Owner description: The Penwith Gallery is the home of the Penwith Society of Arts in Cornwall. The gallery, formerly a pilchard packing factory, has a remarkable complex of buildings, including three public galleries, sculpture area and archive. This allows for a varied and interesting series of changing exhibitions throughout the year. The society was founded in 1949 by Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon, Bernard Leach, Sven Berlin and Wilhelmina Barns– Graham, amongst others. Later members have included Patrick Heron, Terry Frost and Henry Moore (honorary member). This association with so many progressive and influential artists has given the Penwith Society a unique place in British art history. Today the society continues to play a central role in the thriving and vibrant St. Ives art community, exhibiting contemporary art from Cornwall and beyond.

This is the place to go to see art at its best. Avoid the Tate. Penwith Gallery is stunning and FREE. Absolutely wonderful exhibition of art. Stunning at every turn. Spent ages in this gallery. Light and airy beautifully displayed items by Cornish artists. Would be so happy to own any of these pieces of art from traditional to modern. A must for all ages.

Don't waste your money going to The Tate - go to the close by Penwith Gallery instead - its free entry and amazing full of high quality local art pottery and sculptures. Staff highly approachable and most knowledgeable. My faith in art and St. Ives is restored.

There is a wonderful selection of paintings by local artists which will repay time spent in enjoying the display. A light, airy space with the pieces well mounted. Wish I'd stayed longer. Must go back.

Don't waste your money going to The Tate - go to The Penwith instead - free entry (but please support them by putting some money in the collection pot)
This is where you can find some quality work from lesser known and student artists. It is a smashing place and really is worth a visit

This is the only gallery I now find inspiring in St Ives. It is a wonderful space and it has an honest approach to it's artwork. There is always some good quality interesting pieces on display.
