“Nice Hotel”
Reviewed 23 February 2013

We stayed at this hotel for two nights. The front desk welcomed us and she was very informative. The room was very nice and lovely and warm.
The first morning the breakfast staff were very nice and helpful, the second morning the were a bit miserable looking. But on the whole they were very good. The hotel is situated very close to the town centre.
Our stay was very nice and i would stay at this hotel again.

We have just returned from a two nights stay. On arriving in our privilege room we discovered a plumbing issue in the bathroom but, after a quick call to reception, we were moved to an adjacent room within 5 minutes. The room was on the third (top) floor and was clean and just right for us temperature-wise. We could open the windows and look out over the surrounding trees and Georgian buildings. There was very little traffic noise. We used the pool, jacuzzi and sauna and found them very pleasant, although the showers and changing room floor could have done with a good scrub. The gym looked popular and well equipped although we didn't use it.

We didn't eat in the Mercure, wanting something a little more original. Instead, we went out for cocktails at the lovely Southernhay Hotel, less than 5 minutes stroll away, and liked the place so much that we booked a table for dinner there the following night. I heartily recommend that - it was a genuine experience, with exceptional staff and lovely food.

Breakfast at the Mercure was good, lots of variety and a nice environment. We have stayed in other hotels in this chain and found this to be as expected. Staff were friendly and helpful but why don't they have a self-service coffee/tea/hot chocolate area like the rest of Europe? Last entrance is 9am, which was a bit early for us. Next time we will probably head out for breakfast. There are plenty of places that serve it nearby. We liked the look of Bills breakfast menu, just the other side of the high street.

Room Tip: Top floor gives you better views

Stayed here several times in the last few years, and have found it to be consistently high in standards of comfort, service and facilities on offer.

It's situated in a great central location which is easy to access from the motorway, and handy for walking to all the sights and amenities of the city, which I guess justifies the £10 per day parking fee, but I find it sad that a hotel whose prices are already towards the high end has had to introduce this extra charge.

Reception area with its welcoming open fire and general lounge and bar area are nicely arranged and presented which give a very pleasing first impression. Prices, as to be expected in this type of hotel are bordering on expensive but not extortionate and I would say generally value for money. Bar and restaurant food is good quality and the fact that both always appear busy and with a good vibe, speaks for its popularity with non-residents too. Breakfast is exceptionally good and plentiful in both choice and amount.

The good location means, however, that you are within easy striking distance of many good eateries if you don't want to stay in for meals.

Room service is also excellent, as is the response to any special requests from housekeeping, which have always been dealt with promptly and courteously. I've stayed here solo and with the family (interconnecting rooms available), the children always think it's wonderful, and every occasion has been enjoyable.

This is our preferred hotel in Exeter to use as a base when visiting elderly parents as it ticks all the boxes. It is centrally located - just a few minutes walk from the city centre, has its own car park and indoor swimming pool which we make good use of morning and evening. The staff are very welcoming and helpful.

We have stayed in a couple of other hotels nearby when the Mercure has been full. Whilst the accommodation may be comparable, the facilities are not.

We stayed here for one night. The hotel was clean and felt quite comfortable for our purposes. The check in process was not so great. We arrived a little earlier than check in time but seemed to get ignored after we were told the room was not ready. I'm sure there were rooms ready but alas we waited patiently. Finally we got into our rooms - they were very clean, simple, pleasant and comfortable. The bathroom was also quite modern. Breakfast the next morning was okay - good by country English hotel standards I suppose, though nothing special - breakfasts are not something we excel at.

We will be staying here again as for the area it really is the only quality hotel that we found.

firstly the positives:
Very central, easy to find.
Check-in was easy and quick with a lovely reception area and nice bar,
good selection in the bar menu.
parking is right outside.
bed was comfortable.
swimming pool etc available.
helpful spa/gym staff

negatives:
although the reception is nice and very modern in decor it then suddenly turns to old fashioned wooden lay out all the way to the bedrooms which look like they havent had a touch of paint in years and the furniture my grandmother would have. this is fine but felt it was misleading how modern and well decorated the downstairs was.
the bar is very expensive, not the most pricey but still quite expensive.
parking is also available to the public therefore at times can imagine its limited, and it also charged, i believe it was £10 per night.
the kettle in the room was dirty and so was the cups and tray they were on so we were unable to use these.
the pool is all one depth which for some is a positive I guess. but the Jacuzzi only fits three or four at a push as it is very small. the spa area is also very out dated making it feel a little bit dirty.

overall an average stay, location is the main positive of this hotel, there are many other hotels around the area though.

Having read the previous reviews we were a little worried about coming here. We are a family of 2 adults and one baby but on arrival we found the hall of the hotel very nice and clean. We were given room 167, which is perfect for a couple but tight with a baby. This wasn't the hotel fault because we knew what we booked. Overall the room was nice, clean and bathroom good size. All public area are clean and the staff has been very polite and helpful on information regarding the area. The breakfast had enough choice but I would suggest to get it included in the room price as i dont think is worth the £15.50 thry they ask u to pay if not pre booked. opposite to other reviews we found the staff very nice with us.
