We had a sunday evening Carvery Roast. Plates small so portion sizes a little mean but it was all tasty and the staff were friendly. Very nice atmosphere and interesting pub. Loo's upstairs and there was another carvery for the residents which looked and smelled very nice

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel, we are glad that you enjoyed our Sunday Carvery. Just to let you know our upstairs Carvery in our restaurant is open to residents and non-residents alike but can get very busy so be sure to book if you come again. Kind regards.

My wife and I stayed in The Castle Hotel for one night at the end of a week travelling around. The staff are really friendly and helpful and the room (No 15) was wonderful. The views over the river were fantastic and it is a lovely way to watch the world go by. The breakfast was also good and whilst we were eating the owner mingled and spoke to each table of guests which was really nice to see. When we spoke to him he was very friendly and happy to talk to us.

Just returned from a five night break at this wonderful hotel. The holiday gets off to a good start as the staff remove your luggage and then valet park the car for you. We didn't bother using the car at all, boats and trains can take you everywhere you need to go.
The room are all different and have their own character. Ours had what remains of a priest's hole in it! Tea, coffee, chocolate and biscuits are provided in the room and a lovely touch, bottled water and ice replenished every day (other hotels take note).
It's well worth paying the extra for a river view, ours was on the second floor but the Lookout at the top is another great one to go for.
Newspapers were delivered to the rooms if requested about 7am. (The pleasure of lying in bed and reading a newspaper with a cup of tea!)

The negative comments? There aren't any - we'll return to this fantastic hotel.

Room Tip: River view rooms worth the extra, only slight downside is you might get some noise from the bars but...

Thoroughly enjoyed the best homemade chicken and mushroom pie ever tasted and chicken burger and fries. Fab bar-man kept all entertained, will be returning! May be an advantage to find a table early in the bar tho. The restaurant looked beautiful and staff were very pleasant when we said we didn't require a la carte at lunchtime

Bargain offer on a Sunday night. This is a real old-time hotel with lots of charm. Amazingly busy on saturday night in the 2 bars - lots of atmostphere. The main attraction is the location on the harbour front with great views. Also an easy walk to the excellent Seahorse restaurant.

Having been let down by another local restaurant, where we had booked a table for 12 but arrived to find the restaurant closed, we asked at the Royal Castle if they could fit us in at the last minute. And they did, laying out their private room within 20 minutes, and looking after us very well throughout the evening. We all thoroughly enjoyed the food we chose - all well presented and delicious - and although a little pricey, well worth it. (Must comment particularly on the fabulous bread, which I had with my very good seafood chowder.). Thank you, Royal Castle, for what after all turned out to be a very enjoyable evening for us.

We didn't stay here but we ate, several times! Breakfast is amazing...upstairs, wide range of choice, excellent service, beautiful view. Lunch...the seafood chowder was so good we went back for it 3 times over the time we stayed. Sunday lunch has to be booked but we couldn't believe the value and quality. We had our "last supper" before we left and we the lamb and vegetables were cooked to perfection, served with courteous attention. Good value, excellent locally sourced food, wonderful staff. Can't wait until next year!
