My boyfriend and I visited the pub and restaurant a couple of times when we were staying in Clovelly. The bar area is comfortable and welcoming and has a lovely view of the harbour. The formal restaurant upstairs provided very friendly service and delicious elegant food that was not pretentious. It was a delight on both occasions!

We have stayed at the Red lion on a number of occasions over the past 16 years and have always been their biggest fans in terms of friendly staff, accomdation food and genral relaxation.

We have just returned from a three night break for my birthday not to be forgotten.
If you want a quiet romantic weekend do not go when there are shooting parties on . [ Dec/ January ]The noise and lack of respect for any other guests is quite incredible!
Staff interested only in the shooters and service altered to accommadate them.

what a shame!

New manager rather disinterested and no apology or asking guests if they enjoyed their weekend. Changes to a normally lovely menu are also dissapointing.

Beware if you are looking to stay!

We stayed in 2 rooms for 2 nights in July of 2012.

Clovelly was an unplanned event for us. We had left St Ives earlier than expected(very crowded) and were looking for a quiet, peaceful couple of days after having driven around Europe and then the UK for 23 days. We found our serenity, and a little bit of paradise, here in Clovelly.
Phoned the Red Lion from our car, and luckily were able to secure 2 rooms for the night.
We were met with the new manager(at the time) who was exceedingly helpful, friendly, and thorough. I'm sorry that I have forgotten his name.
We loved The Red Lion. Old, yet updated, and full of atmosphere and charm. From the lobby to the restaurant to the cafe tables to the beautiful views. Everyone was very very friendly and ever so helpful.
Clovelly itself is a dream. I'd read that it can be crowded at times--and yet here we were in the middle of July and it was just busy enough to feel alive, yet quiet enough to give us that serenity we were looking for. So much so, in fact, that we stayed an extra night.
One of the rooms had the most incredible view over the sea. At night, the sky was a fiery lavender, and we fell asleep to the sounds of the seagulls and the coastal waters lapping agains the rocks.
We were lazy in Clovelly, and yet strong legged at the same time. A walk up into the center of the village from the Red Lion is a testament to lung power and muscled legs. Cobbled all the way! Wonderful!
Breakfast was superb. Full English and particularly tasty.
Dinner both nights was excellent. Nice menu, many beers and ales to choose from.
We hope to return to this bucolic living postcard by the sea in the future and stay at the wonderful Red Lion again. Highest recommendations!

This is a fabulous place for a quick getaway. We stayed here the night before shooting on the "Clovelly Shoot". Lovely spot and welcoming atmosphere. Could do with a bit of a face lift in the bar area but the room we stayed in was lovely and very cosy. Right on the beach, location doesn't get much better than this.

Our third year of xmas light switch on ,always first sunday in December. We always stay in the red lion as the carol service fireworks & lights are all on the harbour area adjacent to the hotel.
We have actually been visiting the red lion for around fifteen years running always at the end of November for my birthday but decided to come a bit later for the Christmas lights, we love the hotel and village but the staff really make our stay special having become regulars we hope we have made some friends but they really are brilliant ,friendly attentive and welcoming.
The service starts at the top of the cobbles with carols & mulled wine then meanders down to the harbour where the local vicar gives a traditional service with readings from the villagers then more carols with woolsery schoolchildren, Now the countdown to the lights all building up to the grande finale of a magnificent firework disply from the harbour wall (magical).
Back to the bar for another mulled wine which tonight was very busy so back to the room to watch from our bedroom window as everyone starts the ascent back up the cobbles. (glad we don't)
What we love about the hotel is the location the history the tradition and the food is excellent we will definitely be back for more next year.

Room Tip: The sail loft is separate from the hotel (only seconds away) but separate.

I stay on a regular basis at the Red Lion in Clovelly as the location is excellent to relax in. What is more, one can enjoy relaxing massages tailored to one's needs with Emma, the local massage therapist. You can find her leaflets in the hotel's bedrooms. She offers special discounts to residents of the Red Lion. Treatments take place in your room or at her dedicated room close by in the village. I prefer her room at "Calming Quay".

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view, there are many.
