We have just returned from our best holiday and hotel ever. WOW. We went with WA Shearings, we were amazed on how much the Hotel had improved since we were there last in 2006.

The outside was amazing, very inviting with Cafe totally refurbished to such a high quality and standard, we ate in the Hotels Cafe (The View) on the Wednesday of our holiday and we had Fresh local caught crab baguettes YUMMY and Cappachinos, SUPERB, right down to the salad garnish and freshly cooked chips side order.

Back to the hotel we were greated after a long 12 hour journey with open arms a smile and friendliness.that was more like coming home than a hotel. Our room was a standard room, it was clean confortable and had everything you needed for a good nights sleep, we prefer duvets, but the blankets didn't hinder our sleep at all. We slept like logs. The shower room and toilet was clean well equipped toiletries towels etc,and all in working order, Our room was cleaned very well every day, my nightie was even folded and put under my pillow! attention to detail was brilliant and everything was taken care of topped up and sorted. Notes that were left were read and things sorted.

The food was amazing, words can not describe how good it all was, the fish and vegetarian food was out of this world! as we do not eat meat. Our favourite was the salmon, cooked to perfection, with the best crushed potatoes I've ever eaten. The side vegetables were cooked just right, not too soft not too hard, The salads deliscious fresh and crisp, Couldn't fault any of it, the starters, were gorgeous, My favourite was the samosas, onion bhaji and pakora with tamarind sauce WOW really authentic and spicy. The afters were very indulgent and moorish, with my favourite being the pear and ginger sponge with custard. My partner was blown away by the cheese and biscuits from the supplement part of menu, the extra cost was well well worth it and the cheese was quality through and through with the brie just ripe for eating. I too had chosen from the supplement part of the menu and enjoyed thoroughly the Tempura prawns with chilli sauce and the Breaded Camenbert bites with cranberry dipping sauce. So beautifully cooked prepared and served.

I really loved the way they had decorated the Hotel with the carpet with the castle mapped on it to the nautical ship theme for the walls and ceilings with sails, it truly was magical and done to a very high standard.

The entertainment on our last night was great with a female singer called Nikki, she sang Bette Midler and it sent goosebumps all over us she was truly brilliant. As for the other nights our Itinary was so packed full, after being out all day exploring with a belly full of gorgeous food wine and cocktails it was hard to stay awake, as it was the most relaxing and confortable Hotel we have stayed at. Definetly be back, but need to stay for more than 4 nights though, as it just wasnt long enough.

Virag and Zsophia were our waitresses and they were amazing! very friendly, service with a smile every time and service that was so quick. They really bent over backwards to please you and take care of you. On our last night we had a waiter he too was also very friendly.

The Front of house staff were also fantastic with booking you in, showing you a menu before you were seated and then they would show you to your table.Jean-Pierre especially great with his proffesional manner of a problem, that was immediatly sorted. He greated us all with a smile, that was infectious and a friendlyness which is hard to match anywere we have stayed before. AMAZING A TRULY UNFORGETABLE HOLIDAY/HOTEL

We've just returned from a weekend break at the Ship & Castle and having read previous reviews it lived up to everything I had been expecting. I had paid the premium to ensure a superior room and found it to be a charming room with a lovely view out over the harbour, we had beautiful weather and so we were able to take full advantage of the balcony. The room was obviously recently refurbished but the carpet was quite badly stained, perhaps this is something that will be seen to over the winter months. The bathroom was clean and tidy with the usual complimentary items and our refreshment tray was fully re-stocked each day.
The public areas were very welcoming, as were all of the staff, particularly Jean-Pierre. The only aspect I was not happy with was having to wait to be shown to a different table for each meal. I appreciate there was also a coach party at the hotel and this seemed to put extra pressure on the waiting staff but it would have been nice to have known that we would have the same table and waiter at each meal. The food was very good with a varied choice each evening but the waiting time between each course was sometimes a little excessive, at breakfast on our last morning we waited 20 minutes before our waiter took our order and then another 15 minutes before we were served. I would certainly recommend this hotel to others and will probably return some time next year.

Room Tip: It's definitely worth paying the superior room supplement. I spoke to some guests who had a sta...

We have just returned from a visit To St Mawes ,we had a fabulous itinerary and super weather .
We had not visited this hotel for 4 yrs and were dismayed at how much the accommodation
had gone downhill along with the entertainment . Our room was very clean thanks to " Dan"
our cleaner who did his best with second rate furnishings.
The dining rooms , thanks to Jean-Pierre ( restaurant manager ) and his deputy Tammy ,
really made our stay worthwhile .They and their staff were always smiling, obliging ,and
tried hard to cover for the rather long wait in between courses arriving from the kitchen.
We came to the conclusion that the hotel was suffering from acute staff shortages ;and without the hard work of our mainly Hungarian & Bosnia bar & restaurant staff this hotel
would have ground to a halt !!
It was only being greeted morning and evening by the elegant Jean-Pierre that smoothed
the wait for meals and took your mind off the shortcoming of this hotel , which had been in the past an old world inn with chatacter and great evening entertainment

Room Tip: A room on the front

We have recently returned from a 7 day drive yourself holiday. What a beautiful spot St.Mawes is, we enjoyed the hotel, public rooms had been modernised room 126 was nicely decorated with a side view of the sea. Friendly staff in restaurant, the only ones we saw, but they are overworked and unable to clear tables quickly enough for the waiting holidaymakers, which created a lot of anger and grumbling in the queues which formed at dinner!! Very clean and were lucky with the weather, tip - book an early dinner and don't be late for breakfast or else your eggs will be like fried concrete!!!
Would still visit again as I love Cornwall.

Had a great holiday – hotel in a lovely quiet spot, but could do with decorating in bedrooms. Wallpaper coming off with damp patches in our room.

Food good, friendly staff but they are overworked with not enough staff to manage. Restaurant Manager nice – but unusually you had to book your table each night and state what time you wish as there wasn’t enough tables for everyone at once – and if you didn’t book promptly, the time you would want would get booked up which meant you would therefore have to go later!

Overall a nice hotel but needs decorating and more restaurant staff because at times you also waited a long time to get served!!!

Dear Guest,

Once again thank you for your comments and please do not let a previous visit put you off from returning to us, we have spent a considerable sum on the hotel in recent months to include refurbishing public areas and the cafe. We have recently returned from a 7 day Shearings gardens of cornwall holiday. Excellent itinerary, shame about the Hotel. we set off to our room wending our way along corridors with peeling wallpaper, dingy lighting and few direction signs to reach room 136. Upon opening the door, we were greeted by more peeling wallpaper, curtains that would not fully close, and a bathroom with shelf room for two toothbrushes and paste. The shower curtain had seen better and less mouldy days. Our next mistake was to turn on the bedroom light, whose faint illumination cast a revealing shadow over the stained carpet and damaged paint. With British stoicism we descended for dinner to be met with scenes of apparent chaos, supported by an attractive dining room. Our meal left something to be desired,(was there a fish and chip shop in St.Mawes?).Jean Pierre and his catering team were thereafter quite exceptional in the quality of food and service. Our next mistake was to return to the room, to find that the W.C would fill, on flushing but would not empty. The staff response was for us to use a bathroom in an unserviced room at the far end of the hotel. The following day, upon returning to the hotel we ha d been transferred to another slightly less dingy room. The curtains closed. But due to the smell of mould or sewage within the room, we had to leave both windows ajar. This shower was a cubicle with significant mould pervading the tiles and ceiling.
This Hotel is held together by the quality of the front of house and Kitchen staff. Pierre and his team, performing feats of magic under strenuous circumstances. I believe that given the correct impetus, and massive qualitative improvements in room standards this Hotel would be worth a revisit as it enjoys an enviable position within a most attractive area. In its present condition however I feel I would stay elsewhere.
In conclusion, was the holiday enjoyable? Yes it was, but please, Shearings, do something to help that Hotel

Dear Robert H,

Thank You for the time you have taken to write about your recent trip, it is invaluable to hear from our guests even if the feedback is not always positive. I have read your review and will be inspecting all of our rooms in the coming weeks to assess what requires attention over the next few months. I am pleased the team managed to move you on the second day to a better room, but of course that doesn't excuse the issues you mention. We have many customers who will say this is the best hotel in the company as you will see from other reviews, and I would hate for one bad experience to stop you visiting us again. Please do consider joining us again soon as I am sure with the change of itinerary for next year there will be new and exciting day trips to cater for your taste.
