“Heading downhill”

My husband, my sister in law and I were looking forward to eating at Carluccios today. We have always had good service and good food. Definitely not so today. Having booked a table we were shown to the smallest table imaginable, definitely not room for three. My husband and I had an antipasta starter which would not fit onto the table with our plates. My husband and sister in law gave up their plates and ate straight from the platter, just so we could get the food on the table. To say the service was slow is an understatement. We arrived before 1 and it was just before 2 before our maIn course arrived. At this time the restaurant was certainly not full so there was no excuse. The waiter did come and apologise and ask us if we would like another drink. One would have thought this would have been a gift in the circumstances, but no, it was on the bill and it was only a water and a lemonade. My husband's main course was not as advertised. It was meant to be one of their specials, lamb with courgette, kale and chilli. There certainly was no kale or chilli. It was just a lamb steak on the plate with a few fried courgettes. Not very special! We did have two coffees and one sweet. We saw the coffee had been made but it was left on the side for some considerable time before it was bought to the table. By the time we had finished it was 2.45! It was a good job we are all retired and did not have to get back to work.

We have been regular customers since this restaurant opened and it certainly is not as good a service, or food as it has been in the past. A lot of their regular staff who have always been so friendly and efficient appear to have left. Whatever has happened it needs to be sorted out now. Not impressed. My husband is very generous when it comes to tipping but there was no tip today. We will be giving it a wide berth in future. Sorry, but you used to be good.

“Very good food, well presented”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 March 2014

We had 4 sharing dishes as we were unable to chose what to eat.
The lasagna and seafood spaghetti were exceptional.
Very good wine and reasonably priced.
The waiter was excellent (tall guy with black curly hair wearing a little hat).
The price for the meal was good value too.

“very disappointing”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 March 2014 via mobile

we went for lunch with friends and we had a very disappointing experience. we had pasta with vongole and was very over cooked , very far away fron what a pasta dish should be like, it didn ' t taste of anything. pudding was not great too. the only good thing was the prosecco. definately i won' t go back! if you want to try a good italian stay away from this place!

“Pleasantly surprised”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2014

This Exeter restaurant, and this chain generally, seems to get somewhat mixed reviews. When faced with a rather poor range of choices in that part of Exeter rather late one night and needing a decent, but fairly quick meal, we settled on Carluccio's. We ended up getting exactly what we wanted but a whole lot more, too. The service was very friendly and attentive, the food was delicious and very well prepared, and the whole experience really was very good.

Tip: try one of the steaks, which are prepared to perfection - especially if you like medium-rare.

“Perfect lunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 March 2014 via mobile

First time at the restaurant inExeter having previously been to the one in Bristol.
It was lovely here. The service was brilliant and the food great. It was a lovely relaxing Sunday lunch. The atmosphere was relaxed and although it was busy you was still made to feel as though we were the only ones eating.
Can't remember a better lunch for a long time and can't wait to go back again soon.
