“Does what it says on the tin!”
Reviewed 16 August 2013

We visited this place after we failed to book anywhere else - it seems to be the place where people end up when they haven't planned ahead. We've been in previous years but saw that the place had changed hands and that menu/theme had completely changed. To start there was no white wine, the waitresses all had long hair which wasn't tied up and they made no effort to check that our meal was ok. I saw a number of people get up from their seat to ask for things. We heard the chef guffawing from the back and the waitresses chatting about things that were behind the counter (cigarettes, umbrellas) and their days off. I've never heard radio music piped into a restaurant. The menu looked a bit dodgy but we ordered and actually when the food came it was better than we were expecting given what we'd seen already. Kids enjoyed their cheeseburgers, steak and ale pie was good and chilli was reasonable. The staff need to work on their customer service.

“We hate tips!”
Reviewed 4 August 2013 via mobile

Drawn in by a Brighton-esque feel of what looked like a nice place, there was no menu outside but a roughly hand written note on the window informed us that the food was 'cheap and good'. The menu gave us hope. The food took ages to arrive but was nice. However, the whole experience was completely ruined by the 3 lazy and frankly rude waitresses. If the manager doesn't know how these girls act, I feel sorry for his naivety. If he does, I'm not sorry his cafe will be shut soon. They didn't welcome ANYONE who walked in. Made EVERYONE wait at least 10 minutes before they went over and took an order and to our complete disbelief, immediately began discussing every customer in a negative manner right next to us (as we were sitting near the counter). They made absolutely no effort to hide their annoyance at the slightest request from any customer. It's a shame as the breakfast was good but the ridiculous waiting staff completely ruined it.

“Wow, what a meal”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

Went in this place for breakfast, ordered a 2 light English Breakfasts, a full English breafast and a "Cornish Gut Buster".

Well i'll say i have never had such a meal in all my life, 4 large oval plates of extremely well cooked and presented food, the gut busters was so big it was obviously hard to fit on the plate, and there was no way hell i could finish it, absolutely massive. Teas were great and nice bugs mugs of coffee, and also a huge plate of toast served with the meals. Must admit the the place is lacking something, however the food was superb, and great value for money.

Will definately go again.

“Honestly the worst restaurant I've ever been to.”
Reviewed 28 July 2013

At a quick glance, the place looks rather inviting. We saw the exotic meats they had on offer and decided to book a table.
We arrived slightly early and were seated at our reserved table. When ordering drinks we were told "there are no jugs for water, so I'll just keep brining you glasses of water". Not really much of a bother, but when you have to ask over and over again for another glass of water without one arriving, it gets annoying.

The starters arrive. Chilli prawns on iceberg lettuce with a bit of tomato and cucumber (not the most exciting choice to say the least) and swimming in oil and water! Couldn't taste any chilli and they had been cooked for far too long. Had to ask for a bowl of water to rinse fingers off in and we were given a bowl of boiled water in which my girlfriend burnt herself. In another starter the garlic mushrooms, didn't taste of garlic and were also swimming.

The worst part of the whole evening was when our mains arrived. There was a strong smell of what we could only describe as dog food... We continued to eat the food that we thought was very poor as far as St. Ives standards go. Eventually we had a sniff of one of the steaks which to our disgust smelt foul, rancid and wretch worthy. At that point we all had to stop eating as we felt sick!

When we told the waiter, he told us he would take the steak and starter off the bill for that person and apologised. We felt more could have been done to rectify being served terrible food.

When it came to paying the bill we were presented a total of £67 which we thought was far too much seeing as we had only managed half our meals before being put off.

We decided to send our best negotiator to reason with the staff about how much we thought we should pay for the bad evening, £50. The head chef/manager came out and was very rude and angry towards us and he gave no apology!

Other tables were also having a bad time. Waiting ages for starters, having to go to the Co-op up the road to buy wine, being served the wrong meal...the list goes on.

On a final note, the staff were under trained and one dressed like he'd just come off the beach. The place was also not very clean.

This restaurant needs to change quick as it is clearly struggling to compete with many other highly recommended places around St. Ives.
