“A fantastic time on the River Dart”
Review of The Picnic Boat

The Picnic Boat
Reviewed 11 July 2013

We were lucky to have a sunny day for what turned out to be a fabulous lunchtime experience. Kevin took us out to get a great view of the castles that guard the entrance to Dartmouth before a gentle cruise down to Dittisham, accompanied by a glass of champagne. We then gently swung on a mooring in mid-river where we enjoyed a seafood feast that you would have to go a long way to beat. A lobster each, a huge crab, lots of prawns and other delights along with a bottle of Sharpham Estate wine (from vineyards that are only a stone's throw from where we were bobbing about). Absolutely brilliant!

Well what a wonderful evening. We had a double celebration, it was my sister in law's 70th and we had a childhood friend who had emigrated to Australia plus his Australian wife. Neither of them had ever visited Dartmouth before and having been royally entertained by them when we visited Sydney we were eager to make an equally good impression. Thanks first of all Kevin for organising the best day of weather this year we certainly didn't need the sides down. The food was wonderful and the service couldn't have been better, very efficient and very discreet. There was beer for the Aussies and Bubbles for the Brits and the mixture of fish, meats and cheeses(all local) couldn't have been better. We stopped for a comfort break at Ditsum (as the locals pronounce it), much appreciated by our cavapoo. It was her first voyage and she took to the water and her life jacket like an old sea dog and much appreciated her collapsible water bowl provided by Kevin. Note the Picnic Boat welcomes small well behaved dogs they can't cope with anything whose tail reaches the table! On the way back we had Kevin's special dessert, it was so nice that even I, not a pudding person, scraped the bowl clean! When we returned to Darthaven Marina it was nice to meet Rayne and their little spaniel who were waiting on the pontoon. This was our first trip on the Picnic Boat but it certainly wont be our last!

Quality is the word for this experience. Kevin is a great skipper and host on board this cracking river cruiser but for me the best part was the food, top restaurant standard! Soon after we set off up the Dart, the corks popped and chilled beers were poured. The views from the river gives you a different aspect on the properties, wildlife and other boats along the Dart. High end local seafood, continental meats and a fine cheeseboard were all laid out banquet style once we anchored. Gently bobbing about with lovely food and drink is a perfect way to spend a couple of hours or so with friends chilling out.

This was our second trip on the picnic boat but our first since the business was taken over by Kevin and his wife. We were really impressed the first time but Kevin has taken the experience to another level. The weather was not overly kind to us when we boarded for our evening cruise with friends, it was raining but with the sides down, the boat was extremely dry and cosy. Following our informative trip we moored mid river and were treated to an excellent picnic of delicious locally sourced treats from land and sea, whilst listening to the rain on the canvas which somehow added to the experience. We ate fresh meat and cheeses with fresh prawns, crab and lobster all accompanied by Kevin's wonderful home made bread. A real treat! keep up the good work Kevin!

Such good fun. We had a delicious cream tea and beautifully chilled white wine while sailing up the river in glorious sunshine. Couldn't have been better. Will definitely do it again next time we're in the area.
