“A hugely successful surprise 70th birthday party”
Review of The Picnic Boat

The Picnic Boat
Reviewed 28 August 2014

Thank you Kevin and Elizabeth for making the surprise 70th birthday party for my husband such a success - and for keeping the secret so successfully for over a year!

We did wonder if the picnic was actually going to happen, with the weather forecast for the day pretty dreadful as the aftermath of hurricane Bertha swept through. However, the weather in Dartmouth was sunny, though quite windy, and the trip was fantastic. I had arranged for all our family and closest friends to be present and there they all were, sitting on the boat, when we arrived - 12 of us in all.

I had ordered the seafood picnic for us all - the quantity and quality were superb, as was the presentation. Lobster, crab, crevettes, prawns, hot smoked salmon, all served with freshly baked break from Kevin and Rayne's deli - so much that several of us took away doggy bags at the end of the trip.

After the seafood we got off the boat at Dittisham for a short break, and returned to find dessert waiting for us. Everything was very professionally organised and presented.

It was a marvellous day, which I would thoroughly recommend; cannot wait for an excuse to do it again - maybe the breakfast cruise next time?

Dartmouth is by far and away the most appealing town in South Devon. Despite the associated namesake river ('Dart') being a very wet version of the M25 at rush hour, there's still plenty of character and charm. Alongside the various taxis and ferries, there are private boats and vessels for public hire. The river is an intrinsic part of the way of life in this area. Therefore, it would have felt remiss if we had failed to partake in its watery joys!

It just so happened that it was my wife's birthday on the 24th July and therefore having read the plethora of excellent reviews on Trip Advisor, decided to book the Picnic Boat for a birthday breakfast and slow saunter up the Dart.

We were not disappointed. Kevin, the skipper, who also owns a great Deli / Coffee Shop in the old market Square, met us at the boat (easily found on the main harbour front). We climbed on board and were met with a lovely spread. Home made granola, fresh croissants, bacon rolls, tea, coffee, natural yoghurt and to cap it all, a bottle of Cava and fresh orange for a couple of sly glasses of Bucks Fizz.

We then set off for a fine view of Dartmouth castle before heading back up the Dart towards Dittisham. Kevin is a very laid back and friendly guy, and imparted little snippets of local info on some of the areas we passed (the millionaire houses on the harbour front, the old WW2 ship cleaning stations etc.). When we arrived at Dittisham, the kids were given two sets of crabbing gear and we proceeded to catch what seemed like every crab in the river (36 in 20 minutes - not the record, though...). Emptied the crabs from our buckets onto the pontoon, causing a crab carumba as they hurtled back towards the river.

We then returned back down the river; Kevin giving the two wee kids the chance to steer the boat for a short time; leading to the great juxtaposition of panic on my face and sheer calm on Kevin's (I've seen my kids on the dodgems...). But a great little touch, which they'll remember for a long time.

All in all, about 90 - 100 minutes of casual river fun, with great food, great atmosphere, stunning views, mild parental panic and crabs. What more is there in life. Thanks Kevin. I recommend this to everyone; go feast on the river and wallow in a balmy reverence for Swallows and Amazons, and all things pastoral and watery!

I couldn't recommend this wonderful day on the river more; from the incredible 360 degree views of the River Dart, to the fabulous local produce we had for lunch, it was a truly magical day out.

Kevin is a fantastic host full of local knowledge, and his passion for Dartmouth and the area is evident. All the ingredients for our lunch was sourced locally and provided by Kevin and his wife Rayne who own the fabulous 'Dart to Mouth' Deli where we always stop off for lunch when in the area.

An unforgettable family day out on the river, the highlight of our annual family holiday! Thanks again Kevin and Rayne – we will be back again soon (as pirates)!

A lovely surprise for us two mums as it was my son in laws birthday but he and his wife decided to share this experience with us as they had enjoyed this trip so much before. We had a really lovely time. Glorious weather, superb food and a great skipper Kev who was very attentive. He pointed out points of interest along the route before we moored up for a very relaxing lunch, served with a smile. The food was simply delicious washed down with some bubbly (well you just have to). We then began our journey back to the Dart Marina and can truly say we had a wonderful time. Thank you to everyone, a trip to remember which I hope we can repeat.
