St. Ives Holiday Village
Reviewed 13 April 2014

Our recent break was our third stay with John Fowler Holiday Park at St Ives, We enjoyed our previous stays and were able to put up with the dated decor of the chalets, However on this occasion I feel compelled to write a review to give people the opportunity to make an informed choice as to whether to waste their hard earned money at St Ives Holiday Village. The accommodation which we stayed in was a silver chalet, This is a laughable misuse of words, having stayed before we knew full well the accommodation would look like an ill cared for garden shed but were not prepared for the lingering smell of stale cigarette smoke and sweat that we were met by when opening the door to our "Silver Chalet". A quick trip to a supermarket to purchase some scented candles and deodorising spray was required and this helped to cover the lingering stench. On closing the door it was apparent that the privacy screen on the window of the door had been peeled back and was now cleverly repaired with the use of sellotape, This had the added advantage of sticking bugs/flies to the door making an added attraction to look at throughout the holiday. Cobwebs adorned the ceiling especially above the kitchen area and the cord for the light switch had, it appears, never been wiped and was now growing its own variety of organisms. Our accommodation catered for four people however there was a single fabric chair and a two seater leather effect sofa which was a minor annoyance as someone would have to sit on the floor or at the dining table. We used the parks indoor swimming pool on two occasions throughout our weeks stay, the first occasion on returning to the changing rooms to shower the showers were ice cold. The second occasion we were asked to leave the pool shortly after getting in as somebody had passed stool in the pool, Not the fault of the holiday park obviously, but were told to have a good shower by the pool staff, this was difficult as again the showers were freezing cold, after asking the pool attendant if there was any hot water to shower with the females were advised to shower in the male changing room which was again ice cold. Any chance of washing parasites off our children were reduced as showering them in ice cold water is a difficult feat. On the fifth night of the holiday we were unable to get much sleep as we were kept awake by a gnawing and scratching sound coming from within the bedroom wall. We then decided to leave prematurely as we did not want a repeat of the wood munching fest in our bedroom and also our daughter had started vomiting uncontrollably possibly due to the pool incident. Please when reading this do not confuse St Ives holiday village with St Ives itself which is just stunning. The beaches are beautiful and the quaint shops are delightful. We will definitely be visiting St Ives again just staying at alternative accommodation. Looking at the pictures of other reviews against the management pictures provided on this site shows a drastic contrast, we were astounded that the entertainment bar was, on a half term week, empty. At most we counted only seven tables used. The entertainment staff continued on as best they could and were very professional and exceptionally friendly. We have visited previously a while ago admittedly but our experience on this occasion has ensured we never stay in a John Fowler Holiday Park again.

Hello

I was amused by your comment about a complimentary holiday. Thankfully nowadays, poor reviews are few and far between and we have the satisfaction of knowing that last year well over 50,000 families enjoyed a John Fowler Holiday at our 14 holiday parks.

Nevertheless, occasionally we let a customer down and it is imperative that we make a full investigation into what went wrong for the benefit of future guests.

I shall be contacting you shortly and I feel sure that the matter will be settled to everyone’s satisfaction.

Lovely little park set in woodland, we didn't take the car so was a tad secluded at first. Don't get the train to Lelant Saltings go to St. Earth and get a taxi Apple cars were fab. The bus fare to and from St. Ives for 2 adults and 1 child was £11.25 but for £20.00 2 adults and all children can ride around all day perfect for exploring the surrounding areas and shopping at the local tesco in Carbis Bay the bus 17A is every 25 mins and the bus stop is right outside the shop. We had booked a bronze chalet but were upgraded to silver the chalet no. 281 was spotless, smelled fresh and clean and had everything you could need, the heating was on and the beds were all made up. Every single member of staff were lovely, the facilities were good and the nature trail is stunning the only grumble we had from my 12 year old was there was nowhere for him to play football! All in all we would definitely come back to this lovely well maintained holiday park.

We always have a lovely holiday here. We are still coming every year. The staff and accommodation are excellent. The grounds are kept in good condition . The chalets are clean and comfortable. We do not use the entertainment facilities very often. It was nice to see a real ale (Tribute) on sale. We have only one complaint about the state of roads which was bad with potholes.

Returned yesterday after a 4 night break( home after 3). Chose this park as a base(wasn't intended for a family holiday, and had no reason to use their facilities)as they allow dogs so we took ours and was as close to st ives as we could get at the last minute during the easter hols. We got a deal as we booked late, would never had paid the original for what we got. Ok, so we took the dog, doesn't mean we live like one..
Smelly, grimy, cob webs, very dated, slugs in bathroom, double bed? More a large single, we had to sleep in separate rooms. So,very little sleep and poor quality when we did. Would not recommend as a holiday for anyone. Kids would like it( very young kids) as they don't see what we do. Seemed to be things for them to do.
The silver bungalow 4 we had in my opinion needs a total makeover. No where to hang anything to get it dry. New kitchen facilities, a touch of paint would not fix it, which is what seems to happen, just cover it with paint?? Hate to think what a bronze was like. Other bungalows were having work done, however we believe these were privately owned. If you have some standards avoid the bungalows!!

We booked a short break as a belated honeymoon through the Daily Mail as we'd been unable to afford one at the time . It cost a very reasonable £43 for 4 nights & we arrived with a little trepidation as we'd unfortunately seen a couple of less than complimentary reviews, but for the amount we weren't expecting the Ritz!! Upon arrival, the very helpful staff who welcomed us also gave us a congratulatory bottle of wine with their compliments. Our chalet was very warm as the heaters had been put on for us & was lovely & clean. The beds had been made up for us so that was also a bonus!!. We decided to eat in the on site restaurant on the first & whilst the menu at first glance looked quite impressive we were informed that most of it was unavailable but we saw the funny side & ordered anyway as the staff were all so lovely. We went through for the entertainment afterwards to find that there was rather a long game of bingo taking place(we don't play bingo) followed by a quiz & then everything finished quite early. But it is still low season & there probably weren't enough people there to make it worthwhile staying open longer. We spent the next day exploring the local area & went off site in the evening for a meal(& it also involved finding a place showing the football for my husband!!) One of our heaters had decided to stop working that morning so we'd reported it to reception on our way out & by the time we returned, someone had been to look at it, been unable to get it working & left us another plug in heater so that we could remain warm & cosy!! On the last evening we went to the clubhouse late enough to miss the bingo & caught the conclusion of race night & the quiz which we managed to win so more wine to take back!! Felt sorry for the staff having so few people to entertain but they were looking forward to more people to entertain on the weekend after we left!! They were rehearsing some of their performances as we were leaving for the evening(we were the last ones standing!!) All in all a very pleasant experience & we will definitely be looking to go again!! Thank You to everyone for making us so welcome!!!

Room Tip: Try to stay close enough to the entertainment as some of it is quite a long walk if you have mobilit...

Hello Mandi

Thank you very much for leaving us such a fantastic review, we really appreciate it. Your comments have been passed to all departments.

The park does not deserve poor reviews and thankfully they are few and far between. We simply do not understand why some people choose to post them, when all the staff work really hard to make everyone feel welcome. However, we are all individuals and we can all have vastly different opinions on the same subject.

I was amused to read that your husband wanted to watch football on his honeymoon and that you appeared to be happy with that. That bodes well for a long and happy relationship.

I am delighted to hear that you had a great time. Our returning customers are very important to us and we look forward to welcoming you again very soon.
