during our stay was excellent, as with other Shearing hotels there was a good selection on the menu which changed each evening, I must say congratulations to the chef as the food was the best we have ever experienced with Shearings. The only gripe we had with the dinning arrangements was we had requested a table for 2 but we were given a table for 4 so had to share. I know that requests can not always be quaranteed but out of 10 Shearings hotels we have visited this is the first time our request had not been granted. The evening entertainment was varied each evening, and was enjoyable going on a little later then usual on all nights except the last, which was a bonus as we feel 10.30 is far to early to finish. Altogether I can thoroughly recommend this hotel. One of the best run Shearings Hotels we haved stay in. Well done to all the staff at Bay St Ives Hotel.

The views over the bay are stunning I have to agree. We have a prime spot here in St Ives overlooking the bay.
I will pass on your comments to the chefs, great to hear that you enjoyed the meals provided. Regarding the matter of tables for two, if they are requested then we try to oblige. If you are ever this way again and decide to stay with us please give me a call and I will personally put your requests forward to ensure that they are honoured.
We do have varied entertainment from music for dancing, to vocalists, a magician to bingo so hopefully there is something for everyone.
Its also good to hear that even though we have been enduring possibly the coldest March for years you were given a warm welcome and had a comfortable stay.
Hope to see you again in the future.

We stayed at this hotel from Monday until Friday on a self drive package from Shearings. We were greeted warmly by the reception staff who went out of their way to show us the lift, dining room, bar and entertainment area. We were on the second floor and found our room at the back of the hotel a good size, clean and in good state of repair. The bathroom lacked a shower however which was a slight disappointment as we as a couple prefer showers. Having said that the piping hot water was plentiful and of a good pressure. An upgrade was available to a room with a sea view but as we live in Torquay, the lack of view at the back was not a problem to us.We had paid an extra £20 to garage our car off road for the week. The only gripe was the garage was fairly dark and we found it difficult to maneuver because of the other closely parked cars. The food during our stay was excellent, with a good selection on the menu which changed each evening, albeit some of the courses were a tad on the small side in particular the Full English. My wife is on a strict Gluten free diet but this presented no problems to the chef. Each morning my wife was offered a choice of at least four different dishes for our evening meal which the chef amended to suit her. We have stayed in four / five star hotels before who have not managed one special. On the first morning the manager had dispatched someone to the local Tesco to buy a gluten free loaf so that she might have toast. The evening entertainment was varied each evening, and there are plenty of extremely comfortable seating away from the stage area. Altogether I can thoroughly recommend this hotel, and find myself perplexed by less favourable comments by some other contributors. Some people are never happy with their lot. We were each given four free drinks each day and that did help with the cost of our break. Well done Bay St Ives Hotel.

Its great to hear that you were happy with the dietary requirements being met by the chefs. There are a great deal of people who have to manage different requests these days and the staff are aware of what to offer. We always try to please as best we can.
We have had a number of bedrooms refurbished this winter and the plan is to continue with this rolling plan. We have rooms that have baths, some have showers and some have both. If a special request is made then we try to oblige where possible.
If you are ever thinking of visiting St Ives again in the future give me a call and I will do my utmost to oblige. Remember the whole booking can be made at the hotel and we currently have the book before you leave offer on that give 15% off the brochure price for your next stay.
Hope to see you again in the near future.

There are many dietary needs that people have these days and the chefs are very able to adapt the menus to suit. It is great to hear that your husbands requirements were dealt with well, I will pass on these comments to the chefs.
The hotel had 16 bedrooms refurbished this January and the company are looking to continue with this programme either later this year or early next.
Give us a call if you and your friends decide to come and pay us a visit again and we may be able to allocate you one of the newly refurbished rooms, we have had many positive comments about the colour scheme used. Thank you for taking time to write the review

Request for a move to a more convenient room due to medical condition was treated sympathetically by staff and we were given a room on the ground floor. Food was well presented and served almost immediately. Our waitress Kristina was very pleasant and efficient and so was Kevin Shearings Driver . Apart from the fact that the weather was extremely cold and windy for the first 2 days of the holiday it was most enjoyable.

We try to accomodate peoples requests as best we can and it is good to hear that we did so on this occasion.
I will pass on your comments to Kristina that will certainly make her day.
The cold winds have passed us by now we hope and summer is on the way. Look out for those special deals that Shearings have available and if you visit St Ives again give me a call so that I can deal with any requests that you may have that can help make your stay an enjoyable one.

We went to the Bay hotel in St Ives
We happy trio of husbands and wives
But the hotel there was cold and bleak
You would not have wanted another week
Despite complaints which were persistent
The heating remained non existent
The wind blew open the hotel doors
There was a deathly chill on all the floors
The guests shuffled round like the living dead
Swaddled in clothes from foot to head
But we'll have the last laugh you energy miser
We'll get you back on trip advior

The heating had been on constantly and the winds were blowing straight onto the front of the hotel, therefore making it hard to keep the warm and with open plan lounges this is also a challenge. It is not like trying to keep your own home warm as people are always in and out.The fact that the front door was blowing open was that the guests had severed the door catch which was changed the following morning when a new on could be purchased.
The weather throughout the whole country has been very severe and it had been reported on the local news that it was the coldest days in March since 1987.
The weather today as I write is bright and sunny so it is possible to see everything in a different light. Short breaks in March are subject to indifferent weather. It has been known that February and March in the past have been warm and sunny.

My wife and I and 6 others stayed at this Shearings Hotel last October for my birthday weekend.

The hotel whilst old was clean and tidy, and all the staff very very pleasant and helpful.

The food was good, and bearing in mind this 3 day weekend only cost us £99.00 each, was sufficent for our needs.

The first night the hotel was a little cold but by the next day was all was fine.

All 8 of us agreed this was a good break at a fantastic price and we all said we would visit it again

This was not the first Shearings hotel we have been to, nor will it be the last.

Having just stayed there for the 3 day weekend , I found the food good , but could do with more choice , some decorating needs doing, and the heating needs attention , staff friendly , but like a lot of these old Hotels , it needs some updating

Room Tip: We had an upgraded room with sea view , but these are facing the road so some traffic noise would be...

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. As part of Shearings group we have had some refurbishment work completed this January. There is a rolling pattern that will continue year on year.
I will pass on your positive comments to the chef as he will be pleased.
The breakfast choices are varied from cereals to continental,to full English, kippers and ham and eggs and more. The dinners consist of 3 choices of starters, 5 main courses and 4 sweets.
