After many years declining health means I can no longer fly to Lake Garda in Italy. Dartmouth turns out to be a revelation about what England can offer. In a sublime setting near the mouth of the river Dart nestle the twin towns of Dartmouth and Kingswear. Separated by the river yet joined by frequent passenger and vehicle ferries both present a wonderful picture setting for a bustling harbour. I don't think I have been anywhere else where there is such concentrated marine activity. From one-man sculls to naval eights, and paddle steamers to cruise ships there is always something going on for everyones taste.

Truly a patch of heaven only spoilt by England's unpredictable weather.

The Dart is bustling with activity and to sit overlooking it all on one of the many benches situated on the harbour is pleasant, interesting and relaxing. We spent the warm summer evenings of our holiday in watching the car and foot ferries, the paddle steamer and the private boats going about their business. Families crabbing and the antics of the sea birds as they also kept a sharp eye on the small crabs being caught. Add to this a very nice clotted cream ice cream from the Station restaurant and you've got a great end to a busy day, at little expense.
During the day, you have the additional delight of hearing and seeing the steam trains as they pull in and out of Kingswear Station. Get yourself a Jubilee ticket and you won't be disappointed at it's value - great for hopping on and off the ferries, train and buses.

There are two car/foot ferries across the dart called higher (£4.70/car) and lower (£4.50/car). Since the journey time is less than 1 minute it seems expensive, but it saves the 26 mile detour around the river.

In addition there are frequent passenger only ferries which take longer to cross the Dart and these give much better opportunities and time for photos. Kingswear is very colourful but virtually impossible to park anywhere, whilst Dartmouth offers the normal shops and some better parking facilities.

Great place for boat watching, but watch out for the seagulls.

Great way to spend a few hours in good weather pottering around all the Dart River ferry options. Anything from 5 minutes to cross the river, to 3 hours for a return visit to Totnes; and many other options in between.
