Review of Dartmouth Castle

Attraction details
Owner description: One of the most picturesquely sited fortresses in England. For over six hundred years, the castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy port of Dartmouth. John Hawley, privateering mayor of Dartmouth and the prototype of the flambouyant "Shipman" in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, began this fascinating complex of defences in 1388. Explore the passageways and climb to the top of the Gun Tower for stunning views out to sea. Child friendly and dog friendly.

“A great castle!”

It's certainly worth a visit if you're in the area! The castle itself is impressive, and the display boards around it give it historical context. It's nice to walk to it from Dartmouth and have lunch at the Castle Tea Rooms afterwards.

“Amazing views, must visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2014

It is not that much to see in the castle, but it stratigic location makes the views from it amazing. It is a lovely place with a lot of coastal walks around and would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting the area. There is also nice coastal walk.
Reaching the castle is a bit tricky, because the road is very narrow and could a bit busy with visitors. The parking is limited too. I recommend parking somewhere around Dartmouth town (although it also gets busy) and taking the little ferry to the castle. It takes only 10 min and is quite cheap with nice views of the beutiful Dartmouth harbour. Or you can do the opposite, find a space around the Castle and have a return trip to Dartmouth with the ferry.

“adventure spot”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 August 2014

The area was beautiful. I would love to stay in the area next time. The roads were very small but when you got there it was worth it. My kids (4 & 9) loved the castle and it was a fun place to explore. We watched kayaks out on the water and want to do that next time as well.

“Walk up to Dartmouth Castle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2014

Loved the walk from Dartmouth to the castle. I went from Brixham by bus them crossed over the river on the chain ferry for 50p. Walked along the river then up a very steep hill to the castle on the top. It was quite tiring but the tea tasted even better for it. Of course the walk down was easy. The views were wonderful.

“Lovely piece of history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2014

A great trip to the castle. We parked about 1/2 a mile away and walked there, a lovely walk with beautiful views over the harbour.

The castle has so much history and was lots of fun for us adults and the children (4&6). Th church is also very beautiful.
