A beautiful little hotel, that enjoys a relaxed atmosphere, friendly service and lovely food.
The rooms are all beautifully finished in a boutique style, very clean and warm (which is a blessing in Devon when it's -2 outside). We can't wait to return.

Staff - warm and welcoming. Decor - loved it, very trendy but cosy too. Room - lovely, all new and well decorated. Food and wine, excellent- had a selection of tapas and bread, something a bit different but very enjoyable. Breakfast - Delicious.

I always choose to stay at Browns when working in Dartmouth and I must say it is a great choice. Its great value, central and the staff are very hospitable. I will be returning in 2013 and would recommend to anyone.

Room Tip: They dont have a pool or fitness centre but I cant remove the ratings!!!

Thank you James and team for a wonderful 2 night stay in beautiful Dartmouth. Great fun atmosphere in the bar on Friday night with outstanding tapas early evening. Superb breakfast with locally sourced ingredients (the best bacon we've tasted in years). The lock on our room broke on Friday night, even that was no drama - within 1/2 hour the locksmith was there and had it sorted, every member of staff put themselves out - outstanding service and always with a smile. Browns isn't a five star hotel in the conventional sense but to us it is - can't wait to return !

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter.

Great ambiance and charming staff. Recommend early evening Fridays - excellent free authentic tapas in the bar. Excellent restaurant - steak or paella good. As the other reviews say the smaller rooms are small/basic even but clean, good bed and powerful shower. Central location can mean noise from the street and in particular pub opposite. Owner tells me he is planning to do away with smaller rooms in the new year. Overall a special place.

A massive thank you to James and his team at Browns Hotel, we arrived to find all arrangements exactly as booked and greeted by an unusual but well equipped room. The breakfast was one of the best English breakfast we sampled during our stay in the UK. The highlight came when we asked if it would be possible to source a local crab and serve it to us as a signature dish for a romantic evening meal, there being no such or similar seafood dish on the menu. This became an exciting process .... The young French chef visited us and discussed how he would suggest to prepare a crab and some fresh scallops as a starter. James estimated a price and off went the chef to the local market, securing the fresh local crab. The evening dinner was fantastic. James introduced us to a crab as a monster, and it was. The scallops and local ciders were icing on a cake to a wonderful stay. (unbelievably, total price for 2 incl. starters, scallops, main course, a monster crab, and enough cider was 50 pounds) Happy customers, A and C

Browns Hotel

I'd have to say that I've very mixed feeling about my stay at Browns Hotel in Dartmouth. Mainly my concerns were over the room we stayed in for two nights and would suggest if you are offered room 3 then don't accept. I can not comment on any other rooms as I am completely unaware of what they are like or how they are presented. Room 3 is extremely small for the price. The double bed is very small and the room around it is very tight. The shower room is very small c/w a wash hand basin and WC. However because of the limited space available using the facilities is very difficult to say the least. Within the main part of the room there is insufficient space to store baggage however there is a compact triangular built in wardrobe for hanging a limited number of suits and dresses. Luckily the bed is elevated which provides some additional storage if willing to lift the bed to gain access to the void below to store a moderate sized but flat suitcase.

However what made me give this hotel a positive score overall was the hospitality of the host and his staff. The rest of the facilities available such as the restaurant (see separate review) and bar where excellent as was the breakfast. The well stocked bar has some of the finest wines and Champagnes I've come across one my travels. Mr Brown has also selected a fine choice of bottled beers and liquors to match everyones tastes. Also available at the Bar are a selection of Tapas snacks / meals which can be purchased throughout the week but a sample of the selection are given to the customers early Friday evenings.

All in all a very good experience which upon our next visit will be made all the better by a better choice of room - hopefully.

Richard

Room Tip: Don't choose room 3

I hope that you will be pleased to know that we have completely a luxury refurbishment of our rooms during the first 2 months of 2013. Our rooms now match the high standards of our ground floor that you very kindly describe in your balanced review. We now have 6 good sized comfortable rooms (no small or standard rooms) and two large rooms including a 39m suite, possibly the largest and most stylish hotel room in Dartmouth!
