“Wonderful views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 February 2014

A very comfortable hotel with warm and friendly service. An amazing location right next to the beach - it's not often you can park on one! We opted to eat in the bar, which comes with open fire and beams. The breakfast was very well cooked and tasty.

Be aware that the road down to the hotel is extremely steep and twisty. It might be easier to park at the top and get the hotel to collect you from there. Also, the fantastic walk up and down through the village is challenging, especially if it's been raining.

A unique village well worth visiting and staying at the Red Lion offers the chance to be as close as possible to the sea.........

there must be something at the top of the village distorting the time space continuim because we certainly shifted back 400 years when we entered Clovelly . The Red LIon is a fine well run hotel with helpful friendly staff in a beautiful setting beside the Atlantic serving enormous delicious breakfasts, fine beers and bar meals (we didn't try the resturant) and beautiful views, to get an idea of the location read this excerpt from Charles Dickens 'A Message from the Sea'
Captain Jorgan had to look high to look at it, for the village was built sheer up the face of a steep and lofty cliff. There was no road in it, there was no wheeled vehicle in it, there was not a level yard in it. From the sea-beach to the cliff-top two irregular rows of white houses, placed opposite to one another, and twisting here and there, and there and here, rose, like the sides of a long succession of stages of crooked ladders, and you climbed up the village or climbed down the village by the staves between, some six feet wide or so, and made of sharp irregular stones. The old pack- saddle, long laid aside in most parts of England as one of the appendages of its infancy, flourished here intact. Strings of pack- horses and pack-donkeys toiled slowly up the staves of the ladders, bearing fish, and coal, and such other cargo as was unshipping at the pier from the dancing fleet of village boats, and from two or three little coasting traders. As the beasts of burden ascended laden, or descended light, they got so lost at intervals in the floating clouds of village smoke, that they seemed to dive down some of the village chimneys, and come to the surface again far off, high above others. No two houses in the village were alike, in chimney, size, shape, door, window, gable, roof-tree, anything. The sides of the ladders were musical with water, running clear and bright. The staves were musical with the clattering feet of the pack-horses and pack-donkeys, and the voices of the fishermen urging them up, mingled with the voices of the fishermen’s wives and their many children. The pier was musical with the wash of the sea, the creaking of capstans and windlasses, and the airy fluttering of little vanes and sails.

Its that good, though the stream that brought water to the village down the main pathway has been rerouted and the donkeys are all in the fields.

Room Tip: the sail loft is an annexe though I believe the rooms are all very comfortable, if you dislike drivi...

When I booked the hotel I was entranced by the pictures of it and Clovelly online- so was trying not to be TOO disappointed if it was not as wonderful as I and hoped in the weeks leading up to the trip. We went for Valentines Day and stayed two nights- wish we could have stayed for weeks. The hotel is a dream- old beams- lovely fires- great food- helpful staff- a lounge to sit in and we could see the sea and the harbour from the bedroom window. Everything about Clovelly was entrancing- despite the fact that the weather was better than forecast so we had to go out of the bar and go walking [not a fan of the old exercise] The walks were stunning along the coast and the village is just perfect. The Red Lion is at the bottom of the hill and so you get the most marvellous views of the boats and the waterfall. Only slight criticism is that the bar meals are HUGE and we couldn't finish the meal on Saturday .. which was a shame as there was no room for dessert...

Booked for dinner and we were really looking forward to our evening meal. The Red Lion has a fabulous location but the shame of it all is that they seem to take advantage of that. The food was ok, we opted for the two course dinner menu @ £24.95 a head. So we ordered two steaks which came with a huge mound of rocket one mushroom and a well the only way to describe it was a plate of open brick work chips? Which we had to share? There was nothing wrong with the food but really not enough of it. We had the creme brulee as our second course which again was ok but nothing to shout about.
Overall we were not overwhelmed with anything but left feeling we had paid a lot of money for not a lot to remember it by!!
Real shame as this place could be fabulous.

My boyfriend and I visited the pub and restaurant a couple of times when we were staying in Clovelly. The bar area is comfortable and welcoming and has a lovely view of the harbour. The formal restaurant upstairs provided very friendly service and delicious elegant food that was not pretentious. It was a delight on both occasions!

We have stayed at the Red lion on a number of occasions over the past 16 years and have always been their biggest fans in terms of friendly staff, accomdation food and genral relaxation.

We have just returned from a three night break for my birthday not to be forgotten.
If you want a quiet romantic weekend do not go when there are shooting parties on . [ Dec/ January ]The noise and lack of respect for any other guests is quite incredible!
Staff interested only in the shooters and service altered to accommadate them.

what a shame!

New manager rather disinterested and no apology or asking guests if they enjoyed their weekend. Changes to a normally lovely menu are also dissapointing.

Beware if you are looking to stay!
