“An unexpected delight”
Reviewed 24 June 2012

We recently visited St Mawes on a day trip from Falmouth and after taking in the breathtaking views of the place and visiting the castle, we returned to the harbour for a light lunch. We had noticed The View Cafe (below the Ship & Castle Hotel) on arriving by boat earlier but disregarded it as it appeared very low to street level (semi-basement) and quite dark inside. However, returning later we stepped tentatively into the foyer of the cafe to check out the menu - A good selection and reasonably priced, with local seafood and fish specials. On entering the cafe we were greeted by a young lady who gestured for us to sit at any table and order at the counter when we were ready. The place was not particularly busy but it was light, clean, contemporary in style with a selection of different seating options. We sat at a table a little back from the window/s as several were already occupied, however we were still afforded an excellent "View" (as the cafe name suggests) of the harbour and estuary beyond, which was a pleasant surprise. I ordered a fresh mackerel fillet salad, which I assumed would only be a small starter as it was very reasonably priced, while my friend ordered a crab, pollack & ginger fishcake with salad garnish, again reasonably priced - On our assumption that both were starters, I also ordered a fresh crab salad to go with our dishes. There was a choice of "Mini" or "Main" and so we opted for the smaller option. My partner ordered a Cheese & Pickle sandwich (a personaal favourite!) with salad garnish & crisps. When our meals arrrived we were amazed at the size of them, both the main dishes & the "Mini" crab salad. They were excellentt value and extremely tasty. There was a good selection of sauces and dressings to go with our meals and all in all it was quite an unexpected delight. I would definitely recommend The View Cafe for a stop for Breakfast, Lunch or even just a coffee and cake. The decor may not be to everyone's taste - a quaint old fashioned tea shop it isn't - but the views are magnificient, considering the position of the cafe, and the food is second to none!

“Small things let you down”
Reviewed 23 April 2012

We recently had an impromptu lunch at this restaurant. We had to stand at the counter for ages while staff chatting in the kitchen were unaware of our presence. The general appearance of the place was dirty and unkempt. The skirting boards grubby and splashes on the side of the serving counter. The entrance to the hotel was strewn with cigarette ends and the foyer was unswept. The staff, though pleasant enough, were obviously untrained. The food was good and value for money. Shame how little things let the whole effect down.

Thank you for the time taken to write your review of our Cafe "The View". I was disappointed to read some parts of your review, we certainly do not leave our staff untrained and a considerable amount of time and money is spent on training our team. As for our levels of cleanliness I shocked at these comments, particularly being that a previous reviewer has praised this area highly. I will though take corrective action where required to ensure we are meeting our usual high standards in this important area.

Aside from those points I am pleased that you thought our food was good and we provided value for money. Our goal is simply to offer good quality refreshments for excellent value and it is good to see your review highlighted that area.

We hope that you will visit again soon

“First class food, polite staff, and inexpensive”
Reviewed 7 March 2012

We spotted this place as we drove into St Mawes and decided to grab a bite to eat as we hadn't had any breakfast and it was close to 1pm. There's a car park opposite so we left the car and strolled across to the cafe. First impression was of sparkling clean interior, decorated and furnished in a modern style, but with a pleasant, unrushed atmosphere. The young lady on the counter greeted us as we walked in, and showed us to a vacant table which already had menus on it.

My wife chose the home-made mushroom soup, served with a crusty roll and butter, I was slightly hungrier so chose the smoked mackeral fillet and salad. Both arrived within 5 minutes and both were beautifully fresh. There were two sizeable fillets on my plate, along with a colourful mixed leaf salad, with sliced peppers, cherry tomatoes, and cucumber. It was also served with three wedges of french bread and accompanying butter.

A wide choice of sauces was available on the counter so I chose some mayonnaise which wasn't the usual cheap, cafe variety, but a thick and creamy type. My wife said her soup was wonderful, thick without being stodgy, hot and well seasoned.

My mackeral was completely delicious, and no doubt very fresh.

We ate everything and washed it down with a pot of English tea whilst my wife enjoyed her lemon tea. The bill was well under £10 which we thought to be remarkable value. We paid the bill, left a handsome tip and both said we would endeavour to come back here whenever we visited St Mawes in the future.
