“Good food, great views in real style”
Reviewed 25 June 2012

Spent two nights in the upper rooms. To get to the room you have to leave the main hotel building and climb some steps up through their sub tropical garden, but what a view to wake up to each morning. Would choose this room again next time. Bed was very comfortable and the room really stylish if you like seaside chic. Food was almost perfect except for slightly overcooking the fish one night. Complimentary champagne because it was my birthday celebration. So much to do when you are there is you like the sea, walking, gardens and boating. All in all thoroughly recommend a stay.

Just got back from an anniversary stay at the Tresanton. First impressions were good, lovely quirky layout, amazing views, friendly staff.....all good. Checked in efficiently and was pleased to be given a voucher for complimentary champagne "as it was a special occasion." Valet parking was also welcome as we had no idea how to get to the car park so it was nice to have it taken out of our hands. Our room was in the Nook which is adjacent to the hotel - it was spacious and pleasantly furnished, nice but not amazing, and had a lovely big bathroom. The ready-packed beach bag that was available for our use was a nice touch - it had beach towels and a picnic rug in it in case you hadn't brought your own. There were no tea and coffee making facilities in the room which I would have liked (and for £300 per night expected,) reception readily arranged a pot of coffee and tea to be sent to our room - at a cost of £7 though! Dinner in the restaurant was very nice, quite a limited menu but food obviously good quality and presentation was excellent. Portion sizes weren't the biggest, so if you were ravenous when you arrived they may not be sufficient. I wasn't that impressed with the dessert menu, the only thing I liked was the orange cake which was lovely but tiny, and not worth £9. The staff were very attentive at dinner, even though it did feel like they were topping my glass up after every sip! Breakfast was very good, lots of choice and the pastries were heavenly.
We came away feeling relaxed and 'in love' with St Mawes - but not entirely sure it was worth what we paid.

Room Tip: Rooms in the Nook were very spacious.

The Tresanton was alas full when we first looked for a special hotel to finish our week touring beautiful Cornwall. Late on Friday afternoon we had left the Bedruthan Steps hotel disgusted with our trip in jeopardy and faced with a miserable drive back to the South East.

The inclement weather worked in our favour this time as they had some last minute cancellations and a few stays were cut short. We booked a Small Room (Room 12) with a sea view. After having been let down previously that day I was apprehensive but it was entirely misplaced. St Mawes is a truly beautiful location and a wonderful base from which to explore South East Cornwall. On arrival the hotel is quite unassuming, very private and secluded but as you mount the whitewashed inner stairs you begin to smile and relax. The hotel has so many wonderful touches, the terraces are fantastic if the weather allows and the gardens beautifully planted. The staff were excellent. Valet parking is efficient and friendly as the hotel's carpark is situated on the headland above the hotel and there are a lot of steps to get there. We were shown to our room and sighed, relieved.

The so called 'Small Room' was very well appointed with a wonderufl view over the water through leaded windows. The bathroom was very well presented with all Lefroy Brooks fittings, although the shower head could haev been a little further from the wall and pressure improved. It was perfectly adequate though. The room had a seperate toilet which was a nice touch. In the cupboard was a beachbag and beachmats to be used on your stay which was a lovely touch.

The staff were very helpful indeed. A minute spent on the chilly terrace and blankets arrived almost immediately. We ate in the main restaurant on our first night and found the food and service very good indeed. Fresh local ingredients cooked well and presented nicely.

Breakfast was excellent and the service again of the highest level. It appeared that there were more staff than guests. Now The Tresanton is not cheap at £245 per night BB for their cheapest rooms but I was more than happy to pay this price. There were a couple of small plumbing issues in the gents downstairs and indeed in the bathroom which I'm sure the hotel will put right immediately. They need to as little things like this should not detract from what they have to offer.

We didn't require it due to the weather but I wasn't sure I spotted Air conditioning within the main building, possibly due to the nature of it's construction. You might find it could be a bit too warm in the 'height of summer' but I would check this.

Warmly reccommend the Tresanton and will certainly be back in future as long as they maintain their standards.

Room Tip: Even our smaller room, Number 12 was very well appointed. Book a seaview.

We love the Tresanton. We got married here two years ago and had a room at the front of the main house above the restaurant, which features a small terrace and stunning views across St Mawes and the bay towards St Anthony Head.

We always try to return here whenever we're back in Cornwall. They've made a few changes recently. The restaurant has been extended and matched with the quirky seaside style of the original hotel, complete with mosaic floor. This was probably necessary as you could often find yourself elbow to elbow with your fellow diners when it was busy.

The menu has also changed slightly, and definitely for the worse. Cream tea at the Tresanton was always pricey at £9.50, but justified it because of the amazing setting and excellent service, along with the fact that you also got extra saffron cake along with your scones, jam and cream. Now the cake is listed on the menu as an extra item (£3.50!), but of course the price of the cream tea hasn't come down. Also, does £18 for fish and chips (a lunch special) sound like good value in anyone's book?

Come on Tresanton - the terrace or your cosy sitting room are an excellent place to spend the afternoon, just try to be bit less mercenary with your loyal customers!

I apologise for the disappointment we caused you.

The menu has changed mainly to include a wider choice of items, all individually priced.

The cream team used to include a lemon cake which I am glad you liked but was not very popular and often was left over. We have decided to produce a really good quality saffron cake, which has got a strong Cornish tradition and have introduce loose leaf tea, hence the price increase.

The fish and chip lunch offer is £18 with a glass of wine, hopefully that represents better value!

Thank you for your positive feedback, we do hope you will try us again.

Especially when the seaside is Hotel Tresanton. Completely relaxed from start to finish. Excellent room with terrace overlooking the bay; very good restaurant food; wonderful room service but, without a doubt, the jewel in this establishment are the staff. Discrete and professional from valet parking, housekeeping, maintenance, waiting, cooking, right through to check out.

We started our stay with a cream tea on the terrace to enjoy the views (we live locally but never tire of them) very pleasant with attentive staff. We were shown to our suite in Rock Cottage - all new decoration very tasteful. Delightfully spacious, with decked seating area outside to enjoy the view. Small wood burner in sitting room and plenty of DVD's to watch if weather is inclement. Beautiful marble bathroom with his and hers washbasins and walk in shower. Very large bedroom with personal touches everywhere, e.g. palm tree bedside lamp and shell collections on bookshelves. It was extremely relaxing and almost faultless until I did my usual hotel test - please let it be ….but alas, no, there were no pillow protectors. I was disappointed as I think mattress/pillow protectors are essential to protect me from them and them from me!!
Evening meal pleasant but not remarkable and Maitre d had an excellent way of making it special and personal without being over familiar, he is one of their gems. I was sad to leave, felt totally at 'home' and could have stayed forever. Please Olga - address this very basic good housekeeping standard and you have met my 100% room rating.
We plan to come again………I wonder……..

Room Tip: We had one of the best in the Hotel - worth paying for and reducing the length of stay - quality not...

We spent 3 nights here with a friend who was celebrating a special birthday. The hotel is well situated and the staff were very helpful, knowledgeable and professional. The quality of food was very high, especially the choice of hot dishes at breakfast. When booking, the descriptions of rooms available were presented very clearly.
We shall certainly stay here again when in the area.
