“Good b&b - the little things matter though”
Reviewed 9 August 2013

This is a nice b&b in St Ives. The breakfasts are wonderful and are by far the best thing about the b&b. There's a lovely choice of fresh fruit, yogurts, cereals, full cooked breakfasts, croissants, toast and the staff will cook what you want. The sausages are a little heavy, but we just didn't have them again!

We stayed in room 5 which was pleasant, light and airy, but it's the little things that let it down for £100 a night. Things such as the bathroom - the door didn't shut without forcing it, the toilet seat was cracked all the way through (painful when you get up!!), the electric shower depended upon other guests in their room not being in the bathroom at the same time (with a one hour breakfast slot, that's quite likely they will be) otherwise the water varies from freezing to very hot. Also, you can hear next door slamming their shower door a lot.

The bed was firm, but comfortable and large and storage was good - a large cabinet and wardrobe. There is an issue with electric sockets - they are either in the wrong place, or there aren't enough of them.

Check in and out was easy, however, the car park is tiny. car parking is available at a rate of £2 per night (not sure why guests have to pay?!) and there are just enough spaces. Whilst we were there, there were two Range Rovers and a large Volvo 4x4 in the car park which meant that as we had the smallest car there (a medium sized family car), we had to squeeze it up against a bush and it was in the most narrow section of the car park risking it being scuffed by the oversized cars. The car was filthy by the end of the stay and we were disturbed twice during our 4 night stay to move it to the end. Although they asked in a polite way, it should be made clear on the webpage that the car park is not fit for purpose for a number of larger vehicles.

The location is a little out of the way, the hill is very steep to porthmeor, but only takes a couple of minutes if you're relatively fit. There is a bus service from outside the Tate for £1 per adult which takes you up the hill, and a taxi costs £3-4 from the centre (there's a taxi rank next to the cinema). Keep your eyes open for a turquoise sign from the main road, or the sat nav will take you down a narrow street to someone else's house!

Thank you for your comments and we are pleased you enjoyed your stay.

I felt that there were two threads that I needed to reply to.

Firstly, we work very hard at the little things because we know that they matter. There are many issues resolved quietly and effectively without guests even being aware. However, there are some issues that sometimes cannot be resolved quickly. For example, the toilet seat you mentioned had to be ordered (sometimes being in the far west has it's disadvantages) and it has now been fitted. The water pressure problem was a result of a failed water main - you might have been here when it completely burst last week and was replaced by South West water. The repair work itself meant we had a day of very low pressure - this might have caused the problem you raised.

Secondly, the car park is considered a "god send" by most guests. We have 8 spaces and 11 rooms. Therefore, we need to manage the car park to ensure that we do not have too many cars trying to use the spaces. Prior to online bookings this was relatively simple as we could control the allocation at the point of booking. However, the move to online bookings meant that we had to designate the parking space as a bookable "room" and the system required a charge to be levied. We reduced our room tariff to reflect the parking charge. The charge of £2.00 compares with £6.40 in the council car park (if they are available).

it is very unusual to have several large cars here simultaneously but I am pleased you recognised that the problem was managed effectively and politely.

We stayed at the Nook for three nights courtesy of Laterooms.com, and had an amazing time !
The room was on the ground floor next to the car park ( no issues at all!) was a large size, clean and well decorated. We found having a fridge in our room very useful with the hot weather, everything we seemed to need was catered for ( hair dryer, TV, extension leads, tea and coffee, fresh towels, etc). Breakfast was fab ! Too much choice of too much good food :)
Having a car parking space in St Ives is a massively luxury, and rarely moved the car as everything is in walking distance ( beaches 5 minutes, town 5 minutes, 10 on the way back because of the hill). The staff were very friendly and did leave us to enjoy our stay. They were also very helpful with regards to recommendations of things such as where to eat and drink and find the best things in town !
Cant wait to go back, won't be staying anywhere else :)

Room Tip: Room number 1 is lovely ! ( and the only room downstairs)

We stayed at The Nook for five nights in July and have been previously too. I would highly recommend this B&B. Very friendly welcome, a clean and comfortable room and a good choice for breakfast which is served in an efficient and friendly manner. The location is the only drawback, The Nook is a good ten minute hill walk from the centre of St Ives, keeps you fit though I suppose! We shall be returning next year...

We stayed at The Nook for three days and can highly recommend it. Beautiful and clean rooms (although our bathroom was very tiny), nice lounge and a lovely terrace to relax at. The Nook is a bit outside of the very centre of St Ives, which makes it nice and calm, still only about 10 minutes walking distance away.We would definitely stay there again!

I stayed for four nights end of June/beginning of July at the Nook. I really couldn't fault the Hotel/Bed and Breakfast. The bedroom was small but immaculately clean and all the furniture in the bedroom was new. The breakfast too was very good and all the staff went out of their way to be pleasant and helpful.

However, sadly for me it was just too far out of the way and up very steep hills. I would rather have had somewhere much nearer town and as I didn't take a car used taxis going back at the end of the day as the hills were really just too much! If you like really hilly walks and are fit or have your own transport, then this place shouldn't be a problem. I personally got fed up of taking taxis all the time, although they weren't expensive I guess I like somewhere I can pop in during the day and drop bags off etc. etc. and this just wasn't the case. Apart from the location I couldn't fault this hotel or bed and breakfast as the case may be.

Room Tip: I doubt there is a bad room in this place as it was exceedingly quiet in the night.

Choosing a B&B in St Ives was quite tricky as there's over 100! I'm not entirely sure what prompted us to pick The Nook but it turned out to be a good choice. We were warmly welcomed and offered tea & coffee which we had on the decking outside. The location is good (if you don't mind a bit of a hill) which was fine for us, overall a really nice stay.

I stayed for two nights at The Nook and I couldn't have asked for anything more. The rooms were so comfortable and the breakfasts....! Gorgeous!! The sausages, local to St. Ives, were to die for! The location was perfect for me - Tate Modern side of town and just up the hill from Porthmeor beach, yet only 5mins away from the main shopping street Fore Street. This was such a wonderful find and I will certainly be staying here again.

Thank you to all the friendly staff, especially Tamsin, who made me feel so welcome.
