We have just come back from 4 nights at the Ship and Castle and had a very enjoyable stay. The hotel is in a perfect location, right by the sea, and the hotel was well kept and the room of a standard you would expect for a 3 star. The bed was comfy and the room was clean, warm and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful and there was good entertainment on two of the nights we were there. Food was very good, there was plenty of it and it was well presented - breakfast was particularly enjoyable. We really enjoyed our stay and will certainly visit again.

Room Tip: Some residents said there was noise on the Thursday night, but we had a room at the back which was nice and quiet.

We chose this hotel because the food was so good at the Imperial in Exmouth last year that we thought this would be representative across the Coast and Country group. It was not. The vegetables were frozen, the scrambled egg was dried and grey, while the soup was the same stock with different things floating in it each day. How can Shearings (who, as we found on arrival, actually own Coast and Country) allow such varying standards that one never knows what to expect?

Food apart, the rooms were small, as one would expect for this type of hotel, but well equipped, kept clean and, apart from the windows, in good order, though I suspect the mattresses were the originals from when the hotel was built. The staff were friendly, helpful and generally understood English. You cannot beat the view from the hotel (and seaview rooms are a must here). There is no car park but a fairly large public car park is nearby. The hotel has no parking permits available.

Our other major downer concerned the resort itself. For about 100 metres either side of the hotel there are a few shops, then nothing (although the castle, a little way beyond, is worth visiting). There are two pubs nearby which serve decent ale but at lunchtimes and for most of the evening their tables are laid for dinner and drinkers are discouraged. Best bet is the social club in the car park which visitors can use and which again has good beer. The terrace of the rather up-itself Idle Rocks Hotel is nice for cocktails if the concierge thinks you are the right type of person to be allowed in just to drink.

Our tip would be that unless you have a specific reason for coming here, to stay in Falmouth instead where there is more to do, and to visit St Mawes by ferry for a couple of hours.

Room Tip: We did not select a Superior room but at least some of them have large balconies. You take a chance with the weather but if it is good then they appear to be worth the extra money.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We are sorry that we did not meet your expectations. St Mawes is a beautiful quiet fishing village. It is free from any hustle and bustle of town or city life and why people do visit regularly. We do not have car parking at the hotel but the main council car park is only a 2 to 3 min walk from the hotel.

Regards Jackie

The hotel is in a lovely position in a very quiet harbour, although the downstairs of the hotel has obviously been redecorated in a modern way, not all the rooms have. We were put into room 114 which had a big gap in the French doors letting in a draft and the room looked a bit tired. Trying to get warm decided to have a hot shower but unfortunately the shower adjustments needs work on it and I could only get warm water which then turned cold. We were moved to room 120 which is a superior room which was very nice, but the corridor going to it was very disappointing, with damp on walls and plaster peeling off not what you expect on the way to a superior room. The whole hotel was cold which did not help the ambiance of the place. It should have little things like candles in the evening in the lounge because it is very dark and uninviting. The food was very average as well. We have stayed in several Coast and Country hotels and have found this one very disappointing. I would like to ask why, if the hotel was half empty they put you into a substandard room when they could put some people into the superior rooms, guests would then say what a lovely surprise upgrading us I might come again if that is the service I get, it does not take much working out.

Room Tip: You would do better to pay more for superior rooms. WE upgraded to sea view and rooms 114 and 112 were freezing and had not been upgraded yet.

Have just returned from a 4 night stay at the Ship and Castle. Staff were lovely, friendly and helpful. Food was good and plentiful, easily lasted from breakfast to dinner. We were disappointed that there were no local ales at the bar, so had to find a pub in the evenings that did serve them. Only complaint was with the bed, most uncomfortable. Did mention this to receptionist after first night, but all they did was put more padding under sheet. Didn't make much difference. When we had a word with manager, before we left, he said that he would look into it. They have been replacing beds in the past year, so hopefully this one will get done this year. Overall, we had a lovely, relaxing break and we would return to the hotel as it was very good value.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a new bed!

Thank you for taking the time to comment. We have an ongoing plan in place for the refurbishment in some areas. We do have an on-going programme to change some of the beds and hope this reassures you.
All your kind comments will be passed on to the staff and we all look forward to your return.
It’s good for all the staff to have their hard work and services recognized by our guests.

Jackie

My wife and I have just spent 4 nights at the Ship and Castle. The welcome was warm and throughout our stay the staff were both friendly and efficient. The standard of catering was excellent and the restaurant staff were really helpful. We had a room overlooking the harbour and this was an added bonus.
We travelled with Shearings and the excursions, both included and optional, were excellent. The driver/guide (Tony) was pleasant, knowledgeable, and helpful. He really made the holiday special for us.
For a short break I would recommend the Ship and Castle to anyone.

Room Tip: It is worth paying a bit extra to get a room with a sea view.
