“Super small hotel really lovely people excellent breakfast”
Reviewed 20 August 2013 via mobile

We have just spent 4 nights here and wanted to give Martin and Margaret 5 stars. This is a comfortable clean well run small hotel run by exceptionally hard working people. It isnt a corporate 4 star bland chain hotel with white linen and magazine finishes if you want that then stay somewhere else! We found this hotel a delight and enjoyed leaving the car and using the train into St Ives. Would happily recommend this hotel.

We spent 4 days at the Bortholan and our opinion is totally positive. Our room was very nice, not very big to be sincere, but very comfy anyway. It also had such a lovely view over Carbis bay and it was a real pleasure to enjoy it every morning at the wake up.
The breakfast provided was really good too: a good quality full English breakfast. Well done!
The buffet was very essential but definitely acceptable though.
The owner is a very kind person.
The Bortholan's location is very good because you can walk to St.Ives (it takes 20 minutes) or walk to the train stop (a 3 minute stroll from the hotel) to come and go from the village or, if you don't fancy walking at all, you can drive to St.Ives car park getting there in 10 minutes time.
The hotel provides a private car park.
We recommend the Bortholan: good value for money (also bearing in mind you're in Cornwall) in our opinion.

We had a lovely week at the Borthalan Hotel,Carbis Bay. The breakfast was excellent ,the rooms lovely and clean, ten minutes walk from a really nice beach. Martin and Margaret were really friendly and couldn't do enough for you. Thanks for a lovely stay Lynne & Dave.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room.

For the 2 of us, it worked out as £530 - that's 6 nights for 2 people including a good cooked breakfast... which is not expensive; considering that the Travel Lodge will set you back at least £75 a night.

The bed was very comfortable and from the window, I could see the sea... my only complaint would be that in the uppermost rooms, the wi-fi signal is very poor.

Confused by some of the reviews on here - Not entirely sure what they expected from a B&B... which is more what this place is. We didn't spend a lot of time in the place beyond bed and breakfast... but who the hell goes on holiday and spends all their time in the hotel?

We had high expectations as a result of reading the TripAdvisor reviews of Martin & Margaret's B&B. Whilst booking the trip they were really pleasant and we were really looking forward to the trip.

When we got there we were very disappointed. The gardens have not been cared for in seemingly years (they are overgrown and the seating arrangements look like they are from a scrap-dealers). Martin seemed a little 'miffed' when we got there and when I joked about having a lovely building and how I'd like to buy it he said 'well you can have it if you want, we have a restaurant in town and don't want this place any more.'

It couldn't have been closer to the truth. The room had raw-plug holes where previous curtains had been hung, the decor was very poor, it was stuck in the 70s and the 'en-suite' was no bigger than a wardrobe. Seriously. The sink was in the bedroom and the 'en-suite' was a toilet in a cupboard no bigger than a wardrobe.

The breakfasts were ok but Martin's grumpiness frankly was tedious. We couldn't find any reasonably priced alternatives (believe me we tried) so we had to put up with it for the week; thankfully we had friends in a lovely apartment up the road and they let us stay there for most of our holiday.

A real shame that the place has been left to go so downhill. We have no idea who left such positive reviews to be fair as they really are not a true reflection of this hotel from our experience.

Our room was the best they had! cramped, dirty, out of date! On suite is a cupboard in the corner!!! The grounds were overgrown and looked awful. The lock to our room did not work! Everything about this guest house sent us into depression. It is no hotel!! We booked two nights and did not stay one, it was that bad. We were told we would only be charged for one night..on arrival home they had charged us for two!!! We agree with others on here it is a awful place! The owner said he could not understand why it was slow business yet the reason we went there was because everywhere else was booked out!!!! Buy a tent, it will be better.

The hotel is clean and bright and welcoming, the owners are friendly and very helpful. Our room was bright, clean and tidy with a good view of Carbis Bay. Breakfast was very tasty and defiantly plenty of it. The hotel has its own on site parking.
The hotel is a short walk from the train station, where there are trains at least hourly into St. Ives - the journey takes only a couple of minutes and is only £2 return. If you're feeling a bit more energetic you can walk along the coast to St Ives - it's definitely worth doing at least once it has some amazing views.
I would recommend this B&B to anyone wanting a good place to stay away from the bustle of the main town. Although it may not be suitable for those with walking issues or those wanting to be in the center of all the action.
One point I would say is that we stayed in room 7 at the top, this room/bathroom has lots of side beams so if you are tall this could cause a few problems.
