“Lovely Cottage but awful access”
Reviewed 19 November 2012

We have stayed here twice now, each time for a fortnight. The cottage is lovely, actually two semi-detached cottages but in this rather remote area you are unlikely to get noisy neighbours (they are all at St Ives!) Everything is very clean and modern though if you are 6 feet tall the very low kitchen ceiling would be difficult. The toilet and excellently powerful shower are down stairs which is a bit awkward if you need to use the facilities at night (very steep stairs). The location is lovely, marred only by a large plastic contraption in front of the kitchen window. Electricity is now included and there is very adequate heating and a good flat screen TV. The double bed has a rather hard mattress which my wife found a little difficult The only major negative point is the access. The main track is awful but you can drive through a semi-industrial area on a reasonable tarmac road. The car park has a very narrow entrance coming off a very narrow lane and is very difficult to negotiate in the dark. One wet dark evening I got it wrong and badly scraped my car on the granite wall. The owners reckoned I was the first visitor to come a cropper in this way. I'm afraid this has thoroughly put us off another visit. This is a pity because Trevethoe Cottage is one of the few good value cottages near St Ives (many are over priced). I'm afraid the owners just don't seem to understand the difficulties experienced by motorists in two wheel drive cars.

Room Tip: Location only marked down because of the serious access problems. Otherwise it would have deserved...

We are a friendly, approachable, family-run business and as we live 'on-site' we are extremely accessible to guests if they need to speak to us about anything. We would not expect anyone to struggle with any aspect of their stay at Trevethoe, and if a problem should arise, we would hope that it would be brought to our attention DURING the holiday period, rather than right at the end, so that we might have the opportunity to offer a solution, for example easily offering an alternative place to park closeby to the cottages. This is genuinely the first time anyone has mentioned damaging their car whilst parking, and I would point out that the majority of visitors that stay here own 2-wheel drive cars and do not experience any difficulty with access or parking. Indeed our own tractors are 2-wheel drive! I hope that, looking at our website and seeing the number of re-bookings we take is testament to the fact that Trevethoe remains a place that many people choose to return to again and again for their holiday.

We are repeat visitors to the cottages and have always had an excellent time.
As with any holiday in the UK the weather can be very unpredicatable. However, even when the weather is fairly poor there are lots of places to visit.
The cottages are comfortable, clean and very well looked after. Since our last stay the owners have installed a lovely new bathroom and removed the electricity meter system.
A small part of the road to the cottages is a farm track but what else would you expect staying on a farm? We have never found it to be difficult to drive to the cottages to park.
Please try these cottages they are amazing.

Stayed here self-catering for a week and overall we were pleased with our stay. The house is one of a pair of semis built out of granite in the traditional Cornish style and has a double bedroom and two singles. The house was in tip top decorative state and was spotlessly clean when we arrived; the level of equipment was also excellent. There was however a musty smell in a couple of rooms which indicates a bit of damp. The owner had provided a lovely cream tea for our arrival and there were fresh flowers on the table - very nice touches. The house has large lawn on two sides and there was a picnic table for eating meals outside. The location is free of any noise and overlooks open countryside. Thus far everything fine. However, the one drawback for us was the access to the house. The instructions provided to get to the house take you down a 3/4 mile farm track that is only suitable for, well farm traffic i.e tractors. We had great difficulty negotiating the track in a family car and were shocked at the state of the track. Things did take a turn for the better when on arrival at the farm, the owner said there was an alternative tarmac road into the farm with only a very short un-made section!!!! Why this information is saved until after arrival I can't imagine. There was however still a short section of dreadful lane to get from the farm to the cottage, but is was possible to leave the car at the farm and walk (a bit of a pain). This was such a shame because parking in front of the cottage was excellent. This access issue is why I marked the cottages down on location. The second slight issue was that electricity was by coin meter and this would work out expensive if the electric space heating was used. Overall the cottage was fine for us and did represent excellent value for money.
