Tregenna Castle Resort
Ranked #10 of 20 Hotels in St Ives
Reviewed 31 May 2014

A wonderful peaceful setting with amazing views over St.Ives Bay and the Harbour. The gardens are very well presented and the interior looks much better than our last visit about 5 years ago, still a little old fashioned, but it looks like it has had a good refreshing paint and damp issues have been resolved. Parking facilities are also great.

Tregenna Castle hotel has all the physical qualities required to make it a stunning hotel, unfortunately the quality level of staff is not up to the standards that this historic building deserves. The general feeling from the staff is that they are their to do a job, get paid and go home and not look after the hospitality and well being of it's guests. There was no welcoming acknowledgement from staff when we arrived, service in the bar was rushed and almost rude. Staff were happy to barge customers out of the way in the restaurant - a general lack of manners. The food severed in the restaurant was okay, but overpriced for the quality. A mediocre steak was more than £22!!

We stayed in Tregenna hotel for a wedding. The quality of the wedding food was awful, and very similar to school dinner standard. Food overcooked, Vegetables not seasoned, very slow and clumsy service. Staff appeared unhappy and inconsiderate towards guests.

Overall a lovely place, but staff require better hospitality training and motivation. A new executive chef to improve food standards is a must!

Thank you for your positive comments on the current refurbishment and renovation work being done around the resort.

It would however seem that we failed to meet your expectations in some other areas of our resort and for that we apologise. Our staff are regularly praised very highly for their friendliness and positive attitudes, even during busy periods, and other guest reviews are testament to that.

We hold many weddings at our resort and our experienced management team actively seeks feedback from brides & grooms and their guests during the day of the wedding to ensure everything is run to their satisfaction. Unfortunately we do not know which wedding you attended as we held a wedding every day last week and we did not receive any negative comments all week.

Your comments have however been passed onto the appropriate managers.

We booked a short break (5 days) in one of the self-catering apartments (of which there are many - and cottages!) in the Scandanavian-style 'lodge' building called Plen an Dinas. This was a split level apartment (ours was called Forest) - downstairs the hall had a shower room off it and led to an open plan kitchen/dining area/living area with doors out on to a balcony with a picnic table overlooking the hotel's golf course. Rising out of the large open plan area are stairs to a mezzanine level with a large bedroom and another shower room. The apartment could sleep 4 as the settee in the living area could be made into a pull-out double bed - but I wouldn't recommend this - unless you were all very good friends!
The decor is rather spartan throughout (for example, there are hard laminate floors on both levels and very little in the way of soft furnishing) - so it's not at all luxurious - but it's very clean and well appointed and everything works (hurrah!). The huge bed upstairs was very comfortable and we were particularly impressed by the upstairs shower (we didn't use the downstairs one so can't comment on that) which was great - a good drenching and lots of hot water.
A nice touch is that you can order take aways (we didn't - but we liked the idea!) from the hotel restaurant which you can pop over and collect. The setting of the whole place is great with acres of golf course, formal gardens, woodland and sea views.
We felt that the service from the hotel on booking and arrival was excellent - friendly, welcoming and helpful, even though they were all extremely busy with weddings that weekend.
We would have liked to have received a list of what's available in the apartment on booking as that would have enabled us to plan better - for example, there were no oven gloves or wooden spoons- but there was a cafetiere!
Very good V for M and availability permitting they do take bookings for part weeks which is fantastic and rather unusual! Very enjoyable - we will go back.

I am really pleased to read that you enjoyed your recent stay in our Scandinavian style lodge and for posting a review.

I am particular pleased that all our staff remained helpful and friendly, even during busy periods.

Reception staff are available 24 hours, so if you find yourselves needing anything during your next stay there should always be someone available to assist.

Booked while driving to St Ives, so very last minute. We weren't expecting too much, but were pleasantly surprised when we drove up to this imposing "castle".

It's all rather old fashioned inside, but is a proper hotel and we had booked one of the cheaper rooms for two nights. Imagine our surprise when we were allocated a huge room with a sea view and a newly fitted en-suite bathroom - equally huge!

Flat screen tv worked well and there were tea and coffee making facilites in the room. Only thing I would criticise slightly is the bed. It was definitely past its best, with absolutely no spring left in it. Nevertheless we both slept well.

Breakfast was buffet style, which will never be as good as one that is cooked to order. However, it was pretty good apart from the fact that the "fresh" fruit salad was actually tinned! The dining room is bit dingy, but just needs a bit more light to brighten it up.

There is also a beauty parlour, where a very sweet girl did my eyebrows and eyelashes for me! How handy!

You can walk down to the town through the beautiful gardens. It's a bit hard work on the way back up, but do-able if you are feeling fit!

Would definitely stay here again if in the area.

Room Tip: Would definitely recommend a sea view. The Tregenna is on the top of the hill overlooking St Ives a...

We recently stayed here for 4 nights and it was very enjoyable. The room was excellent {west wing sea view}, comfortable, very clean and an excellent size with really wonderful views of St. Ives 'island' and Godrevy Lighthouse. Large windows enabled us to sit in our settee looking out at the view and there were 2 other comfy chairs in the room; bed {which could be double or twin} also very comfortable and it was so quiet. Plenty of staff, who all seemed friendly and helpful.
I would agree with a previous review that the car park would benefit from better signs - arriving tired and not knowing the layout, we were left wondering just where we would be able to park {quite a number of reserved places, maybe for self catering} and how far we would have to carry our luggage. A map and better directions at the security barrier would help, maybe also the facilty to unload and have help with luggage at the main entrance.
The dinner menu was very varied and it was nice to be able to choose more basic food, like sausage and mash {recommended} or fish and chips. However, fish and chips was served piled on a board, which was actually cracked and was quite inadequate - suggest you ask for a plate! Delicious burger also came served in this way. We were a little disappointed that the menu did not change at all in the 4 nights we were there, even the puddings stayed the same. As I cannot eat fish, the choice became a little restricted and some change would have been welcome.
Breakfast was very good and plenty of choice, although we did not see the fruit selection on the first morning. As coffee drinkers, we would have preferred cafetieres of coffee at our table, especially for decaffeinated coffee, but these were not available.
I have mentioned a few small possible improvements, but they are very small matters and overall we really enjoyed our visit. We would certainly stay here again and recommend it very highly.

Room was great we love the old features. The area and grounds were lovely. The food was delicious. The only thing I would like to see improved is the indoor pool, its to small for such a large complex. Cannot fault it otherwise

Thank you for your kind review. Our team of gardeners work extremely hard to maintain the vast grounds of the resort, and I will pass your comments to them. We very much hope to see you at Tregenna castle resort again very soon.

What a tired and shabby place. The place was clearly renovated in the 60s and nothing has happened since, down to the beds. Lovely grounds, great pool area but inside was so poor. It was like Faulty Towers. Shame as it's in such a lovely setting.

Room Tip: Don't go!

Of course you are entitled to, and we welcome, your opinion. But do you honestly expect potential guests and readers of your review, to believe that we have had no renovations or refurbishments since the 1960's? And that we even have the same beds? I suppose they can read the other reviews and they can decide.
