“The friendliest B&B in a beautiful setting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 August 2011

I stayed here with my boyfriend and parents when attending a family party in the Tresantan (not a millionaire so obviously couldn't stay there!). Although our room was not facing onto the sea, the view from the front of the house and the breakfast room more than made up for this. It's only a minutes walk from the seafront (although up a massive slippery hill to get back...best not attempted in the dark after a couple of drinks) and really convenient for shops and the couple of restaurants in St Mawes. The room was nice and clean and the mattress was really comfortable. Apart from the noise from the disco just down the hill, which stopped at midnight and can't be blamed on the B&B, it was peaceful and relaxing.

The thing that stands out for me about this B&B is how friendly and helpful the woman working there was - I think she was taking care of it for the owner. She really went out of her way to make our stay as comfortable as possible. She was so worried we would slip coming down the drive to the house in the dark she made us SWEAR over and over again we would use the side gate. After we had checked out, she let us leave our bags in the B&B, and when we came back to get them, change into our clothes for the party in her own bedroom. She tried to press umbrellas onto us as she was worried we'd get wet on the way as it was raining. We all felt so well looked after - she couldn't do enough to help us.

The only small downside (and just very very minor) is the breakfast. I would have loved a boiled egg, but the food served, although fresh fruit and bread and cereal, is all cold or you have to toast it yourself in the toaster in the dining room. Despite this, the view over the sea makes up for the lack of egg, and nobody wants a fry up when you're off to swim in the sea anyway.

Overall it was a good night in a beautiful old house with exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. I would highly recommend it to anyone else, and will return here if I ever need somewhere to stay in St Mawes.

Had read previous reviews of Braganza and found same as the more positive ones - stunning and interesting house, hosts couldn't do enough to help, accommodation clean and comfortable if a little old-fashioned but only added to the charm really! No 'full English' breakfast on offer but the abundance of juices, fruit, cereals, yogurts and continental breads and warm croissants was a welcome change, couldn't have asked for more! Only 2 minutes walk into the centre of the village too, brilliant place.

Room Tip: Think had room no. 4 - beautiful but note no stand-up shower - was a shower head attached to taps to...

This was our second, brief visit to Braganza and we were enchanted yet again. The dignified house oozes a fascinating faded elegance and is full of antique furniture, paintings, books and objets d'art galore, all available for guests to enjoy. The large windows give the rooms plenty of light and stunning views. Our welcome was warm and our bedroom comfy. Breakfast, served in the south facing dining room, was healthily delicious and spoiling - an amazing array of juices, fruits (fresh and stewed), cereals, seeds, nuts, grains, yogurt, breads, croissants muffins, home made jams and marmalade, choice of teas and the best caffetiere coffee we've had in UK. Nothing cooked so no lingering smells of frying. A pity we had a plane to catch and couldn't linger for longer. We recommend Braganza highly and I forgot to mention that WiFi is available in the drawing room.

My partner and I stayed in Braganza for two days in October and from the moment we arrived, I knew we would have a pleasant time. Krysyza (sorry if I spelt your name wrong) has lived in this stunning mansion house for most of her life and with its quirky decoration and old English atmosphere, you can tell it is a real family establishment, which she really welcomes you into. As well as the charming people who live here, one of the many charms of Braganza is that there is not an item of furniture or tableware that is newer than World War 2, and every surface is full of fascinating knick knacks and curios (all of which have a story attached). The building itself is by far the nicest (and biggest) house in St Mawes and is conveniently placed for walking down to the town, or up (and along) to the Castle / coast path.
The only disappointment with the stay (other than the surprisingly high cost) was the breakfast. For some reason, Krysyza has decided that (unlike every other B&B or private house in the UK) some mythical "health and safety" rule forbids her from offering a cooked breakfast because her kitchen isn't good enough. The spread of fruit and cereal on offer (in antique silver platters and bowls!) was impressive enough, but if every other B&B can cook something for their paying guests, surely Braganza can? Even one boiled egg would have done... but no, it was not to be (and having done some basic research, a misunderstood rule that doesn't have to be, either). A real shame for such an expensive stay, but one that doesn't stop me recommending it wholeheartedly.

The welcome we received was second to none. The owner was accommodating, gracious and full of information about the local area.
We had all the rooms in the house. They were all lovely, comfortable and clean.
The breakfasts were served in the most elegant fashion. Fruits, crumpets, muffins, croissants. LOVELY. We were all grateful that there wasn't a cooked breakfast as we would have eaten too much everyday.

Me and my partner stayed at Braganza on a 2 week trip traveling through Cornwall. If you are looking for somewhere which offers old world charm and warm family run hospitality, then I think you would seriously struggle to find anywhere better.

The house stands proudly about 50 yards up the hill in the centre of St Mawes and the views from the bedrooms, garden and lounge are simply stunning with unobscured views over the bay.

The gardens are enourmous and well manicured, and you can happly sit outside for hours in total peace and quiet watching the boats jot around in the distance. If that doesn't suite and you fancy something a little more active and would like to learn some sailing, ask the staff for Barry, who teaches lessons or hires out some charming boats.

The owner and staff are all lovely and very attentive, and if you are considering a stay in cornwall and would like somewhere very special, than I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

What a rare find! With what must be the best harbour view in the whole of the South Coast of England. Enchanting hostess, beautifully presented continental breakfast, and an incredibly comfy bed. If you want a special retreat with a view to die for in a charming and elegant period home, this is definitely for you. It was for us!
