“Delicious bread and cakes, great pizzas”
Reviewed 18 August 2012

We purchased bread and cakes several times from this lovely French themed cafe and were wowed by the authentic French taste and variety of lovely tasties available. We also enjoyed the 'eat in' experience, although the tables are a little close together and the place can get crowded. The croissants and pains au chocolate are absolutely yummy buttery treats and it's therefore a must for breakfast. We also tried the afternoon/evening menu and found the fresh pasta to be truly delicious, homemade fare with tasty creamy sauce and the pizza generously topped with fresh ingredients that were clearly very good quality. The apple pie was quite addictive for me, while my husband took to the shortbread. We also liked the fact that the coffee is served in good sized mugs rather than small cups which makes a difference. The staff members all seem very nice and friendly, some of them are French and some are local people. We'll definitely return!

“A real taste of France”
Reviewed 20 July 2012

Oh my goodness, this place is amazing! It is a little piece of France - the music, the ambience, the staff, the food. We ate dinner here (we both had pizzas - yum!), and for dessert chose patisseries from the counter (which was a very difficult decision). The cakes were absolutely delicious: 'proper' French cakes that you struggle to find here in England. Regarding other people's comments about the staff - I don't understand these complaints. The staff are French and treat their customers in the French manner - you come to this cafe for a real taste of France! Bon Apetit!

“up your attitude”
Reviewed 16 July 2012

The 'fresh' bread was OK - though someone elsewhere told us it is all imported pre-cooked. The croissants and pain au raisin were lovely. Sell out of bread early but plenty of pastries all day - they looked nice but did not notice many folk buying them. The attitude of staff seemed a little dismissive which is a shame. No-one can afford to be too complacent with service in today's market.

“Sat there for 20 minutes”
Reviewed 15 July 2012

We were show to a table which had the menu's on it, after 20 + minutes of being completely ignored, whilst various people came into the shop side of the cafe and were served by the waiter, we left and went to The Dolphin, which was fantastic and we can certainly recommend.

“Stick to the cold food and pizza”
Reviewed 1 July 2012

My wife had been here before and told me the hot chocolate was fantastic so we decided to try them out for a quick pre-theatre dinner.

The welcome from the young lady was warm, the young man who gave us menus typically Gallic or, perhaps, Parisian... not rude but offhand and just slightly dismissive in teh way of French waiters.

It's a limited menu salads, baguettes, pizza & pasta plus a few specials.
I went for an excellent Ham Terrine starter which came with a good side salad and some good bread... a main course size for many... which my wife dipped into also.

My wife's ravioli special was OK rather than special. The board had suggested a tomato and olive oil sauce, there was no sign of the tomato and far too much oil... but the ravioli wasn't too bad.

I went for the lobster and crayfish linguini... the pasta was well-overcooked. I'm guessing the sauce was pre-prepared (which isn't at all unreasonable given the cooking facilities behind the counter where the food is put together) but had been over-heated, the crayfish were shrivelled and chewy, the couple of pieces of lobster more a texture of chicken. Seafood needs a delicate touch rather than a microwave.

Other reviews suggest that the cold food, cakes baguettes, pizza's are excellent... my starter certainly was and the pizza on the table next to us looked pretty impressive. Our hot food was distinctly average. So, maybe, they'd be better sticking to what they do really well and leave the other stuff to someone else... it's better to be excellent at a limited menu than spoil a reputation with stuff you're not really geared up to prepare
