We booked this 3 night break under the Shearings self-drive banner at a competitive cost. The hotel is owned by the Shearings group. We were expecting a dated hotel - it was that - but were pleasantly suprised by the lovely bathroom and superb view from the bedroom window. Unfortunately we had to go off (at 3:00p.m.) as the room was not ready. A minus point was being seated for all meals with another couple - without being asked!!!! This could have been very embarassing if we had not liked the other couple and had asked to be moved. With small tables it was a little cramped, and there were unused tables. A limited choice for each course was fine - starters and desserts were a little disappointing in both quantity and quality. Main courses were of a good standard with a nice assortment of vegetables each night. Fruit and cereals at breakfast were followed by a served plated breakfast. The hot meals were perfectly adequate, although served on small plates. A choice of fish was offered. Tea and coffee were generously topped up on request. For a break in St Ives this hotel has a great position. However the clientele when we visited were virtually all retired people - no children in evidence.

Room Tip: The views from rooms at the front of the hotel are excellent - however some of these rooms are fairl...

Shearings holidays together with Bay and Coast and Country hotels offer great deals from a Monday to Friday break to a weekend away.
We cater for all ages from tots in cots, to teenagers who like to surf the net, to walkers who love to enjoy the outdoors and those who just want to relax.
We aim to get rooms ready as early as possible however you are welcome to use the facilities in the hotel whilst waiting for your room. WIFI is now available in the lounge area so why not enjoy a coffee and cake whilst you catch up.
Tables of two are available and many are requested, it is not a problem to assist with this request.
The company has a rolling plan with refurbishing so its great to see the changes as they develop, the one thing that will not change is the great views we have overlooking Porthminster beach.

Arrived having prebooked parking to be told parking was at rear found dingy poorly lit garage space fit for 10 cars already containing 20 managed to squeeze narrowly avoiding other vehicles i drive a focus anything bigger I would have given up as did the guests complaining loudly at reception.Had too wait 2 days before been able to safel drive car out.Access from rear of hoel is up steep flght of steps and accross busy road.
Allocated room was reeking of damp wallpaper we immediately rejected it alternetive rooms offered were at least damp free but one was missing a floorboard.
Dining area is on several levels with sevaral stairs, part of restaurant is in basement with steep flight of stairs also smelt of damp.I would not recomend this hotel to anyone with poor mobility or with breathing disorders.

Room Tip: choose rooms on first floor east end of hotel with sea view

The parking in the garage to the rear of the hotel is undercover and the lights are activated when a car moves in. Unfortunately we cannot monitor the parking of some of the customers some of whom seem to find it hard to park and be respectful to others.
The hotel does have two dining areas and many regular customers enjoy the Godrevy restaurant as it is slightly more intimate and quieter than the upstairs dining room.
I am pleased that the staff were accomodating on your arrival.

Having spent a reasonable amount of money to spend an evening at the bay hotel, my overriding feeling is one of disappointment. As we entered the reception area I was struck by just how dated this hotel was. We were upgraded to a "superior" room with sea view on arrival which was a lovely touch by the receptionist. The view was amongst the very best you could wish for and it was this that I felt attracted the price tag not the quality of the accommodation. The room, although clean, was plain and looks dated when compared to accommodation with similar tariffs. The bed was uncomfortable and shower could only be set to either scalding hot or freezing cold. Breakfast was only served between 8-9 which I felt was simply too restrictive, that said the food was good and staff were very attentive. If you are happy to stay somewhere clean and tidy with views to die for and are not overly fussed with the quality and decor, I would happily recommend this hotel.

Yes it is true that the views from any of the sea view rooms is great and those from a superior room are even more stunning as you have that bay window which captures so much.
The hotel is busy all year round and there is a rolling pattern for redecorating rooms etc. I do feel that the offer that has recently be posted on late rooms at 79.00 for two bed and breakfast is a great deal. Where else would you get a deal like that.
Thanks for posting your review.

Ok for a weekend (just). Breakfast is served up until 9am even on a Sunday. No mention of this in the room book or card. We missed out ! Only 6 (+2 disabled) car spaces for 85 rooms. Prebook only. Alternative is a while away.

The hotel has a garage to the rear of the hotel which caters for 16 spaces plus the 6 that are available at the front of the hotel. The hotel generally caters for three coaches and a number of self drive guests. This particular weekend saw the change in our tour pattern which meant that rooms were sold on lateroom.com and a great deal was to be had for bed and breakfast. We had a number of self drive customers also in who had pre booked car parking so we did not have space for all the extra bookings although we managed to park some.

We booked this last minute to catch some sun at the end of our stay in Cornwall. We found an excellent deal and were given a lovely sea view room. The staff were all really friendly, the room was clean and pleasant (the view stole the show though!) and the hotel seemed to have lots of conveniences with a coffee shop, bar, restaurant and nice touches in the room. Great breakfast too. This hotel was great value for money, it isn't the most luxurious or freshly decorated (I think a lot of the customers are probably older coach trippers) but I'd definitely stay again.

Shearings have some great deals available at the moment so keep your eyes peeled. St Ives is a great place to stay whatever the weather.
The hotel is in a great location and has something to cater for everyone, from the coffee shop with WIFI to evening entertainment and bingo.
Thank you for posting your favourable comments, please do come back and see us again and see the further changes to be made in January 2014.

wow what an incredible place. our second visit to this hotel and what a brilliant Christmas we had. Made some fantastic friends and put on at least six pounds in weight with all of the delicious food. Entertainment and staff were all excellent, hotel manager worked herself to the bone to make Christmas a special treat. well done and thank you.

Room Tip: upgrade to superior.

Christmas is just around the corner and we are already making plans for this year. I have been making sure that Caroline ( reception) gets the Santa outfit ready and she may even make an addition to her many hats.
Its good to know that you made a number of friends during your stay as many people do. Many of them are returning again this Christmas.
Don t forget that we are doing TURKEY AND TINSEL breaks from 28.10.13 so why not let Christmas come early.
Thank you for taking the time to write this fab review, hope to see you again in the not so distant future.

We stayed at this Shearing hotel last week and had a pleasant surprise. The room was spacious and clean, the restaurant was clean and the food excellent. The reception staff were courteous and well informed, so everything ran smoothly. The waiting on staff in the restaurant were well attentive and good. The hotel was full so the staff were really working hard and doing a good job. There was one drawback with the hotel, it was at the top of a hill, and a bit of a trek from the town. We were in a sea view room at the front of the hotel and the views were very good. A walk every morning on the beach gave an appetite. Well worth another visit.

Room Tip: Superior room with sea view

The team here at the St Ives Bay work hard to ensure holiday enjoyment and when you work in such a beautiful place with stuuning views it makes the job easier.
As I have said many times before the views are stunning whatever the season.
The walk into St Ives is down hill and we do have taxi cards for anyone who wishes to use one for making their way back to the hotel. St Ives Cars 01736 799200 is one that we use. Once down on Porthminster beach a paddle in the clear blue waters is a must.
Hope to see you again in the near furure, thank you for writing this review.
