Fortunate to spend New Year in St Mawes we decided to try The Rising Sun... what a mistake ! After 7 hours travelling we checked into what can only be described as the overspill room, nothing like the brochure leads you to believe. In need of decoration and located directly above the bar so dont expect to get any sleep before the hours of closing.
Which brings me to mention the rudeness of the Management (not the staff... thumbs up to them) when asking for a drink past 10:30pm, try it, you will be told, no chance mate, bells gone and I dont care if you want another drink, I am going to bed and if you dont like it, tough...
If other hotels want to have night porters until 3am good for them, but not me so drink up and good night. After being moved to another room (twin... great for a romantic new year break) we decided to make the most of it and enjoy St. Mawes and we did. However, this was to be dampened but what I can only describe as the most memorable New Year of my life! After asking what time dinner started as no one had told us or given any info, we arrived for pre-dinner drinks at 7:30pm to a room with no atmosphere, no music and people standing around not knowing quiet what to do with thereselves. Upon being shown our table for 8:00pm , I can only describe what followed as the quickest 5 course meal of my life. done in stages of 4 table at a time, your selection of the menu was taken and wine ordered (once again, small selection as most had run out) from start to finish of around 150-200 people dinner was served, cleared and packed away by 11:15pm still with no atmosphere, no music and once again people wandering what next... well exactly nothing... people began to wander off home or sit in the lounge and those of us who wandered into the bar had the feeling of ground hog day, no atmosphere, no music and absolutely no idea that in about 20 minutes were were about to wish in the New Year... but wait, there's hope a someone pulled out a portable radio and at 4 minutes to 12 we heard the end of the song, then the bells strike twelve and at precisely 2 minutes past the radio switched off. and to top it off we were welcomed by the hotel management cracking open a bottle of champs to pour 6 glasses for the locals and then swig the rest himself behind the bar... I can only say definately go to St Mawes, beautiful place, excellent food but dont go to the Rising Sun... unless the Management has changed
