The Keep is an immaculately clean and stylish B&B right in the centre of St. Ives. We had the Pilchard Press room, well worth the extra £10 a night as it has not only a four poster but also a wardrobe and large chest of drawers. The shower room is spotless and towels were changed daily. Furnishings and decor in the room are of a high quality and very tasteful. The bed was comfortable and thankfully the pillows were soft. We found the room a little too warm but there is an air conditioning unit which soon drops the temperature.

Breakfast is taken at a trestle table with the occupants of the other room and the tea/coffee making facilities are also communal so remember to take a dressing gown if you like an early morning brew!! The breakfasts were beautifully cooked/presented and there is an option of a daily 'special' - the eggs benedict and the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon were delicious.

St. Ives itself is gorgeous with narrow winding streets. Away from the busy harbour front it is reminiscent of Greece or Portugal and there are many cafes/restaurants and shops in the back streets so well worth exploring - however it is very steep. We ate at Cafe Coast which has a reasonably priced set menu which should suit all tastes, we opted for the seafood menu. Service was friendly and quick and best of all if you search the internet you will find a voucher for a free bottle of wine!! We also tried the Cantonese restaurant situated a couple of streets back from the harbour and enjoyed the food and good service.

Driving and parking in St. Ives is a bit of a nightmare but Carol and Mike (proprietors of The Keep) had access to a private garage adjacent to their property which was a boon and well worth the cost. Otherwise parking for The Keep is in a public car park up a hill.

We walked some of the coastal path which runs in both directions through St. Ives. Towards Zennor along the cliff is absolutely beautiful with dramatic scenery and crashing waves. Walking in the other direction towards Lelant is equally lovely but calmer, with views of golden beaches and past beautiful houses and gardens full of cactus and flowers.

A visit by car to the Minack Theatre built in the cliffs is a must, absolutely stunning. Travel west out of St. Ives and you can take in Zennor point, Gurnard Head, Mousehole (lovely harbour but very narrow for driving), St. Michael's Mount and Mullion Cove and can then cut back across to St. Ives. We also visited Padstow, which is about an hour back up the A30 and well worth a visit. We returned to St. Ives via the coastal route so we could visit all the little fishing villages and beaches en route, beautiful.

A lovely few days and The Keep was ideal in every way.

Room Tip: The Pilchard Press Room is the best option

My partner Jenny and I were lost in Cornwall last week and searching for sanctuary in St. Ives. We found it - The Keep. Don't tell too many people but as the advert says......probably the finest B&B in St. Ives!! Mike and Carol have put together the most peaceful of hideaways with a cosy mix of the modern with the underfloor heating and fabulous bathrooms - and the luxurious with the oh so comfortable beds and Moroccan décor. If they ever franchise this product out then I want to be the first to invest.........great value, great welcome, great find......... but like i said dont tell too many people!!!

In September 2011 we enjoyed The Keep for 10 days (Pilchard Press bedroom) and found a really wonderful place to spend our holiday.

The Keep is perfectly located in the old town center of St. Ives. Hidden in Hicks Court we rested absolutely undisturbed. But anyhow it’s less than 1 minute walk to the beautiful harbor area, the lovely shops on Fore Street, impressive Porthmeor Beach, Tate Gallery and all the great restaurants Mike recommended – thanks for that!

Carol and Mike are brilliant hosts who really made us feel welcome. The rooms, the furnishing and the bathroom are very elegant and high-quality. Everything is absolutely clean and excellently serviced. You can select from a large variety of continental and British breakfast and Carol surprises each morning with a Cornish special. The food is always fresh and delicious. Even the British recipes were yummy and compatible with our continental stomachs!

Carol and Mike are very helpful but never importunate. They gave us best recommendations for restaurants, for interesting places in St. Ives and for trips in the area. They also supported us in solving all the small challenges tourists may have like restaurant reservation for the 1st evening or trouble with the rental car.

Carol and Mike: We really had a fantastic time! Thank you very much for your hospitality and please keep The Keep as it is!

It was our first trip to Cornwall and St. Ives. Thanks to our lovely hosts Carol and Mike it was a very pleasant and relaxing stay from the beginning on. The Keep offers beautiful furnitured and clean rooms with ensuite modern bathrooms including under-floor heating. Although located just 3 minutes away from the harbour and beautiful Porthmeor beach the only sound we could hear during the night was the ocean and some seagulls in the morning. But the very best was Carol´s fantastic fresh home-made breakfast with the daily specials. After breakfast we enjoyed talking to Mike & Carol where to go and what to see around St. Ives and the Penwith peninsula. Summarised we can say: easy and very uncomlicated, lovely hosts who made our stay in St. Ives in their historic home a trip to remember. This may not have been our last trip to the Keep...
