On arriving at the Porthminster we were greeted with a building site and asked by a friendly concierge to leave our keys with him who parked our car in the garage across the road, we then went to check in.

On checking in we were given our keys and told where our room was ... I asked what time breakfast was and the lady apologised for not explaining this to me, admittedly she had been on annual leave for 2 days so an easy mistake to make!!

First impression of the hotel decor and the room were not great, particularly for the price paid, however, the sea view was spectacular and at least the room was clean. The next dissapointment came when checking our welcome letter which explained that the new Spa (which I had been reliably informed would be open and was the reason for me choosing this hotel over others in St Ives) was closed for maintenance and would be open the next day.

The first positive of the hotel was the call recieved by the hotel manager shortly after checking in, to welcome us to the hotel and to invite us for a complimentary drink in the bar, an offer we didn't manage to take up but a nice touch nonetheless.

The next morning we awoke for a swim at the Spa that we had been informed would be open the next day ... only to find the spa still not open (Very Dissapointing) and so went to breakfast which is where the stay started to turn positive, a lovely spread, good cooked food and good service.

After a day in the beutiful town of St Ives we returned to find the spa finally open and took the opportunity to use the facilities before the end of our stay ... the spa is very modern and relaxing and whilst not finished very impressive.

Having booked a table at the restaraunt, we sat in the bar for a drink and found the bar staff quite pleasant to talk to.However a comment made to a passing collegue that the hotel was something out of `Faulty Towers` we found this to be amusing yet inappropriate as we were guests!

The food and wine at the restaraunt was at a very good standard and the sevice was good.

Overall we had a pleasant stay at the Porthminster and whilst we will definitely return to St Ives, we will not be paying the prices stated to stay at the Porthminster again.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review.

I understand that, due to the adjacent building works, the initial aesthetic would have raised some questions, but I am delighted that your perseverance was rewarded. Thank you for your kind words for our Spa, food and service. Regarding the Spa, I am sorry that we had to close it for that period of time, it was wholly unavoidable and absolutely essential.

I am very sorry for the comments you heard - this is obviously far from what we wish to portray as our standard and certainly not what we want our team to feel. I will address this accordingly.

Given that the various construction projects should be completed, certainly within 12 months, I very much hope you might reconsider a return visit - please do contact me personally to assist you in this regard.

The hotel is difficult to find as under signed with the new name, but once there the staff were very helpful and the room although a little past its sell by date was commodious and clean. The restaurant looks on to the bay outstanding views and food .I suggest that you take the dinner bed and breakfast option you won’t be disappointed, and it represents such good value. The duty manager Des? an ex bus driver from Sheffield is a great asset to the hotel and a very good example of how successful a life change can be, suggested that we stayed an extra night, we did and although this required a room change it was handled well and the new room a 4 poster was a delight. Down side squeaky floor boards in all the hotels hall ways and over noisy jet tubs in adjacent rooms . Overall good value and will return to see what changes occur under the relatively new ownership. The ex accountant boss shows again how successful a life change can be if I were in the job market I would love to work for the group, all are so positive from the chambermaid to senior management. well done.

Dear Mr Loveday,
Thank you so much for your kind words. I have ensured Des has seen your comment and given him an appropriate pat on the back - I think he is very much like a duck in water! Once again, thank you for choosing us and rest assured the warmest of Cornish (and indeed Sheffield) welcomes awaits your return.

We stayed at the Harbour hotel on tuesday 30th august as part of our Honeymoon tour of cornwall. On arrival we were greeted by the Duty Manager (Des) who instantly made us feel welcome and made a big fuss of our daughter Mckenzie(which she loved). we were then shown to our room which had a fantastic sea view so we were delighted. The pool and jacuzzi had only just opened but we made good use of them in the afternoon. We only stayed one night but our stay was made even better by the fantastic meal in the Restaurant. We were sat by the window which had stunning sea views and all of the staff were fantastic , and our meal was superb !! After we had finished our meal we sat and relaxed with a drink in the lounge area. And enjoyed a lovely chat with Des who really cant be praised enough for the welcome and warmth he showed us ! He really is a great guy. We were a little reluctant to leave in the morning, but a fantastic breakfast set us up for our journey onwards.
I really cannot recommend this hotel enough, our stay was extremely enjoyable, so much so that we have booked for our 1st anniversary next August

We stayed 2 days at this hotel after spending 4 days at St Moritz hotel and spa hotel near Padstow We also spend alot of our time travelling spa hotels in England throughout the year. This hotel is in the process of being refurbished and you can see it's potentuals.
The gym is good, the spa at the hotel is very good open till 8pm, however, the staff turn off spa/sauna 7.30pm so you feel water and steam getting colder by the minute. The whole changing rooms are brand new however the floor is dirty covered in hairs and never seems to be cleaned
This hotel needs to maintain cleaniness in these areas to keep high it's standard as it is a good spa and great hotel

Food at hotel is good.

Thank you for posting your review and kind words of praise. Thank you also for bringing these important Spa issues to my attention - I have already appointed a full time cleaner for the Spa to address this and have also resolved the switch off times already.
Once again, thank you for your constructive and objective feedback, your points are well taken and greatly appreciated.
Look forward to seeing you again soon!

We stayed for 3 nights over the august bank holiday weekend. The location of the hotel is great amd the views are amazing. We paid extra for a room with a sea view which was great until you tried to open the window (room 108). We spoke to reception about the window and they asked if i would like a fan? No i would not - i eould just like to able to open the window and take in the sea air in a boiling hot room!! The service at breakfast is appalling - we waited 20 mins for someone to take our order, no one came so we had to ask. Then when 'alice' brought our breakfast, the cereal bowls were still on our table, she made no effort to move them, we were expected to move them.

Over priced, bad service and if you get handed room 108 key, ask to be moved!

Thank you for taking the time to post your review and may I immediately apologise for your disappointment. I am aware of the problems with the window in 108 and understand your obvious frustration - this entire sash has now been replaced. I am also aware of the service difficulties over that weekend - you are quite accurate and we did not provide the service that you had every right to expect.

I would be most grateful if you would contact me directly to allow me to arrange an appropriate gesture on our part for a return visit, so you can enjoy room 108 now it is in full working order or of course, you choice of any other sea view room.

Once again please accept my apologies for your understandable disappointment.

We stayed here on a last minute deal and paid £110 for a sea view room with dinner and breakfast included. We were pleased with this 'deal' but paying full price would have seemed expensive to us. Would stay again once the refurbishment has been completed and if we get a good rate.
