“Good, friendly hotel in idylicc setting”
Reviewed 9 July 2012

We have just returned from a long weekend staying at the Stoke Lodge Hotel, Soke Fleming, Dartmouth. Our visit was for a family wedding so we were looking for a comfortable hotel with a good location and all the usual facilities. We arrived Thursday afternoon and left on Sunday. Our room was clean, comfortable (especially the bed) and with a beautiful view. The staffwere all without exception very friendly and helpfull. We ate in the main restaurant on Thursday evening and had a lovely meal, our steaks were excellent and the sorbets and ice creams we had for desert the same. Breakfast was also very good. We had a family set-meal on Friday for around 16 people which again was excellent. The facilities for a hotel of this size were exceptional, the indoor pool, jacuzi and sauna were great. we did not have time to try all the other facilities due to our short break but just the variety speaks for itself. Overall we would highly recommend the hotel if you are visiting the area.

Room Tip: Get a sea view, it really is beautiful.

This is a sweet hotel, with a view of the sea and nice rooms.

The bedroom and bathroom were modern and clean. The beds were a bit soft, but this was overall a nice experience. I also enjoyed the breakfast (vegetarian cooked!), which was made to order.

Don't forget to bring your swimming trunks, as there are cute little indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

We stayed at Stoke Lodge for 3 nights during the half-term break, having decided to leave our originally booked accomodation at Bickleigh after 1 night as it was way worse than what we could bear. The travelling party consisted of 2 adults and 2 young children.

This was our second stay at Stoke Lodge (see Aug 2011 review of the first stay). It again lived up to our expectations and the high standard was maintained. The rate we got was cca 130 per night for the room, which is excellent value. The guest mix in the hotel was quite varied and ranged from families with young children to retired couples.

A couple of points this time around::
- Room: We stayed in number 9. Clean, spacious, furniture in a good shape, the large bed/matress seemed to be recently upgraded (perfect for all 3 nights, not too soft as last time), small tv (did not use), tea and coffee making facilities, biscuits, hairdryer, modern bathroom
- Service: Great throughout, one feels very welcome in this place, nothing is an issue and guest well-being was on top of the list of everyone we came across from the owners down to the restaurant staff
- Food: always at a dedicated table, breakfast great as last time, had one dinner in the hotel restaurant - nice as last time. The pate should come with more bread (fixed promptly). Evening bar service is prompt and there is now the "surge" Guinness, which tasted great
- Facilities/amenities: Free wifi is a nice treat, though works only on the ground floor areas and some rooms (not ours), gets slower when many people are connected. Think about an upgrade for a stronger hub, wifi should be in every room. We used the playroom next to the dining area a few times - played the pool and table tennis. The equipment is somewhat worn, which however makes it perfect to use with young kids (and we used it a lot). Again did not manage to spend time in the gardens and the swimming pool...

In summary: moving to Stoke Lodge saved our holiday, despite longer drive to some of the places we had on our schedule (north Dartmoor). We will be back for sure.

Great hotel, great location, friendly & helpful staff, good food & lovely room with a view. What more can you ask ?? We spent a week end in this lovely hotel and would recommend it to anyone. Only a 10 min bus ride from Dartmouth but not at Dartmouth prices. My recommendation is, if you want a great weekend away in this lovely part of the country then look no further than Stoke Lodge.

As a family we have been here many many times, recommened it to lots of people and I think my mother organised a walking trip for 35 people here. Never had any complaints and will continue to return. The decor is still the same as the first time I went 16 years ago and could do with updating in some areas. That said its a really really nice place. The food has always been of extremely high standard and last night was no exception. Service is good. Room was very nice, clean and very comfortable. Has a lovely pools and games room etc.

We stayed for one free night courtesy of RSA and we were happy with everything. The leisure complex could do with a bit of updating but overall the staff were friendly and it was clean and warm. The bed was VERY comfortable but I would have liked some softer pillows. We would go again.
