The large reception area makes a good first impression. Our room at the back of the hotel was slightly tired with peeling paint on the windows, but was otherwise clean, and furniture and fittings were in good condition. It was also quiet, and the windows were opening ones which made a pleasant change.
We failed to get better than lukewarm water from the shower, which was disappointing.
Breakfast offered a vast choice of good old "full English" standbys, Continental-style hams and cheeses, patisserie and cereals. The bacon was a little bit greasy and flaccid and the scrambled eggs looked so much like styrofoam they were best avoided, but otherwise it represented good value.
Staff were uniformly welcoming and friendly, from the front desk to the cleaning staff.
If you don't have the time or the inclination (or the budget) to seek out an independent or a B&B, or you're only here for one or two nights, this is a decent hotel in a good location and you could do far worse.More
