It would be hard to fault the handsome old building or its commanding position looking down on Porthmeor Beach. The reception area is smart and the welcome was good. Our room was in a lower and later bedroom block down a steep staircase although a helpful slope outside allows heavy cases to be manipulated relateively easily.
The room was spacious, the bed exceptionally comfortable and the panoramic view splendid. The bathroom & WC with a separate room for the washhand basin was odd - we'd prefer the WC there - while the rusting radiator struck a rather jarring note. As did the rather tumble-down greenhouse at the end of the corridor - the first thing anyone using the leisure centre would have seen.
Staff, as others have mentioned, were cheerful and helpful in most situations but the younger ones needed further training on the food and drink offer. One did not know what a Campari was or how to serve it with soda. Another was very vague about an after dinner drink and we did not feel that they were very clued up on the menu either. Maybe in October they have different staff and they seemed somewhat stratched covering the bar, dining room and reception. The dining room itself offers fantastic views for the diner but the wraparound shape means that staff cannot always observe the diner or attend to their needs.
These gripes apart, The Garrack excels with its food offer and clearly has a very talented and personable young chef. Dinner was faultless and, for anyone not staying in the hotel, well worth a detour up the hill from St Ives. Breakfast is also excellent although we agree with another reviewer that the fixed table places seemed trivial and I had to suffer brilliant sun in my eyes. Mind you, in October, it seems almost churlish to complain about such a 'nuisance'.
This hotel could so easily be a perfect idyll with a little more attention to detail but I would still be happy to recommend it to others and return myself.
