“Stay at the Thistle On Thursday 23rd Jan 2014”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 January 2014

Stayed for 2 nights in January and received a warm welcome from the reception staff. Staff on check in were friendly and went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. However, I forgot the ladies name on reception ut very welcoming staff a credit to the hotel. Sign in process was quick and simple. Had a standard double which had everything we needed in the room and it was clean to a very high standard. On our first morning for breakfast we received a very warm welcome from a member of the restaurant staff Danielle. Once we were greeted we were shown to seats and asked if we would like tea or coffee. The tea and coffee arrive in china teapots which was a nice gesture and not often seen in many hotels. As it was quiet in the restaurant Danielle took an interest in our stay, and asked where we had traveled from. Her positive attitude helped to make us feel at ease and almost felt like we were at a home from home. Breakfast has a good variety of hot English buffet and selection of cold Continental. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to be close to the city center. Within a 2 minute walk you are in the city center and can be at the cathedral in 5 minutes. Me and my husband really enjoyed our time here and will definitely stay here again.

Dear Emma S

We are really pleased to see that you have enjoyed your stay at the Hotel.

It is great to see that you had a great breakfast experience and that Reception and Danielle provided great service. As a team, we are concentrating on interacting with the guests so that there is that "home away from home" feeling.

We hope that we will be able to welcome you back soon.

When we arrived, we were told we'd been upgraded to a deluxe double :) the room was spacious, clean and comfortable. TV signal was not great. Room was very warm but can understand in winter. Breakfast had so much choice and was very good. Central location and very nice looking hotel. For the price of £79 for one night b&b, I think it was well worth the money.
Parking can be a bit tricky but not anything to do with hotel. Very happy with stay

I stayed here with a friend as we went away for their birthday to visit from Cornwall - not too far but we had to travel up by train. And a friendly word of advice to anyone who may be in the same position as us, when getting off at Exeter St Davis it will probably be worth getting a cab - especially if you have a lot of baggage with you because it is a further walk than you might think. Upon arrival, the staff were very quick in booking us in even though there was quite a large party who seemed to be in the foyer - which is fantastic, as sometimes it is difficult to get the balance right between attending to the 'big spenders' and regular guests. The room was nice and clean, had an easy to work TV (which some places just don't have). Another bonus was the bed, it was comfy and I had a fantastic night's sleep.

The hotel itself is nice and central - it takes about 5 minutes to get to all of the main shops such as Zara and Miss Selfridge, but there are plenty of great restaurants on that walkway so you won't need to rely on any cabs when you stay at this hotel.

I think my only criticism would be that (possibly due to the party we had seen on our arrival) there was a booming sound of music right into the early hours of the morning. It wasn't loud enough to be able to hear the music, but it was enough to notice. I don't personally mind and neither did my friend, but I think possibly other guests would have liked to be informed in advance and offered complimentary earphones? But like I said, my stay was great and I had a good time - just something to consider to ensure other happy customers :)

Dear CVSanders

Thanks for taking time to provide feedback - it is great to see that you enjoyed your stay and indeed the Hotel's great location.

With regards to the music, we do normally place guests who are attending the events in the rooms directly above the function room so that other guests are not disturbed listening to the music. We do have ear-plugs available for guests who need them too.

I look forward to welcoming you back to the Hotel.

Kind regards

Stayed 1 night in November. The hotel has a nice old world charm about it. It is in a great location right across the road from the railway station and very close to shopping and restaurants. It also has car parking which is a bonus, however it is quite expensive to park there.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Our room very clean and comfortable. My only complaint was the prices at the bar, they were very expensive. My husband also remarked to the bar tender that the beer on tap is not as cold as he would like, so it was suggested to him that they could put some bottles on beer on ice for him. He agreed and they put 4 on ice, but he only drank 1 but we were charged for the 4. Based on accommodation I would definitely recommend this hotel, just don't drink at the bar, there are plenty of great restaurants and pubs very close by.

Thanks for taking time to provide feedback on your stay at the Hotel. We are really pleased that you enjoyed your stay at the Hotel and indeed the service of the team.

I'm really sorry about the misunderstanding with regards to the drinks. I am not too sure why this would have happened and please be assured that this is not a normal occurrance. We will discuss at the next bar team meeting to ensure this is not repeated.

On arrival reception staff very friendly.Car park VERY small and they charge you £8 per day to park! Disgusting considering the price you pay for bed and breakfast. We were staying because we were attending a course there. the candidates who were NOT staying there however could park all day for nothing?? Can you please tell me the logic in that? The car park was empty at night and we had to pay, during the day when it was busy you could park for nothing? The room was VERY small the bed was up against the wall so one person had to try and slide in from the end of the bed so if you have mobility problems no chance! Breakfast there was a good choice of hot and cold or should that be "luke warm" and cold there is no way you could say the hot food was hot even luke warm is being generous. Staff in the restaurant however very friendly. The guy who runs the bar Richard excellent member of staff nothing too much trouble and he was always helpful and attentive. He was a credit to the hotel and it appeared not to be always appreicated by another member of staff that was the vibe that came across. The room was very warm in January so i hate to think what it would be like in summer there was a fan in the room but to be honest it didnt do much.Far too expensive as they have no facilities

Dear Chris69kiddermister

Thanks for your honest feedback and I am sorry that you are disappointed.

Being in the centre of the Hotel we are lucky to be situated in a great location, however as the Hotel was built in 1875 we do not have large grounds for carparking. As carparking is limited, we charge a set fee of £8 per hour for overnight guests. We do provide complimentary carparking to day conference guests as they normally park during the day when there is less demand on these spaces. We do fully advertise on all booking websites that there is a fee and I have double checked with other central Hotels and we offer one of the cheapest carparks of our competitors .

With regards to the room size, you have booked through an online travel agent one of our small double rooms - these are advertised as small rooms and the description mentions that they have 4 foot beds in. For a small supplement we have standard rooms which are available for those guests who would prefer a normal sized room.

I am pleased that you enjoyed the selection of breakfast. I am sorry that you felt that the hot food was not warm enough and will liase with the Head Chef to check the temperature logs we have in place to ensure that the food is of the required temperature.

Thank you once again for your feedback.

Yours Sincerely

Craig Findleton

It was a last minute decision to try the Thistle's New Years Eve Package. We thoroughly enjoyed the canapés and champagne, 4 course meal and petit fours. My only gripe was that I'm not a lover of chocolate deserts and would have liked a choice. The disco performed throughout the meal and seemed to have play the right music for the mainly older diners, We saw the New Year in with more bubbly and the requisite 'Auld Lang Syne'. Our bedroom was excellent and we slept well despite the terrible weather outside. 'Brunch' was a later event than the usual hotel Breakfast and check out was extended until 2pm. Overall we had a really excellent and enjoyable New Year

The reception staff were the friendliest I've experienced the world over, a lovely girl with South African accent. The Arab accented guy in the bar was really nice too. They really knew the balance between new year friendliness and professionalism.
Thank goodness for the fan, the room was too hot without and helped drown out the extractor fan noise.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room!
