Tregenna Castle Resort
Ranked #10 of 21 Hotels in St Ives
Reviewed 24 February 2013

My wife and I are staying in St ives for a week and called in here for a coffee this afternoon( Sunday 24th Feb) first impressions always count. The driveway to the ma in car park is rutted and in extremely poor condition.A challenge for any cars suspension ! The single door from the car park into the Hotel is rotting and looks as if it hasn't been painted for years. Inside, the hotel is big, bare with a total mish mash of furniture and fittings. We had coffee in the lounge bar. Again what a weird decor. Nothing matched and nothing enticed you to want to stay and relax. We also noticed that the display fridge behind the bar was totally empty and the sink to the side of the bar was surrounded by dirty glasses, dish cloths and washing up liquid bottles ! I have to say though, that the girl who served us was very pleasant and polite. It's for this reason only, that I've given this place two stars instead of one . This place needs serious money spending on it and the services of an interior designer. Wouldn't recommend !

I am really torn on what to say about this hotel, we got a great deal and stayed on a discounted rate in the main hotel and also got discounts off eating in the restaurants so it was really good value for money.

The staff were fantastic and the shared areas such as the lobby were good and looked quite “high end”. Breakfast was excellent although service was a bit hit and miss, dinner got a bit boring after a few days with few changes to the menu and there were some strange arrangements such as food in the Brassiere but only until 7pm.

The location and grounds are stunning and the purpose built lodges and converted cottages looked great, there are also a range of sporting facilities such as golf course, tennis and badminton, gym and a swimming pool but some of these were a bit in need of an upgrade, not all the gym equipment worked and the pool was freezing. Once you got past the plush shared areas the main hotel was very tired looking with grubby carpets, creaking and wobbly floors and dirty doors, sparse spaces and random bits of furniture that looked like they’d been abandoned mid-move from one room to another.

Our room was very disappointing, there was a huge damp patch above the window, the windows were covered in condensation and it was freezing cold (I later discovered the radiators which were not on were actually switched right down and I could turn them up but there was no indication in the guest information that this was adjustable).

The furniture didn’t make sense with one large cupboard that couldn’t be reached without moving the armchair shoved in front of it the cupboard looked like it was designed to hold a fridge but there wasn’t one.

There were not enough plug sockets and the only way to use the kettle was to place it on the floor under the TV table and that left only one other socket which had to service the hairdryer, bedside light and our collection of phone and device chargers, the room was quite dusty and there was a long black hair in my bed which did not come from my head!

Worst of all though was the bathroom, the huge bath was stained and chipped and it looked like someone had attempted to repair the chipped enamel with gloss paint, the tiles were also chipped and this along with obvious black mould had again been painted over. I was also disappointed at the Wi-Fi which was only available in limited shared areas and not in rooms. There is also a long and very steep walk down (and back up) to the main town which put us off going out to eat in the evening and would make it unsuitable for anyone with mobility problems.

To be fair it is a huge place with very large grounds and 70 odd separate chalets and cottages so it must be hard work to maintain and would require a major investment to address underlying problems with damp and upgrade all rooms but they do a roaring trade in weddings and seem to have a very active holiday club for the chalets. As it was pretty busy out of season I find it hard to believe they can’t bring the rooms up to a least the standard of a Travel Lodge,

I got the overall impression the hotel was not quite sure of its identity and target market. It was sold to us as a bargain and promotes itself as a luxury hotel but if I’d been charged the full £180 a night I think I would have refused to pay.

Thank you for taking the time to write and post this extensive review and thank you for the compliments it contained.
Whilst I apologise for the condition of the bathroom (we are renovating and refurbishing the bathrooms through a programme of systematic maintenance), it should be mentioned that there is no accounting for taste. What one considers chic another may consider banal.
Upon confering with the Leisure Manager; I have been informed that the only piece of gym equipment that is not working is a treadmill, for which we are awaiting a replacement part. Furthermore, the entire Leisure facility is thoroughly cleaned on a daily basis.
The hotel is 235 years old, there is no identity issue and we welcome all guests, equally.

Firstly we couldn't belive the size of our room and en suite bathroom, it was huge, with the most stunning view of the village. As said by some others, the room was not perfect, it is an old building with all the probems that go along with that, condensation, damp, but nothing that put us off. The gardens are beautiful and it is such a lovely walk down to the village. The gym and pool are a bonus. We didn't eat in the resturant apart from breakfast, which was fine, a good selection, but we did have a drink in the bar which was quite expensive, two G & T's in the village, £7.40, in the hotel bar £11.00, but nothing will put us off of staying there again.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 109, on the corner of the castle, huge room, stunning view and very quiet

A fabulous stay with the family. The children thoroughly enjoyed it, which is always a bonus!! Adventure walks on the grounds with the most stunning views of the ocean and St Ives bay. Arguably THE best view in the whole of the uk, you really have to see it to believe it. The weather is great compared to most of the uk, but when it dipped slightly the boys entertained themselves in the indoor activity room. I played golf while my lady wife indulged in some spa facials. And yes there are a couple of creaky floor boards and some grand but old fashioned furnishings.... But what do you expect from a castle?! It's cosy, the staff are delightful and the food is very very good!!

Tregenna Castle started life in 1774 so yes the building is old and you won't find it perfectly plastered or perfectly maintained in every way - so don't expect it! But you will find a beautiful building with well furnished and very large spacious rooms. The biggest test to me are the showers and pillows - the shower was wonderfully hot and fast and the pillows bouncy and like new - I slept very well!

The staff are what makes this hotel special - I could find no fault - from the wonderfully jovial gatesman to the youngest staff member in the restaurant - everyone put the guest first and they were incredibly helpful in everyway.

Thank you very much for a lovely 2 night much needed getaway!

Room Tip: We were in room 5 with a sea view - lovely spacious room but being on the ground floor and with no n...

This was visit number 4 to Tregenna Castle and as always we had a fantastic time. We stayed in a self-catering apartment and I have to say we couldn't fault the accomodation and facilities. Our 7 year old daughter loved the Castle Kids club, which was a relief because keeping one child entertained whilst on holiday in the winter months can be tricky!

The castle is situated high-up above the bay of St Ives, which makes the views from around the grounds breath taking. It's a very pleasant walk through the castle gardens and down into St Ives, but be prepared for a breath taking walk back should you return the same way (walking down is definitely easier than walking back up, but there are benches to sit on to get your breath back :-).

Personally I find the castle very charming. Yes it's a little creaky here and there, but for me it's all part of its character. Overall service, facilities, food, etc are spot on and it's nice to see some of the same faces (staff wise) visit after visit. Looking forward to staying with you again in August - hopefully get to use the heated outdoor pool!
