Our favourite hotel in the South West, we have been using this quirky, friendly, family run hotel for over ten years, food and service are always excellant and our vegan friend was very impresssed with the menu specially prepared for her. We have stayed in the modern annexe with superb sea views and recently in a more tradtional room in keeping with the character of the old house. We especially enjoy a coffee or night cap in the lounge which would not be out of place in an Agatha Christie novel. Can't wait to go back.

Have stayed here on so many occasions always in early January. The welcome is always friendly not only to me but also to my dog. The rooms vary but all I have stayed in have been at least pleasant but others very good. The restaurant is excellent and the wine pricing is fantastic value. LOve the list of gins for my pre dinner drink.

Having traveled Turkey/Ireland/Scotland and Cornwall, we were a bit accommodation lagged. Small rooms heaps of stairs distant views etc, etc.

Another hotel recommended the Garrack - so glad they did.

+
Cheerful and efficient check in,
Room on ground level,
Huge room with panoramic views over St Ives and beaches,
Separate bathroom - toilet combination, luxury !
Coffee/tea facilities available and easy to use,
A laundry for guests - great !
A 25m heated pool - fantastic,
Restaurant - on a rainy night - good presentation and choice - very good food at reasonable prices (we ate at Rick Steins, St Petroc Bistro the previous evening - which at best was very poor pub food) The Garrack restaurant was far superior in every respect.
Super large king size bed - firm mattress and pillows - heaven !
Free Wi-Fi in public areas, however, during our brief stay, poor connectivity and weak signal,
The Garrack was just what we needed to re-charge the batteries - highly recommended !!

Room Tip: Request room with ocean views - you will be rewarded !

I totally agree with the previous reviewer - the Garrack has a lot going for it but is extremely tired in places and desperately needs updating. The food was wonderful but one dinner took more than two and a half hours for three courses (and that didn't include the eating of it!). Although our room was lovely and spacious, the furniture - complete with 70s tassled lampshades - was incredibly dated. The shower was also not great, but despite that, the room, and the rest of the hotel, was extremely clean. The beds were also very comfortable. We were a bit surprised when we pointed out a leak in the dining room roof (which was dripping on to my companion) to be told "it always does that when it rains heavily". Another guest dared to ask for something that wasn't on the menu - fried bread - and was told that if the chef did it for him, where would it end, everyone else would want some as well. Not really what you would expect from a three star AA rated establishment. On the whole, the food was very good, but almost a little bit too "arty farty" for its own good; one could say it was a case of style over substance. But then why didn't that style extend to the furnishings? The modern cuisine just didn't fit with the rest of the hotel, pub-themed dining room carpet included. It was annoying to have to ask for extra milk each and every morning as the only milk provided was a small jug for tea and coffee and nowhere near enough if you wanted cereal. The marmalade was also served in what appeared to be either some sort of ramekin or open-topped jam jar and had the dried residue of previous helpings smeared down the side. We found the Garrack to be a bit of an enigma to be honest. Many of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful - although the gentleman who checked us in was clinical rather than welcoming. It also gets five stars for cleanliness. But there's something not quite right when it comes to the overall experience. It's the little things that can make or break a stay and some things could have been better. Compared to similar hotels we have stayed in for the same price (and cheaper), I have to say it missed the mark. Oh, and don't expect to be able to use the pool if you have walking difficulties - it's either a long, steep hike downhill (outdoors) with no handrail or a very steep and long flight of steps (indoors). We were able to use the pool and it was lovely. But be warned, though, it is closed to hotel guests at numerous times for private functions and aqua aerobics/swimming classes (these are hourly and happen twice daily). Humpf. We so wanted to like this hotel, but I'm afraid we won't be making a return visit. If you're looking for a similar seaside, relaxed hotel package, would recommend a trip to The Pines Hotel in Swanage instead!!

Stayed at The Garrack for one night on a tour of Cornwall this summer. It was practically the only place in St Ives that allowed us to book one night only. The hotel is hidden away in a quiet residential area. We got what we expected ie a hotel with a need of refurbishment. It is quite old fashion but I guess it has it's charm.
Our room was big, eighties decor but the view made up for it. We had a beautiful view of the garden and then sea. The hotel has a pool which we didn't use.
Unlike some of the reviews we have read we didn't find the staff that helpful and the receptionist wasn't very friendly. He basically did the deed of giving us our keys and showing us to our room and charged us when we left but he was a man of few words.
At breakfast I asked for some honey and was told that if it wasn't on the table they didn't have any. It felt as if they couldn't be bothered to go and get it as I can't imagine for one minute that a hotel of that size did not have honey somewhere in their kitchens.
On departure date we were struggling with our suitcases, up some very steep stairs, when a man who worked at the hotel popped out of one of the rooms and asked whether we were off - I half expected him to ask whether we needed help, instead he said 'bye' and left us struggling with our cases . Not what I would call helpful.

We recently spent the most enjoyable five nights at this gem of an hotel and restaurant in St.Ives. The whole experience was something to remember for a long time. The staff were all extremely efficient especially in the restaurant where the food was as good as many high class restaurants we have ate in. The hotel was extremely well provided for, comfortable clean, warm and above all friendly. We could not have chosen a better hotel and restaurant for an autumn break. We will be back shortly for a longer stay.

We passed by the Garrack quite accidentally at the end of September and decided to stay for a couple of nights when we saw the charming building that literally was oozing vintage country elegance.
We can only recommend this place. A couple of mins walk brings you to the town centre and the Coastal Footpath starts right behind the hotel. But don't dare to eat anywhere than the Garrack! It was the very best food we ever had (and I used to work for a celebrity chef for some time and am rather spoilt), haute cuisine at reasonable prices, seasonal food and exceptional, modern compositions.
Furthermore, the hotel (and staff) is dog friendly and as dog owners may know it's very hard to find a high class, dog friendly place to stay.
