“Disappointment! AVOID (unless real life Fawlty Towers is your thing)”
Reviewed 31 July 2013

We arrived at the Wootons country hotel just after lunch on monday and before we booked in we enquired about a gluten free option for breakfast and were assured that it would not be a problem and told that it was quite common for guests there to have a gluten intolerance.

the following morning at breakfast we asked the waitress what options there were for a gluten free breakfast. She went to the kitchen to ask, and returned saying there was no gluten free option, i then explained to her that the previous day we had been assured that there would be no problem, she then went back to the kitchen as she left i apologised for the trouble we were causing her and said that this was not her problem as she obviously was uncomfortable dealing with an"unusual request" (staring out of the window and not really communicating confidently at all) we were told later that she was a new member of staff so it is understandable but not our problem. i suggested that maybe if there is no gluten free bread maybe pancakes could be made if they had some cornflour. Combined with this my wife is also vegetarian which cut the options down further as the veggie breakfast is the same as the full english without the meat.

we were then met by the waitresses boss, an older lady who was slightly aggressive and we were accused of upsetting her "poor little waitress" and that they had never had anyone in before with a gluten intolerance. She informed my wife that she would have to make do with Tomatoes, egg and beans and cereal (which would have been completely fine had we been told the the day before and we would have gone elsewhere) and told to "go and eat another yoghurt" The woman was patronising and rude especially as we are not the type to complain.

added to all of this the mattress in our room (6) was so worn that the springs along one side did not work and the bed creaked and knocked against the wall when we moved. it was so uncomfortable that i slept on the floor! not ideal at all as i had to drive home the next day and really needed a good nights sleep.

The location is the only thing going for this hotel Tintagel is stunning but best to enjoy it from somewhere else.

Room Tip: If you must stay here definitely not room 6

We booked our single nights stay at the perfectly positioned Wootons in Tintagel, as part of our travels along the beautiful North Cornwall and Devon coast, having found reviews on this website. Although it was done on a last minute phone call, I was rather taken aback when asked if I could pay up front as it was a busy time and we might not turn up! My surprise and slight indignation at this inference however soon gave reassurance that we were not people who would behave in a way that others have obviously and sadly done in the past. On arrival, we were welcomed and shown to our room which was spacious, pleasant and with lovely views over the garden, coastline and Church, although the lack of clearness to the glass (probably caused by the salty environment) did spoil this a little. After a very comfortable nights sleep, we enjoyed a hearty and delicious cooked breakfast which was served by a very pleasant gentleman who reflected the family run feel we experienced from all the staff during our stay. We would be happy to stay again in the future and would also recommend the Wootons to others. Thank you.

We stayed two nights at the Wootons Hotel, as a party of three. Although we made the reservation for two nights, we couldn't stay in the same room, but had to change for the second night. The first room was a bit worn down and we didn't like the carpet in the bathroom. The second room, though, was better.
Breakfast was fine. We liked the atmosphere in the bar - and enjoyed the billard game.

Stayed for one night because the hotel we we stopping in for the rest of the week was full until Sunday.the comments about the tables and chairs are correct mis match of colours. As we checked in there was a leak coming through the ceiling in the lounge with a bucket under it.
Bedroom furniture was old and could do with changing.the was a burn mark from an iron in the carpet. And the bed creaked when you moved and the headboard banged against the wall.
Bathroom was drab and out dated with dark wood effect laminate all over the walls.Even the loo seat was a different colour to the pan.
Breakfast was ok with reasonable quality produce with a choice of tea or help yourself to coffee.
Would not recommend this hotel for £80.00 per night when there are some better hotels offering better facilities in the area.

i stayed at wooton for 2 nights and could not fault it. The owners were friendly, helpful and welcoming, Rocky was an absolute star. The breakfast was one of the best i'v had for a long time. My room was comfortable and had everything i needed. Perfectly located in the village so that everything was just a stroll away. I will defiantly be going back hopefully later on in the year.

Room Tip: room on the front, as quieter than back.

We spent 4 nights at the Wootons and just loved it. The landlord, Ian, was charming and always ready to chat. The bar was busy with locals watching their sport on TV and we felt very welcome. Our room was a little run down but very comfortable nevertheless. The hot water was sometimes elusive as well but even that did not spoil our enjoyment - we just learned patience.
Breakfast was adequate, being the usual fare but we did have dinner a couple of nights and we thoroughly enjoyed it, particularly the night we had ribs and lasagne. The crab sandwiches are excellent. Tintagel Cove and Merlin's Cave are just down the hill from the hotel - a magical and romantic place which we loved and will go back to one day.

Room Tip: A room at the front would be better as the locals sit on the patio outside the bar just under the re...

We stayed for one night in the honeymoon suite as a birthday surprise for my partner and we both really enjoyed it. Very welcoming, relaxing, friendly and the food was excellent. my only gripe was that we didn't stay longer.
