Review of Coleton Fishacre

Coleton Fishacre

We went especially for the gardens and the hot bed, in front of the house, was alive with colour.
As I have had an operation, I prebooked a wheelchair. My husband is fit but it could be a problem as the grounds are hilly.
We like to take our friends to Coleton Fishacre as the house is worth seeing. If you visit on a Wednesday afternoon or Sunday afternoon, there is a resident pianist in the lounge. The house is art deco and well worth visiting.

We've been there several times with visiting friends and it's our favourite country house. It used to be owned by the D'Oyly Carte family in the 20s (?) and is full of beautiful furniture and ornaments of that period including art deco and the like. It's a house we'd love to buy and live in if (a) it came on the market and (b) we had many millions to spend (we haven't). It also has excellent gardens. A must see if in South Devon

If you like Art Deco, gardens and cream tea this place is perfection.

A crossing on the lower ferry from Dartmouth (£8 return) then a 15 minute drive to the property with plenty of parking makes for a stress free visit. Arrive at lunchtime and sample a cream tea in the modern tea rooms before taking the daily one hour garden tour at 2 o'clock. The tour, enthusiastically given by one of the full time gardeners, is interesting and you get your bearings to see the best of the lovely grounds.

Next visit the amazing Art Deco home of the D'oyly Carte family which is so authentic it really is like a trip back in time. All the decor, furniture and fittings are original with the room settings enhanced by period glass and ceramics.

Best rooms are the dining room with blue marble tables and Lalique light fittings and the lounge accessed by a semicircular staircase. If you are a pianist you are allowed to play the piano. One of the room guides played on the afternoon we visited. The library is also interesting, look out for the wind dial.

So, a really great National Trust day out. Perfect in fact. One to re-visit I think.

Amazing arts and crafts house and gardens, seriously a contender for the best National Trust property visited.
Allow lots of time to walk the gardens and go onto the coastal path(we were there 3 hours and could have stayed a lot longer)

Wonderful place. House, gardens, staff, cafe - all delightful. Everything is so well maintained. The deco style is just what we like. We could move in tomorrow.
