“Great location without feeling crowded it by the day trippers!”
Reviewed 25 August 2013

The hotels location & view from its restaurant & bar are outstanding.
We enjoyed an average/good meal one evening. It is reasonably pricey but then it sits in one of the best locations in St Ives (in my opinion), being right on the waters front, able to view the entire bays without being swamped by the hundreds of day trippers in high season.
We were particularly impressed with the breakfast on offer, although service varied depending on the staff on duty. Reception service was excellent.
Our room, opposite the pool & sun deck area, was a disappointment. These rooms are well equipped but very small, with the bathroom being more of a bath closet than a bathroom. The door & window opened straight opposite to the pool, which is great if you don't mind having no privacy or peace & quiet. All 3 mornings of our stay we were woken early by our neighbour choosing to smoke & cough right outside our room, with our constant requests for her to choose one of the numerous other seats in the pool area being ignored.
I would recommend this hotel for its bar & outstanding location but not for the hotel room we stayed in by the pool.

Room Tip: Request a room away from the pool if you want peace & privacy.

We have visited the Pedn Olva a fair few times over the past years and its a fantastic place to go for a drink all year round. The views are stunning summer and winter the view of the harbour is beautiful. Drinks are reasonably priced too :-)

Visited the hotel today for a cream tea. The view of the harbour is amazing: without it this cream tea would have disappointed further. Scones were not fresh as they should be in Cornwall - seemed that they have been bought in from a shop and warmed in the microwave. The portions of jam and cream were small - not enough for two scones. A hotel of this quality should be doing much better.

Haven't been for a few years so it was surprising that although it had been recently refurbished it was just as good if not better than before. The rooms remain small but the tea and coffee facilities are better giving you mugs instead of piddling wee cups. With our room we had the pleasant extra of private roof top terrace which we used constantly . it was so lovely looking over at the crowded roof top bar as we luxuriated on our spacious private terrace, when people asked if they could join us unfortunately we had to decline as it was against hotel rules ( we're we being mean?)
Breakfast was good the staff were efficient reasonably welcoming and not overly friendly in a good way. The atmosphere remains relaxing even though the town is mobbed, a little oasis far from the maddening crowd and the many highly questionable tattood men ......and women.

Room Tip: Check what your view is some rooms have better than others. Some have balconies and even private roo...

stayed at the Pedn Olva many times before, always stay here when we visit St Ives. Last year the hotel was looking slightly 'worn' and ready for a make-over, this year its looking lovely again.

Had drinks and a cream tea on the upper terrace in beautiful sunshine - only negative was the flooring - a cross between astro-turf and carpet - it was soaking wet despite there being no rainfall -all just seemed a bit odd.

our room (24) is at the very end of the hotel, so pretty quiet although doors slamming on floors above were quite loud. Smallish room & bathroom but all spotlessly clean and as always the view is spectacular - as the hotel sits on the headland guests are treated to an uninterrupted sea/harbour view - fabulous at any time - day or night. and this is what makes the Pedn Olva stand out - its location on the Warren and its fabulous sea views

We ate in the restaurant, the fish meal of brill was delicious but the steak was overcooked and tough and the pepper sauce i ordered never appeared. Waiting and bar staff could all do with more customer service training - we were kept waiting for drinks & saw staff walking across the path of guests without any kind of apology. We were offered our brandy coffees as complimentary after complaining about the way the steak was cooked and the waiter was apologetic. We also felt reception staff pretty much ignored us as guests, no "good morning" as we passed through reception to the restaurant for breakfast.

This is a lovely hotel in fabulous surroundings but this late in the season guests & visitors would expect staff to be competent and confident in their approach, this is sadly lacking and spoils what should be a lovely break.

Room Tip: all rooms are good

We visited the hotel three times during our stay in St Ives, twice for drinks and once for a meal.
The hotel is beautifully situated with terraces overlooking the beach available to non residents.
The hotel is modern and well furnised and the staff are very helpful and attentive.
However the meal we had was a disappointment. The good points were - the table was overlooking the sea - superb, and the service was excellent. The bad point -The food was also very good but was verging on the nouveau cuisine style i.e. very pretty but not a lot to eat. We are not big eaters needing huge amounts of chips (which we prefer to avoid) or massive mounds of potatoes but to have what was little more than a table spoon of vegatables in total was a joke. In fact we did wait for a dish of vegatables to arrive as those on the plate were hidden under the fish which was the only thing on the plate.
Overall the hotel and staff were excellent but the food was very overpriced for what we received - nearly £50 for two pieces of fish and two tablespoons of vegatables.
We will use again for drinks but not for food I, afraid.

We arrived at 7.15pm for a booking at 7.30pm and were told we could sit at our table and look at the menu but we couldn't order until 7.30. This included drinks so we had to go to the bar and get our own and pay separately. Very strange!
The menu at the front of hotel was different to the one in the restaurant, 2 dishes were missing, the 2 we wanted, even though the dates on top were today's date. We asked if we could have 1 meal from the bar menu and although we could it was done begrudgingly. Jamie was condescending and we decided he was definitely fed up with holiday makers. We waited 15-20 mins after our lovely main dish to be given a pudding menu (they looked great) but gave up! We eventually managed to get the bill. It's almost that once the main meal was served they gave up with us. Such a shame as food was good and views stunning.
