Had to back up the approach road to King Harry Ferry for quite a long way due to a lorry taking up all the road, shouldn’t be allowed on this ferry! Due to this we missed the ferry and had a long wait. Purpose of this crossing was to visit St Mawes Castle. Got there to find no parking available. Got stuck in traffic at St Mawes village, no parking available so we carried on through as we had no option. Went back to the ferry and back to our accomodation. Worst morning spent in years☹️

Don’t come here expecting a massive military fort or grand stately Home because it is not. St mawes castle like it’s sister Pendennis Castle is a fortified medieval fort type gun tower. It’s well a preserved structure built by Henry the 8th with a Victorian gun battery which was added later. Smaller than Pendennis it has well laid out and groomed grounds. The castle layout is fascinating and ingenious with English Heritage doing their best to capture the atmosphere of the time. It’s very reasonable to enter and has a free audio tour. Also a good picnic spot on a sunny day. No cafe though just a coffee machine . Recommend

Situated 10 mins walk from the harbour at St Mawes, this is a great place to spend a couple of hours or walk off that cream tea! Excellent audio guide included and worth having for the extra info. English Heritage members get in free. Unlike most of the castles of this period, this one has not been modified since built so is unique ( I believe). David Starkey did a bit on it in his series on Henry VIII.

Pleasant staff on site who were very welcoming and helpful.not expensive compared to many others .outstanding views across the water and building in tip top condition for age.Lovely grounds should you take a picnic on a fine day. The introduction of an audio tour would make it more interesting or possibly guided tours .overall well worth visiting to spend an hour or so.

Thank steve s
