It's not my style to give a negative review and i'm trying to give a objectionable review without being too scathing.

We are fortunate enough to have stayed in some beautiful hotels and we booked into the Dart Marina Hotel to join friends celebrating a 50th Birthday. The hotel is only 10 mile from where we live and has a good reputation and commands a premium price. The views from the Hotel are fantastic, however we live in a beautiful part of the county and are lucky enough to wake up every morning to wonderful sea views over Torbay, the English Riviera; our review of the hotel is not therefore corrupted or clouded by the stunning views that are enjoyed from the hotel over the river Dart.

We booked a room with a balcony and the room was very well appointed. The hotel has clearly undergone an expensive renovation, the furnishing and bathrooms are of a high standard.

At £250.00 B&B per night I expected something special and sadly this is where the hotel is lacking.

Firstly I was told that they don't do Valet Parking despite there being someone greeting you on arrival.

Our room on the first floor, was incredibly small. I must emphasis the room was well appointed, however it measured 9' by 9'. Your had to walk past the bed in single file. The bathroom was no larger than 6' by 8'. It had a shower over the bath and a very small bath. I'm 5'9" and 11 1/2 st and felt rather snug laying in the bath. I'm sure anyone 6' and more than 12 st simply wouldn't be able to fit in the bath comfortably.

There are two large Elemis dispensers on the wall in the middle of the bath but no products provided to use over the sink.

Out terrace was lovely and afforded a fantastic view of the river and views across to Kingswear, The Rattan furniture was of good quality although there were a number of cracked tiles on the floor that should have been replaced.

We left our room a little untidy with towels on the floor when we went out for our evening meal, but assumed and expected at this price point, that maids would be in to tidy our room and carry out a turn down. Wrong! when we arrived back to our room it was evident that nobody had been in the room, clearly they don't offer this basic service.

We were quite late returning to the hotel in the evening and headed to the bar for a night cap, after searching the deserted hotel for around 10 minutes someone surfaced and we ordered a round of drinks. I ordered a Mojito from the cocktail list and Nick, our newly appeared barman read the ingredients from a list that he had been given, however he didn't have clue as to how to put them together and create the drink. we spent 10 minutes training him on how to put the ingredient together, muddle the lime, sugar and fresh mint, he was an enthusiastic apprentice! Hopefully he'll be able to make decent Mojito for future guests.

Our friends had a suite on the ground floor with a small outside terrace and this room was particularly nice. The room was of good proportion and more in keeping with what we would expect at this price.

On closer inspection our overall impression of the hotel was it had the feel of a Travel Lodge that has undergone an expensive refurbishment. There was a total lack of service that is simply unacceptable and we will not be staying again. The final nail in the coffin came on checkout when our friends were charge for a bucket of ice in their room, an insignificant sum compared to the overall cost of the stay but a point of principal, when challenged on this point they were informed "It was the hotels standard policy"!

Room Tip: The Suite on the ground floor with the outside terrace

We stayed for 3 nights in May 2014 and enjoyed it so much we returned for a few more nights in June. Excellent hotel, good service and a good location. Not cheap but worth it in our opinion. Go for the rooms with balcony, well worth the extra.

Well, yes it has a great position, the staff were friendly, wonderful B and w photos on the walls and our room had a nice view, but this hotel needs dragging into the 21st century. I suspect the problem is at management level. I got the impression that many guests were repeat customers, which in the light of our experience seemed rather strange.Other reviewers have commented on the size of the room. Ours was very small, hardly room to move, likewise the bathroom with a weird and uncomfortable place for the plug hole in the middle of the bath and a toilet seat positioned so the flush could not be operated until the toilet seat was down !
My wife (a world expert...) says that normally the advertised Elemis beauty products in a good hotel would include individual sized shampoo, conditioner, body lotion,as a minimum, replenished every day. However in our room there was just shampoo and shower gel in industrial size containers by the bath which were difficult to access.
The restaurant was a big problem. It seemed like the evening menu never changed. There was little or no local produce. Such a shame when the area has plenty of local produce to offer. The menu included dishes which had laughably pretentious ingredients ( foam, jus and emulsion??? Come on...sounds more like a hardware store !) The food was definitely not freshly cooked. Fairly grim..Zero atmosphere in dining room, more like a rest home in Eastbourne. Wine list was couched in equally pretentious and daft language and appeared to be trying to have one bottle from too many countries rather than having the confidence to offer more bottles from fewer countries. The second night we ate at a great local restaurant in town . So would we go back? Nope - not until the management sorts it all out. Shame. Missed opportunity.

A really good hotel in a wonderful location overlooking the river and a couple of minutes from the town restaurants and boat pier. Food was extremely good. Staff on the whole very good. Our only disappointment was our room. We booked the double with balcony but it was far too small for two

Just returned from five nights at this lovely hotel, right on the River Dart and exceptionally quiet and peaceful. The staff were friendly and professional, the rooms comfortable and spotlessly clean with lovely views of the river and the food in the restaurant delicious. Would highly recommend this hotel and hope to return again before too long.

Room Tip: I would recommend asking for a room on the top floor.
