“Lovely break”
Reviewed 28 October 2012

Stayed here for one night for a relaxing break away from it all. Was a bit unsure after reading previous reviews but I was pleasantly surprised. The staff were very helpful from giving us an oil heater for the room (was a bit chilly but heating was then turned up) to providing a packed lunch at very short notice and photocopying our walking book to save the pages from getting wet! The room was spacious and quite modern. The bathroom needed a little lick of paint but not enough to bother us. The evening meal had a choice of about 5 starters, mains and desserts. At first we thought it was quite a small choice but I think the smaller menu meant that the choices that were on the menu were cooked to perfection and the food was delicious. Very good value at £19.95 for three courses. The bar was comfortable and there was plenty of seating areas around reception too. The breakfast was a buffet and there was a large selection of cereal and a very good cooked breakfast with the most fantastic scrambled egg! The packed lunch cost less than £5 and included sandwiches, crisps, fruit, chocolate/tracker bar and a large selection of raisons/nuts/pork pie etc. We would denifnately recommend this hotel for a good value, excellent food and comfortable place to stay.

Stayed here for three nights as a base to go walking.
A lovely spacious feel but needs some updating. We learned it was in receivership at the time so they were doing well to keep up the standard. The food was very good. The waitress very interesting and entertaining ...quite a character!
Staff were helpful and the rooms comfortable.
We would stay here again. It's a gracious old country house and it would be a shame to see it close.

Room Tip: Some rooms have nice outdoor sitting areas

Stayed here with Hf Holidays. Hotel very tired although well situated. Even if refurbished would never be more than two or three star but could be very pleasant. Service was a bit hit and miss and not very professional but the were (usually) pleasant enough. Cut lunches were excellent and generous. Breakfasts were acceptable. As for the dinners, they should stick to simple English food which they could do OK. When they tried to be fancy and modern they failed miserably. Hf Holidays was a bit like being on a cross between Hi di Hi and Dad's Army but the walking was enjoyable.

Thank you for your feedback which helps us to monitor and improve. We have recently refurbished the lounge and bar. More refurbishment to bedrooms is also planned. We are proud to announce that VisitEngland recently awarded us as a 3 star guest accommodation and presented us with a breakfast award.

There are no phones in the rooms, no public phones in the hotel, no cell phone service, and no internet access at the hotel. The computer provided for guests was an out-of-order antique, and the limited wi-fi that was supposed to be in the lobby didn't work. The staff acted like they were computer illiterate and couldn't care less.

Room Tip: Find a different hotel.

Thank you for your feedback.

I am pleased to advise that the wi fi is being upgraded in mid October as additional broadband lines are being installed by BT – apologies for the inconvenience.

I have just spent 4 nights at this hotel & thoroughly enjoyed it. Room was of a good size, comfortable & clean. Breakfast & dinner were good, quick service, variety of choice, well cooked & with some imagination. I found the staff efficient yet friendly & helpful, especially as I was on my own. The setting for this hotel is so beautiful, step out of the car park & you are on the footpath to Dovedale & all the lovely walks here. I look forward to returning.

I stayed in this hotel last weekend with my wife. Apparently in the past the hotel had financial problems and is now run by HF holidays who mainly organise walking holidays. I have used other HF hotels and found them very friendly and welcoming - apparently they run holidays for 50,000 people each year so they must be doing something right!

As regards Peveril of the Peak, our bedroom was clean comfortable and spacious. As others have said the general decor of the hotel does need improving but that is to be expected if the previous owners had financial problems. As others have said the booking arrangements are a bit complicated, you have to make the booking through the HF Holidays head office. We did that and found them very helpful but of course it does make it difficult to make a late booking. This arrangement rather surprised me because in the past I have been able to book directly with other HF hotels as late bookings.

As regards staff I found them really helpful and friendly, I don't recognise the critical comments made by others. Breakfast was fine, a traditional serve-yourself English cooked breakfast but fresh fruit and croissant were also available. Dinner might be more problematic for some because there did not seem to be an a la Carte menu only table d'hôte. For us the latter was fine with three choices of starter, four main choices and similar sweets. It was £19.50 for a three course dinner which I thought good value.

Despite its shortcomings with regard to decor the main attraction of this hotel is its location. The village of Thorpe is very beautiful and the hotel sits right on the footpath down to Dovedale stepping stones (15 minutes away), as a center for exploring the southern Peak District it surely cannot be bettered.

Visited this hotel several times on spec over the last few years and were given a very warm welcome by Gabriella and a room for the night. Since being taken over by HF we went on spec last week. Found new reception staff who were not helpful at all and said we could book through head office, since it was evening the office was closed. When we asked if they could check around locally for somewhere for us to stay as we could get no mobile signal, we were just told to go to the Isaac Walton. We had 3 children with us. Having stayed here regularly in the past I will no longer use the hotel as since HF took over prices have increased quite considerably and some new staff need to go on a course in customer service. No complaints about previous staff, food or rooms, yes it was a bit tired but for our purposes (walking and sightseeing) it was perfect and as a single parent also affordable, but no longer unfortunatlely.
