Treloyhan Manor Hotel

Reviewed 18 June 2012

Just back from four nights at Treloyhan Manor. Stayed in a non en-suite room on a special offer. This was very good value with a lovely three course meal every night with tea/coffee. Breakfasts also very good with lots of choice. Views of the sea from the dining room. Yes, this is a Christian hotel and one reason why I chose it but there is no onus on any visitor to take part in any activity they do not want to. Dinner is eaten round tables for eight which makes for interesting conversations and a chance to talk to other guests from all around the country. A lovely walk through the gardens and along a footpath (steep in places) to the nearest beautiful beach (Porthminster) takes 15 mins or so and another 10 mins takes you into St Ives. I found the staff helpful and friendly.

Stayed a few nights view good bedroom small and dated food poor service poor. Have noticed comment from manager on previous comment regarding Wi Fi I am computer engineer and coverage of wifi in a hotel has nothing to do with the ISP of the customer it is the range of their wireless router and or access points that give the coverage. Yes it is a Christian hotel and it makes no bones about it and if you book direct then that is what you can expect. However if you book through trip advisor or the other sites that they try to sell late booking on then provision must be made so that you do not have to suffer wall to wall christianity what ever that is as a group who was in when i was there took over the place and were certaiinly not friendly.
This hotel needs to decide is it a general hotel or one where the christians have all fhe facilities???

I have read your review, and it seems very unusual for you to have waited for nine months before writing of your displeasure for a stay you had nearly a year ago, especially as our business is ever changing and you are referring to an experience some time ago.
Regarding our WiFi I am sure you must agree with my point that differing computer specifications and network providers, do affect computers connectivity and functionality, therefore this does have an affect on individuals ability to connect to the internet differently and at different rates, and although we do have standard hardware and signal boosting transmitters on every floor throughout the building, people may experience some variations.
We have made some significant changes to our restaurant operation and personnel over the past nine months, as reflected in our many awards and I am sure you would see the improvements should you decide to return for a subsequent visit.

Attended the location for a wedding and had an excellent day. Everything was well catered for well organised. The location was excellent. The food delicious and the staff did everything possible to make sure it all went smoothly. Free wifi, which was surprising considering you pay at most locations.
The only negative thing was some of the staff were 'international' and could not answer any questions as their command of English was limited to ask someone else.
But all in all a great day...

Room Tip: If I stayed here, I would want a sea view

Thank you for your feedback and great to hear that you enjoyed the wedding. I do apologise that you did not find our overseas students helpful, as when we put our team together we do invest a great deal of time and energy on training and development as part of our Investors In People Award. I will certainly look at how we can avoid the same instance happening in the future, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Treloyhan again soon.

Gorgeous property with a lovely big room and a great sea view. Avoid the dinner unless you're an avid 'bible basher' :o) but still a lovely stay even if you're not. The staff were helpful and friendly and we enjoyed our stay. It is a real christian community atmosphere so if you're a bit unnerved by that then perhaps look elswhere.

Thank you for your feedback, and I was glad to hear that you enjoyed your recent stay, although I would say your comments regarding our guests - who vary daily, and dinner were unfounded, especially as you did not even have dinner with us during your stay. We look forward to welcoming you back again to Treloyhan in the near future.

Very un-welcoming, obnoxious staff especially in there so called 'resturant' poor quality food! Also no communication what so ever. Rooms are run down and extremely dull and doesn't even have pictures on the wall! I was glad to come home. I'd start employing better staff and try harder in your work place.

I was disappointed to hear that we did not meet with your expectations on this occasion, especially as our staff who are undoubtedly our biggest asset, score an average of over 98% satisfaction on our ratings for their high levels of hospitality, service and going the extra mile.
In a Victorian building such as this, room specifications may vary, but we do endeavour at all times to ensure that our rooms do meet individuals needs at time of booking.

Treloyan Manor Hotel is a Methodist Retreat that would like to be a hotel but doesn’t know how to do it. I recently spent a week there with a group of walkers, using it as a base to walk part of the South West Coast Path. We got a reasonable rate for the week on a DBB + packed lunch basis in en suite rooms with a nice sea view. However:

o We decided to come down a night earlier and for the same rate found ourselves in one of 7 double rooms sharing one toilet and one bath/toilet, neither of which had a hand basin. 3 girls in our group found themselves sharing and others in the group with non-en-suites paid the same per head as those with en-suite facilities.
o Meals were at 6.30 p.m. preceded by grace. However, we had planned an arduous day’s walking on the Friday but, at 24 hours’ notice, the hotel rescheduled dinner to 6.00 p.m. to accommodate the concert they had been practicing for most of the week.
o The food was of a good quality and more vegetables were available on request, but the portions for hungry walkers were inadequate: 2” square pieces of fish and unbelievable small slivers of treacle tart.
o No TVs in the rooms, apparently because they were considered antisocial.
o Choir practice in the main open area OR possibly intense biblical debates in the only, adjoining lounge – that was our choice and not a very social one either
o If you are determined to stay there and are considering paying extra for the packed lunch pop up to Tescos for better quality at a fraction of the price (one of our group had salad sandwiches: 2 slices of brown bread, no spread, just lettuce, that’s all)
o Coffee shop and bar: no, you queue at reception with everyone else waiting for attention
o If, as most of us did each evening, you can handle the nearly 3 mile round trip and decide to escape to the much more convivial atmosphere of one of the friendly pubs in St Ives, take a torch. The path in the hotel grounds is largely unlit and, while we were there, had plenty of water filled holes to dodge
o Wireless internet connection actually worked in one or two of the rooms, but mostly we had to bring our laptops down to the reception area

I consider myself a Christian but this is the intense form that gives religion a bad name. I would not consider staying at this hotel again under any circumstances.

I was delighted to hear you liked your sea view room here at Treloyhan and our very competitive rates, however I do feel the need to clarify a few of your points raised.
Treloyhan Manor Hotel is not a Methodist retreat but in fact a corporate Christian hotel recently awarded with industry accolades such as the nationally recognised Investors In People Award, CHEFS Gold Certificate for its food, and is also graded and listed with The St Ives Hotel & Guest House Association.
The room ratio you mention on the second floor for non-ensuite rooms is actually 2 rooms per bathroom, as you may not be aware we have some ensuite rooms on that floor who do not share the facilities.
We do attempt to inform all groups and individuals in advance that we currently have no TV's in rooms, and I regret that your group did not make you aware of this prior to your arrival.
Supermarkets pricing structures are obviously very differently to that of a hotel, and we make every effort to encourage any of our guests whilst they are here to make us aware of any problems during their stay that we may seek to rectify any issues immediately.
Our lit pathway to the main road adjacent to reception, is obviously the choice route we advise our guests to take after dark, as detailed in our guests information.
Regarding our WiFi connection, signal strength can vary throughout the building depending on individuals network provider, and the age and specification of their computer.
We do endeavour to operate transparently at all times, so as to avoid disappointment , and it is regretable that we did not meet with your expectations on this occasion, as all of our facilities and details are clearly listed and defined within our literature and on our website, that guests may make an informed decision before booking.

Sitting atop a hill along the coastal route of St Ives this lovely hotel has wonderful sea views and a lovely, joyful staff to help with everything. Welcoming. Calm. Quiet. Very close to town without the extreme hustle and bustle, a perfect stay... so much so I'm set to stay again in 3 weeks time.

Room Tip: Ask for room with a view... it does make the difference!
