Have just spent a week in self catering cottage for 6. Immaculate and gorgeous, did not want to leave!! Wish I could stay forever....Lovely helpful and friendly staff. Attentive self catering staff who took care of any requirements. Cant believe anyone could be so horrid as to say such negative and nasty comments....we have travelled widely and this place is superior in every way to other hotels and locations in the uk. Very highly recommended and excellent value.

We booked the castle for a 40th Birthday and were travelling quite a long way. When we read the reviews we nearly died. My friend phoned the castle and told the lady on reception our concerns, she immediately upgraded us and said the reviews were unfair. We were still very apprehensive but went anyway. We were more than pleasantly surprised. The castle and grounds are stunning, the (very) large reception area was bright, clean and airy, with lots of leather chesterfield sofas. Our rooms were very nice, all decorated, clean and again bright and airy. All the staff could not do enough for us, from reception to bar and restaurant, and the food (we ate in both restaurants) was fab. Our showers were fine (ok, not a fabulous power shower) but certainly more than adequate. Our rooms were cleaned and towels changed each day. Whether or not we were just lucky having refurbished rooms, but our whole stay was absolutely lovely. We have all stayed in good hotels before so are used to nice places and I would say that Treganna Castle was not disappointing at all. And to top it all the weather was fabulous and St Ives itself is gorgeous. Give this hotel a chance and you may well be very pleasantly surprised like we were. My only "complaint" would be that the bed was only a normal double instead of a king size like we are used to at home, but it was a small thing and didn't spoil our stay.

In one word: rubbish.
We got a half price deal for two nights and felt like we'd been conned - god knows how the people who pay full price feel. When i booked i was told we were in a room above the conference room, but there were no events taking place while we were. In fact, there was a wedding both nights we were there, so we had loud music AND cigarette smoke coming into our room. Great.
The room was clean, but horribly outdated. 2 star tops. The bathroom was even worse. We felt like we were on the show 'The Royal' - it was literally like a hospital bathroom from the 1950s. It was like being back at school. Oh, and the loo didn't flush. Nice.
Breakfast pretty appalling. Wedding guests, even those who haven't stayed at the hotel, take priority over paying hotel guests. we had to sit in a 'waiting room' with 30 other hungry guests for our food. Not worth the wait.
All in all, this place put a dampener on what was otherwise a lovely holiday. Don't think what you see on their website is what you'll get. You won't!

Disappointed with the room, which we had paid to upgrade, but it was quite average. We were looking forward to the Spa Treatments (we stayed Friday and Saturday night) but there were not any appointments. But then they were closed Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. Staff on reception not very helpful and not forthcoming with much information. Could have been a much better stay if staff were more friendly, and the spa treatments had been available.Staff told us that the spa treatments were independant from the hotel. So we felt they were not really an option as we were led to believe on the website. We therefore decided that we did not want to spend our time in the hotel as we had intended. Parking was also a problem not enough spaces. Will not be going back.

An expensive hotel if you do what we did, and booked the best room in the West Wing. Without the offer that we managed to get, these rooms come in at £165 per night/ per room and simply are not worth it.

The grounds are lovely but that's about it ....

1. No guaranteed parking ... it's a fight for a space affair, even if you have paid top price!
2. Overworked receptionist
3. Grotty lift that doesn't inspire confidence
4. Grotty decor in the corridors
5. Average rooms, nice view, but distinctly average rooms
6. Rubbish bathrooms. Dated and useless showers. Don't expect a power shower!
7. Breakfast served 08:00 to 09:30 ... why not later? I thought I was on holiday and not in the army!
8. Be prepared to queue for breakfast .... yes .... you read correctly! Queue for breakfast when you have paid £165 a night!!!
9. Very, very average breakfast. Subjected to dirty cutlery, cups, plates and coffee jugs.
10. Cleaning staff took the towels that we had placed in the bath to be changed, folded them up and popped them back on the towel rail - unacceptable.
11. Complimentary water in the rooms, but only once! - how tight is that!

In short, I really wouldn't waste my money if I were you. This is a second rate hotel, with ideas above it's station. It sells on the basis of grounds and location, which are good - true, but that doesn't make up for all of the other inadequacies. Don't get me wrong ... I can forgive many things for a pretty view, but not this many and at this price.

If you are considering staying here - DON'T - seriously ... find somewhere else!

The hotel is in an excellent location, for St Ives, with beautiful grounds but, this is where the positives end! We stayed for 2 nights and the room was very poor with an outdated bathroom and no insulation between the rooms - we could hear everything in the neighbouring room - and more importantly, the room bore absolutely no resemblance to the images on the website that I had expected on arrival. We were staying in room 64 which had an outdated waste disposal system which growled loudly when even the taps were run. On complaining about the room we were offered an equally outdated box room on the second floor - apparently the hotel was fully booked so, they could do nothing more! On speaking to one of the housekeepers it transpired that a lot of guests had complained about room 64 but, clearly the hotel choose to do nothing to resolve the issues! Breakfast was appalling - the food was cold and very poorly presented - so, we ended up finding a cafe in St Ives on our second morning.

Didn't rate this hotel at all. The grounds are beautiful and the location is good, however, the hotel itself is not how it is represented on their website. The rooms need upgrading, the TVs are very old with bad pictures, the shower only had hot water for two days and when it did it the water pressure was so weak it was difficult to use - the whole place just needs money spending on it! The restaurant and bar staff are very friendly. The swimming pool and sauna are grubby and need a good scrub, in fact after using it once I didn't return. The gym was ok. The restaurant did not have much choice of food, it was a carvery every night with the only other choice normally being a vegetarian pasta dish or similar. A friend stayed in one of the cottages on the site which was far better then the rooms so if you are staying here I would recommend checking out the cottages.
