Owner description: The paddle steamer Kingswear Castle is the last remaining coal-fired paddle steamer in operation in the UK today. She was built in 1924 at Philip & Son of Dartmouth. The Paddle Steamer Preservation Society spent 15 years fully restoring her to her former glory offering river trips on the Medway from 1985. In late 2012, she returned to the home waters of the River Dart after an absence of 47 years.

Nice experience on a well maintained historic paddle steamer. Commentary was good and funny although there was a lot missed and a 20 minute spell with nothing at all.very nice trip though! Definately worth doing if you're in Dartmouth.

Had a great time on paddle steamer as part of the Dartmouth-Totnes-Paignton round robin trip. Smooth boat trip in beautiful surroundings with excellent commentary by the Captain. The only was to discover the River Dart! We saw seals too!

We took a one way trip on the paddle steamer from Dartmouth to Totnes.
The plus points - we were able to sit undercover, out of the sun and our less mobile family members were helped on and off the boat. The Captain's narrative was both informative and entertaining.
However, the minus point - our trip was spoilt to some extent by a party of 10+ adults, who boarded the paddle steamer with huge picnic baskets and stood in the centre of the boat, drinking alcohol for the entire trip. This made it impossible for us to see the attractions on the opposite side of the river and made it very difficult to hear some of the Captain's commentary. The boat was full, and so there was no where for us to move (although that would have been very difficult anyway for us due to mobility issues).
I do not understand why this large party did not book a private cruise for their celebrations and I would suggest that the company which runs the Paddle Steamer reviews its policy on allowing such parties in future.
Please note that I have based my ratings on the tour as it would have been without the loud party, as hopefully this was a one off event.

We signed up for an organised trip through the Newton Abbot branch of the National Trust for a trip on the Kingswear Castle Paddle Steamer, which we had wanted to see since it came back to the River Dart last year after many years away. Our sailing was at noon and I was glad that I had enquired at the booking kiosk what refreshments were available on board. Learning that in addition to drinks there was nothing more than nuts, crisps and Mars Bars, we were able to equip ourselves with crab sandwiches (from the excellent Crab Shell) before we boarded and they saw us happily to Totnes; supplemented by large G&Ts from the bar - We thought it would be churlish not to patronise that, even if their food offering was thin! Living locally we have cruised the Dart often, but the paddle steamer was a new and very special experience which we will look for excuses (like house-visitors) to repeat!
